My wife and I stayed in this hotel from the 5th until 9th May 2014 on a National Holidays booking.
The hotel is not in Torquay as advertised but in Babbacombe and is about 7 miles from the centre of Torquay, however, there was a reasonable bus service into Torquay from the top of the street, the hotel itself is very pleasant, food was fine, the rooms clean, entertainment good and the staff very helpful. Like all hotels there are signs of wear through age but to be fair we were very happy with our holiday in this establishment and would certainly recommend it.

Room Tip: We were in room 101 on the ground floor, lovely room, light and airy, however, the bar cooling system...

Glad to read that you enjoyed your recent stay with us at the Trecarn. We are in Babbacombe, which is a borough of Torquay and we have the advantage of avoiding the crowds in the main season whilst being lucky enough to have lovely surroundings in the area. I hope you will consider returning to us in the future

We have recently had another long weekend, with National Holidays, at the Bay Trecarn Hotel, Torquay. This was our third visit, so National Holidays and the Bay Trecarn must be doing something right. As usual the food was good, the entertainment was excellent, but we were really disappointed to see that no effort has been made to decorate the upstairs bedrooms and corridors. Our room was, as always, very clean and well serviced, but the décor and chipped windowpane was very depressing. It will not put us off returning again but I hope next time to see a difference

Room Tip: The rooms at the front have a nicer outlook.

Thank you for your recent post. I am not sure if you noticed that we are actually currently upgrading ALL windows in the hotel for every room. We have also made a start on refurbishment of all the corridors, plans are in place for 6 bedrooms to be fully refurbished this Autumn and a further 8 next year. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and hopefully knowing that we are working hard to upgrade the accommodation will encourage you to return

Trecarn Hotel, [ Palermo Road, Torquay Devon TQ1 3NW ], is a Bay Hotel, owned by the Shearings Group Ltd, Registered No 05272464, [ Victoria Mill, Miry Lane, Wigan Lancashire WN3 4AG ]

Date: 02 - 05 May 2014
Room No: 237

The depressing feeling of unremitted horror overcame me when the National Holidays coach pulled up at the Trecarn Hotel, Torquay, when it emerged that this was a Bay Hotel.

The worst hotel experienced of my life occurred a couple of months ago in another Bay Hotel. National Holidays have yet to reply to my letter.

The Trecarn Hotel, Torquay’s overgrown weeded garden and spilling skips of builders debris did little to alleviate my sinking feeling of foreboding.

The hotel interior was a tired sad affair clearly showing many years of neglected maintenance and refurbishment.

EVACUTAION INFORMATION
Room evacuation information was inadequate
No information to contact Hotel Reception or outside bodies
Lack of corridor evacuation signage

FIRE ALARM 06:30 hours 3 MAY 2014
Procedure carried out impeccably by the Night Porter and his assistant

ROOM 237
The room and linen were clean; some bathroom fittings were missing and microbial growth was apparent in the shower unit; skirting boards appeared to display an infestation of dry rot.
Daily room was cleaning and bed making
Towels and tea/coffee/milk were replenished
Housekeeping staff are providing the best possible service

DINING ROOM
Table, crockery, cutlery and glass ware were clean
Ann the Dining Room Manager supervised impeccably with an gentle manner and a desire to please
All meals except one breakfast served by Stuart, a new staff member; he, like Jacob, was unfailing patient, pleasant and proficient

FOOD
Mainly of a pre-prepared nature, but carefully and attractively presented
The pork loin on 3 May 2014, prepared by Vicky, was simply excellent
So good to find a properly managed kitchen, with a pride ion their work

RECEPTION
All members of this team were helpful, understanding and pleasant

MANAGEMENT
Clearly this hotel has a strong management team, who, with their colleagues, are working with a difficult hotel but are determined to provide their guests with the best possible holiday experience

The Trecarn Hotel, Torquay is a hotel to recommend; it is everything the Esplanade Hotel Ryde, Isle of Wight is not.

Thank you for your considered views relating to your stay with us this month. As you may see from the previous posts, I do take the time to read and reply to each post individually as feedback is important for us to improve the service we deliver. I was particularly pleased that Stuart and Jacob were singled out for praise as like you said they are both relatively new to the hotel and I shall pass on your comments. Hopefully the positive experience has helped you to consider Bay Hotels for the future

Just returned from a 4 day stay, with National Coach Holidays, at The Bay Trecarn Hotel Torquay. We were not disappointed ,sure a slightly dated hotel but the cleanliness of the rooms ,spotless bedding ,a cosy and spacious room more than made up for a bit of wallpaper falling off walls and chipped paint. The meals were 5* star could not fault them at all, my hubby has a big appetite and did ask for extra and these were supplied from Chloe the waitress with a big smile. In fact all the waiting staff were a credit to the hotel. Also included with the trip was a day in Plymouth and a day in Dartmouth both really enjoyable and safely delivered by our very compenent driver Garry. Would certainly go back again. Don't be put off by the negative comments. If we had taken note of them we would have missed a superb 4 day trip. Thanks to all staff & management at the Bay Trecarn.

Room Tip: We asked for a ground floor room, on booking, and was given a lovely room 1st floor.

We don't claim to be a four star hotel, but we do endeavour to deliver a great holiday for the prices we charge. Feedback like yours makes all the staff feel like we are doing that. Have just returned from a holiday with national holidays to this hotel and after reading reviews was not looking forward to it but was pleasantly surprised on arrival, the rooms are clean and are cleaned daily, the windows were old and steamed up a lot but all of them were in the process of being changed with new ones while we were there. In the dining room you are allocated a table and that's yours for your stay ,the food is good and nothing is to much trouble for the staff in the dining hall I am a fussy eater and thought I would struggle but Jacob and Kirsty who wait on the tables made sure I didn't do without by giving me extra of what I did eat, I don't think I have ever met 2 young people as hard working and as pleasant as they were. Entertainment was good and the price of drinks reasonable and there was a bus stop just around the corner to take you into town. This was the first holiday I have stayed in this country for in 30 years as have always gone abroad but I think my holiday here has made me think about returning here again but for a longer stay next time, thank you to all the hotel staff for a pleasant stay at your hotel x

Thank you for posting your review following your recent stay. I understand your concerns as there are a few negative reviews on here, but I analyse the data regularly and am pleased that the majority of posts are positive with 3 or more "stars", including the top 10 current ones. We are still continuing with replacing all the windows and I think a couple more weeks, weather permitting, we will have all rooms completed. I am pleased that your stay here may encourage you to holiday at home more and we would love to welcome you back here in the very near future!

I am old enough to remember when going to stay at a hotel was a luxury and a better experience than staying at home. Alas that's generally not the case any longer when holidaying in the U.K.
We booked a last minute deal with National coach holidays- 3 nights dinner B&B including travel to Torquay and back for £93! I cannot really complain for the price,it was give away! However there were plenty of people staying in this hotel who would have paid more than that and deserve better I think. The public areas are all good, obviously been recently spruced up. The bedroom and bathroom was really disappointing though. In desperate need of both redecorating, carpeting and new bathroom. There was a hole in the bathroom floor with sticking tape over so you knew it was there. No excuse not to repair that. The bedroom carpet was filthy, all it really needed was a shampoo though so no huge expense plus a coat of paint wouldn't have come amiss. I should not have to leave my nice comfortable home with ensuite modern bathroom to slum it in a hotel in Torquay! I am not saying the cleaning wasn't up to standard because it was. I think the cleaners were doing the best they could under difficult circumstances. The telly was completely useless too. a very ancient box shaped thing that snowed all the time, almost impossible to watch anything. We would have watched the entertainment but you had to sit through an hour and a half of bingo ticket selling followed by bingo before any entertainment started. Just about lost the will to live by then!
The food was O.K.pretty much what you would expect from this type of coach hotel.Again should I be moaning for the price we paid? Probably not but I feel the hotel could be so much more comfortable with not too much money spending and just a bit more effort.

Room Tip: Be aware that not all rooms are served by a lift. If you have trouble with stairs ask for a ground f...

Thank you for your review. You are totally correct that if we put our prices up we could offer a higher standard of accommodation as it would generate more income to re-invest. Torquay is saturated with hotels and there are different markets and mush more expensive places to stay should people wish to pay to do so. Having said that, we do continually invest in our property, with 6 rooms being fully refurbished soon and another 8 in the spring, plus every room is currently having brand new windows fitted. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and you could appreciate the value you received for the price paid. Hopefully you would consider re-visiting

Stayed at trecarn hotel april 2014. This was our second time there and once again had an enjoyable holiday. Asked for a refurbished room and was not disappointed. Bathroom had been completely modernised, with new shower , basin , toilet and flooring. Radiator in bathroom kept our room cosy and warm. Plenty of hot water and nice fluffy white towels. Our beds were very comfortable and we slept well . Room had been newly carpeted and had a modern television. The only small complaint I have is some of the tv channels had poor reception but as we were out most of the time this was not a problem. The staff were very pleasant and service in restaurant good. Thanks again for a pleasant stay. Stan and nancy armstrong.

Room Tip: Ask for refurnbished room.
