Description: The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of. Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff. Diners can enjoy a delicious à la carte menu and set menus featuring local and sustainable fish, meat and vegetables, sourced from the surrounding area, in an informal and attractive setting. For an extra special culinary treat opt for the tasting menu. Expect friendly and knowledegable service without the formalities. All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.

“Not up to standard, this time!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2008

Our evening started brilliantly with Artichoke / Garlic soup and a great white wine. After this, things appeared to slip. I returned my steak twice as it was raw! There was however, no hesitation with changing the dish, although sadly the staff seemed uninterested and did not want to engage in conversation on this particular evening. We were looking forward to eating here and appreciate we didn’t dine in The Room, but felt the standard of service / quality should be of the same level regardless.

“Love The Elephant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2008

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon the The Elephant on the way back to our hotel. We were pleasantly surprised with the very modern, contemporary decor.

We were even more impressed with the service and food, there was a really good set menu for 20.00, so any budget could go there.

I really would have liked to have eaten in the fine dinning section but that is only open on a saturday and was fully booked.

The portions were not huge but enough and the quality was excellent. The menu was varied and the champagne delicious! I am very spoilt!!

My only criticism would be only one slice of brioche with the pate was a bit mean! (but they did give extra bread instead).

Go there, you will not be disappointed!

“Pretentious”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2008

We have visited the Elephant (the Brasserie rather than "The Room") a number of times. Whilst we have had some good (but never excellent) meals, in general we have found the food to be overpriced for what it is and service can be variable.

Last time we visited we ate from the fixed price Brasserie menu. The main course in particular was very disappointing. It was called the "Elephant Classic". In reality it was a tasteless chicken stew largely comprising bones.

In our opinion, for the same price the food is far better in either the Orange Tree or VIP.
