Thank you for your review. It's really great to know that you enjoyed your stay and especially our breakfast. It seems to be a hit with most of our guests. Hopefully we will see you both again soon.
Just returned from an enjoyable 3 night break. The breakfast are superb and very filling. Host, Gary and Debbie made us very welcome. Love the grand old house, its high ceilings and ornate coving.
Will return again soon

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words. We are both delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us. We really enjoy what we do and look forward to looking after you again in the not too distant future.
My 6-year-old daughter and I were very well looked after for our 1-night stay. As visiting football fans, we were in good hands as we got to share a cab with Gary, who's a regular at Plainmoor, and have a bit of banter about the game. The room was a small double, but well-appointed with tea, coffee, bottled water, toiletries, a decent en-suite and a TV/DVD as well as an excellent wi-fi connection. The bar is small but decently-stocked, and you can help yourself (there's an honesty tab). Breakfast was excellent, with obvious pride taken in the quality of the ingredients. The location is good - you are a short stroll down the hill to the marina and town centre, but just far enough away for it to be peaceful. The hotel itself is a lovely old Victorian villa, with bright interiors and high ceilings. The hosts were perfect - apart from being amenable and friendly, Gary and Debbie have that rare ability to make each guest feel they are the only ones who matter! They apparently get a lot of repeat stayers and it is easy to see why.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. We really enjoyed looking after you. We would also like to thank you for your comments regarding breakfast. We take great pride in selecting only the best for our guests and we are very proud of our breakfast award. We do hope that we are able to look after you both again on another occasion.
Stayed at The Shirley 6 nights from 18 Sept 2013. Hosts, Gary and Debbie, and their staff made us feel very welcome. Gary was helpful with advice regarding restaurants and local area. Our Superior Plus room (No.4) was beautifully furnished, had nice outlook with an opening window. En Suite bathroom was nice size and well planned. Excellant luxury towels, toiletries and bed linen. Breakfast was superb with great selection ie Full English Breakfast, selection of alternatives plus fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals, fruit juice, pot of coffee or tea. B&B was quiet and within easy walking distance from restaurants and shops.
Positioned on a hill, parking could be a little tricky at times when B&B was full.
If visiting Torquay again, would definately stay at The Shirley.
Thank you so very much for your kind and considerate review. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. We always try to give guests our all and go out of our way to make everyone welcome. Breakfast is one area where we are always receiving recognition for our efforts and it's good to know that we didn't disappoint.
Needed ropes and crampons to reach our second floor room which was small but beautifully decorated with tiny water glimpses over the roofs across the road. The driveway into the tiny car park is a bit alarming - steep and with a twist. From the car park you start to climb - 19 steps to the reception, a further 23 to the first floor and a final 20 more to the second floor. Have the Poms never heard of elevators! Our room was supplied with coffee/tea/hot chocolate/biscuits, bottled water and a great range of toiletries. The shower had one of those uniquely English electric instant hot water heaters and dodgy water pressure. Breakfast was an affair to remember and our host was wonderful. The hotel is only a few minutes walk from the waterfront.
Thank you so much for your review and we are so sorry that we have taken so long to respond. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Unfortunately the age and character of our house makes it unsuitable to have a lift installed. Indeed if you had advised that you were uneasy and found our stairs difficult to manage we would have gladly allocated you to our lower floor. We do have an access statement on our website which states the number of steps and stairs to each floor.
With regard to the car park it is possible to park six cars easily although there is a small incline at the entrance. Torquay is built on seven hills which gives it the character and scenery for which it is famous. Also the road outside of the guesthouse (which is very quiet) is always available for parking. All that being said we are pleased that you enjoyed your time with us and we would love to see you again should you return to us again in the future.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Torquay look no further than The Shirley. Although we only stayed one night which some other hotels in Torquay do not entertain, we received the best welcome we have experienced anywhere from very friendly and most helpful proprietors. The room and breakfast were both excellent. Very highly recommended.
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful review. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your night at 'The Shirley' and we hope that you will return and stay a little longer on another occasion.
