Description: Established as Zoukinis in 2008 as a vegetarian restaurant, this gem has recently undergone a major facelift and is now called amala. (2016) Amala is now a purely vegan restaurant offering a conscious eating experience with what some would call 'vegan gourmet cuisine' with delicate and robust flavour and texture combinations - all purely plant-based. Whatever it may be, we are committed to offering real food, prepared simply and with love, using organic and local ingredients where possible and practical. Many of our 5 star review mention the friendliness of the staff, the soothing and calming atmosphere (even when we're busy which is more and more!) of the environment and of course - many takes pictures and comment on the delicious food! Most important to us is how YOU FEEL at the end of the MEAL (or experience as we like to call it). That is our focus and our strive. Daniel & the team at amala

“Massively Disappointing!”
Reviewed November 22, 2013

We booked a table at Zoukinis based on its websites claims, the owners unshakeable confidence in her restaurant and the multitude of positive reviews on this very site. We went with great expectations and not a doubt in our minds that we were in for something special. We were completely and utterly wrong!!! The greeting we received was lack lustre and the below par service continued throughout the evening. The menu was exceptionally limited and we noticed that the Christmas menu was the same dish for dish as the standard restaurant menu, including deserts! The 'special' soup was the same Thai squash offering that we were told about a week earlier when passing and the same soup that features in a number of reviews on here dating back over the months!...and the table next to us had given up on the idea of a meal altogether and stuck to bread. Worrying signs! We persisted. Our food arrived and was the complete opposite of what is claimed. It was unimaginative and bland...Bland despite in the most part, being firmly rooted in Asia! Cuisine which is naturally flavoursome and lends itself with out need for imagination to the vegetarian diet! The indian pancakes although tasty, were garnished with shop bought Mediterranean balsamic syrup, odd. The Thai salad was almost completely tasteless, lacking any kind of expected punch. An achievement in itself. The quinoa pie was tasty but, served with very plain Sunday veg...peas, carrots and parsnips. Zzzz. The laksa curry was a disaster! It consisted of a supermarket stir fry veg pack swimming in a watery bland soup which I was expected to eat with a fork! Did we want desert? No thank you. Now this may all sound a little harsh but, Zoukinis is its own worst enemy. The restaurant appears delightful in its decor. The owner talks about her food as if Marco Pierre White himself lurks in the kitchen. The website promises food worthy of a michelin star. The reviews suggest that vegetarians have finally been saved from the hideous afterthoughts on restaurant menus across the land. None of it is true. Zoukinis is a dressed up cafe with delusions of grandure. The food is standard home cooked vegetarian fayre and the service is straight out of a greasy spoon. The worst thing about it all is that the potential is there!!! The restaurant is indeed beautiful, the owner does have her heart in the right place, the staff are naturally friendly. Perhaps they just need to fire the chef! Marco, he is not. Please Zoukinis, step up. We know you want to and we're sure you can. There's a way to go though...

“Perfect for vegans, and everyone else too”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

Always made to feel very welcome, Zoukinis clearly is a place that is run by people with a passion to provide fantastic vegetarian and vegan food in a welcoming environment.
Menu choice is excellent..we had a (vegan friendly) roast - the roast vegetables were perfect and the nut roast full of flavour and texture.
