“Good value, wish I could have spent more time here”
Reviewed October 18, 2013

I only had 45 minutes to spend here, but wish I could have looked around for longer. Lots to see. Beautiful building, nicely furnished with period items. Good audio tour. Loved the top floor with the exhibition about Charles Babbage's life - especially all the stuff on modern day computers! Only £2.50 entrance fee too.

“Save this Museum”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

A very interesting little museum that is in danger of closing due to withdrawal of funding from the local council - how short-sighted of them. A great collection of local long cased clocks and an excellent informative room on Charles Babbage - who without his brilliant brain we might not have the computer chip! The Tudor Merchants house, the museum is housed in, is also worth exploring and it houses the Towns archives with historical documentation including wills, deeds, maps, and the entire local newspaper since 1860. A gem of a place

“A small jewel of a museum !”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

We visited this cute museum while on holiday in Devon and are so glad we discovered it.

Set in one of the town's remaining Elizabethan houses it's a fascinating exhibition of Tudor life and the social history of Totnes and it's celebrated former residents all explained in detail through easy to follow FREE audio guide. Each of the 13 rooms reflects a different aspect of Totnes history - from the faithfully recreated Elizabethan kitchen to the brilliantly informative Charles Babbage room (this man really was England's Leonardo Da Vinci) - this small and mighty town musuem is not to be missed.

“Fascinating museum”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

My sister and I spent a long time looking around this museum, full of domestic touches, like the kitchen, living room etc which brings the past into clearer focus. The Babbage room was interesting too. Lots of period touches retained, oak beams, original staircases etc. Lovely place, very interesting. It used to be a merchant's house, apparently. Takes you back into history and how better-off people lived their lives.
