“Good food, nice atmos, but little standing space...”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

Good food, good atmosphere with not overly modernised interior (ie. warm wood and lighting rather than cold hard surfaces) and background music that doesn't come right at you as if you've headphones on! And no tv screens as we noticed - a rare thing these days, even in a wine bar: nice.

“Rumour has it”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

Ate in this lively bar/ bistro on Friday 8th feb.. It was busy.. Which I always think is a good sign whenever food is involved. Not the place you would go for a quiet romantic meal.. Although It ended up bing just me n other half, we were supposed to go as a foursome, it was a great night.

Atmosphere was great... Loud enough to laugh and not have hushed whispers over dinners as we have had to in other places lacking atmosphere, but not too loud that we couldn't have a conversation.

We were in a strange alcove/giant inglenook at the bank of the restaurant which ended up being one of the best seats in the restaurant although when we got o the table the snob in me was a bit miffed we were being shoved in a weird corner.

The building is typical of small towns and townhouses in Devon.. And as such it was a bit chilly. But nothing a cardi didn't sort.

Great wine list.. Not too extortionate and house red was £15 and very good.

Food: mostly English although there was a bit of Thai running through it: the boy had pork spring rolls with a blackened sesame seed salad... AMAZING.. The pork was Sooo tender and melt in the mouth and the sweet chilli was just the right amount of sweet and spicy...the salad was yummy.. Drizzled with sesame oil...mmmm. I had mussels which were pretty good, although the ciabatta was very doughy and heavy and burn on one side. However not the end of the world as the mussels were tender and the broth was the right side of creamy.

The sirloin was tender and salad was nice. It came with frenchfries which were ok. The peppercorn sauce was relly old although as I'm greedy there wasn't enough of it as it was only a small mini ramekin full. The duck lug was good although he wasn't the biggest fan of the potato Anna.

All in all a nice lively place to go for some very good food and some very nice drink...although the cherry beer (apparently) gave the boy a terrible hangover....

Average starter cost £7, meals from £15 to £20 I think. Wine from £15 to £35. Average prices or good food, great atmosphere and friendly, relaxed and unpretentious service.

“Best Pizza in Totnes, lovely atmosphere and lovely staff!”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

We popped in to Rumour for a pizza a couple of weeks ago. It was utterly delicious and along with some chunky fries and salad there was loads for the two of us. The staff were really friendly and accommodating and the service was quick. I look forward to going there again soon and trying some of the other dishes Rumour has to offer.
There's a lovely, friendly and warm atmosphere in Rumour that just can't be beaten.

“Great atmosphere but disappointing attention to detail”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

We live a few minutes walk from Rumour so have visited many times over the past year. We're largely drawn by the atmosphere as the food, whilst decent, isn't exceptional. It's also fairly pricey and veggie options tend to be rather dull. Our last visit however was a big dispapointment. We had booked weeks in advance for a 40th birthday for a visiting friend. This was her only celebration and we wanted it to be just right. Despite popping in to double check the booking and agreeing with a member of staff that they would surprise our friend with a birthday cake and some table decorations that we provided (nothing too labour intensive for the staff - just a couple of balloons and some sparkly bits) when we arrived 5 minutes before our reserved time, the table was occupied by people finishing off their pizzas and there were no decorations in sight. Eventually, after much discrete prompting, a member of staff appeared 20 minutes later with the balloons, but by that point it was all just a bit embarrassing and not at all the special surpise we'd envisaged. No apology either. OK, not the end of the world but it was awkward and badly handled. This will always be a popular restaurant beacuse there's actually not a great deal of choice for buzzy places in Totnes, but if you're expecting staff to go above and beyond to make a special night special, perhaps try elsewhere (La Fourchette down the road is great for this).
