Owner description: Under New Management since November 2013! A quintessential 17th Century Inn, located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, at the bottom of a steep valley next to Bow Creek and bridge. The Inn has been used as a smithy, a brew house, petrol station, a prison and a haunt for the feared press gangs. The area was recorded in the doomsday book. Built in the 17th-century, Waterman's Arms overlooks tinkling Bow Creek, near Tuckenhay. We have fifteen beautiful, well appointed en-suite rooms with large bathrooms and powerful showers in the Annexe and spacious powerful shower rooms in the Inn. Direct dial telephones and free Wi-Fi equipped throughout. With riverside sitting across from the Inn, The Waterman's is the ideal place for a relaxing drink or a delicious meal by the river. We also have newly refurbished sitting to the side of the Inn on the patio. We have two separate dining rooms, on three different levels, seating no more than 35 people in each, they have been recently updated and are now bright, airy and as modern as a 17th century inn can be!

“Really dissapointing”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

We are local to the Waterman's Arms but this was our first visit, sadly also our last. The barman who served us was really friendly but a bit clueless. Having ordered our food, the starters arrived and to be fair mine was OK but my wife's was not, she order prawns that arrived deep fried in breadcrumbs and didn't taste of anything, they looked like very cheap Iceland food. The main course was just appaling, the pasta had clearly been reheated in a microwave and was rock solid around the edges. Having complained, the barnman came back from the kitchen with the suggestion that the pasta was not overcooked in the middle! Eventually, a replacement was provided which was also over seasoned and reheated. The gravy on the Liver and Bacon was thick enough to repair potholes and really overseasoned with tough meat.
No apology, and in fact the barman became really defensive. We left without risking a desert.
In short, don't waste your hard earned cash here, there are many great pubs in the area.. this is not one of them.

“I wish it was my local”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

We went to this pub three times while on holiday in a nearby cottage. We went for Sunday lunch which was excellent and the cheese board was outstanding. The landlord told us he bought the cheese from a shop in Totnes which we then visited and, er, spent rather a lot of money on cheese!

“Great Setting let down a bit by OK food”
Reviewed August 13, 2012

Loved sitting by the soft flowing shallow river waters and then paddling in them !! Disappointed by the "out of the Brakes menu" fried up food. Asked for prawns and squid mixed salad expecting local sea food and got deep fried stuff, albeit on a huge fresh salad base...
