“Expected better”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2013

For a restaurant not a million miles from the sea, the mussels were tasteless and small portion. The wait for the main course to arrived seemed endless and my pork was tasteless when it did arrive. Service hit and miss - so very disappointed with our experience. Was expecting much better following the recommendation by Jonathan Dimbleby in the Telegraph.

“Good decision”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2013

Me and my partner haven't visited Totnes in quite a few years now, and by recommendation of a friend we decided to give La Fourchette a go. It was fairly busy when we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely young waitress and took a seat near to the window. I ordered the chicken which was superb, quite possibly the best chicken i have ever tasted. My partner ordered a steak which was equally as good and right up his alley. It's just a pity that we had no room for desserts because the menu looked so intriguing. The portion size's were spot on and everything was delivered efficiently. Food, service, atmosphere, value - everything was right on target. Recommended!

“Came up trumps”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2013 via mobile

Having walked out of the pub we had booked for a quiet meal out, and theme spending twenty minutes calling the various eateries between that place, Holne and Totnes, we finally found a table free at La Fourchette. Since my last visit, this bistro has had a gentle makeover. From the starters to the pudding and coffee everything was delicious, served discreetly but attentively and a tribute to this bistro's excellent pedigree. They more than saved the evening which could have been a disaster. It didn't matter that they had run out of fish stock as the onion soup i had instead of the fish soup was delicious!

“Terrible food, terrible service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

The menu looked reasonable, the exterior very pleasant so - knowing Totnes, and its many wonderful eateries well - we decided to give it a go. What a dreadful mistake!

First, as others have observed, there is absolutely no atmosphere. It felt more like sitting in a slightly run down waiting room, than a supposedly authentic brasserie.

The table was sticky and wobbly, the waitress reluctant, to say the least.

Our drinks came promptly enough, and my coffee was fairly nice. Nothing to write home about which, when you know the level of pride Totnes rightly has in its independent coffee houses, is a notable fact. But perfectly nice.

40 minutes of watching a thoroughly unhurried chef idle his way through the orders, we eventually got our food.

Of the three dishes ordered, the worst was probably the crepe my mother ordered, which rather seemed to have come out of a packet. The accompanying salad - served on a warm plate! - certainly had. Absolutely no sense of presentation or care, and by all accounts utterly bland.

I ordered duck, which was pleasant enough, if so scant I was out of meat in literally three small mouthfuls. Meanwhile, the "jus" was more like a particularly strong mix of Bisto gravy. Absolutely revolting.

The third... was so unmemorable, my husband can't actually recall what he ordered. Certainly he didn't finish it, and was very hungry by the time it arrived!

There are so many superb places to eat in Totnes. This most definitely isn't one of them.
