My wife and I are just back from a 4 night 5 day holiday with National Tours (19 to 23 May 2012).
Ater an 8 hour journey we arrived at the Hotel? The reception area was dingy to say the least.
We were allocated room 148 and as I cannot walk up steps had to use the lift (Flinstones era)
There was only room for 2 people and a bit of luggage. The doors were of the expanding Mecano lattice style, No thought of health and safety as it was so easy to lop off a finger or two when opening and closing the doors.

Our room was very basic with old well worn chairs. Only one small window could be opened about 3" and the main large window could not be opened at all due to being gunged up with numerous coats of paint. No chance of getting out in case of fire. Going for dnner we found a rather splendid dinning room. The food was excellent and served on time by the staff who worked miracles feeding everyone a 3 course meal in just one hour. They deserve a medal or double the pay they may be getting.

Going up to our room all we wanted to do was rest but at 8pm "Eyes down look in" the dreaded bingo started and we heard every number drawn. 9pm and the MC turned the power up on his Mike and started telling jokes. 10pm the cabaret (Jungle drums that some may pass for music)
The mattress on the bed was full of lumps and hollows and imposible to sleep on especially with the racket coming from the stage (directly under our room) This went on every night until 11.30
A complaint to reception went unheeded and I slept in the chair on the first night.

On the plus side our coach driver Sharron was excellent and was very informative about the places we passed through. The day trips to Dartmouth and Brixham were very good, and good value. All in all the food was very good, the staff very good but the hotel (Whilst in 2010 stated it was being re-furbished) is still in bad need of upgrading.
If you need a good nights rest KEEP AWAY FROM ROOM 148

Room Tip: Ask for a comfortable quiet room away from the entertainment lounge/ballroom beware of room 148

Sorry to read that all the aspects of your stay were not enjoyable, but it was good to read you enjoyed the food and service provided by our restaurant team. We do provide entertainment as it is a part of the holiday package that the majority of our guests look for when booking here. Our Coast & Country Hotels are probably more suited to your travel requirements and I would suggest you visit the website for a look

We stayed here for 3 nights over a weekend.

First impressions from the outside were ok, the hotel looked presentable and was in a nice quiet area, although the hotel has no parking there is lots of free unrestricted onstreet parking in the area.

The staff were great, very friendly and helplful, we had a nice welcome. The reception area, bar and dining room looked clean and tidy and had obviously had some money spent on them somewhen. Although when you looked closer you could see many leaks from the ceiling and surrounding areas with the wallpaper stained and peeling off in most corners. Infact one area was closed off one night of our stay as there was rain, and water was pouring in from the roof above. However looking at the state of the ceiling I would have said this was not a new problem.

Once you leave reception and head to the rooms the corridoors, stairs and landings are very very tatty and tired. It must have been decades since they last had any money spend on them. The walls were tatty with large chunks of plaster missing or bodged up, wallpaper peeling off, the doors had no paint on them, or the varnish/stain had worn away. The glass in two windows was cracked, the tops of the large windows on the stairs was black with mold and mildew and the carpets were threadbare.

Our room was a reasonable size, with a comfy bed. Both the bathroom and bedroom were clean, but the bathroom was tiny with a glass shelf above the sink that was not attched to anything, the glass just slid off (im not a health and safety freek, but that was dangerous) the shower door would not stay on its hinges when you tried to shut it, and one morning we didn't have hot water in the shower. The room was very cold, the heating either didn't work or was not on.

The food was ok. Evening meal ok, the meat was nice anyhow. Breakfast - always cold toast and the quality of hot food not good. So just had cereal.

The all inclussive drink (4 free drinks during the day/evening and glass of wine at dinner) was what got us through the weekend. It was not busy during our stay, so we had no ques for the bar.

The staff were great, but the state of disrepair to the hotel was shocking. I always take comments on Trip Advisor with a pinch of salt, so came to this hotel with an open mind, but previous comments were correct.

We were self drives. This really is a cheap coaching hotel, and thus needs to be removed from Shearings brochures and just used for National Holidays coaches.

The staff have an up hill struggle with this place, although it was not busy during our stay we heard of many people who were wanting room changes. Although its not an expensive hotel by any means it is still not worth the money to stay here.

*However if you are in the area go to 'Bygones' 5 minutes walk around the corner. In a converted cinema on the main road opposite Lloyds Bank. Its a wonderful recreation of times past. Victorian street, cafe, war and general household items so much to see and remind you of the past. We were there for hours *

Thank you for posting a review following your recent stay. We have made considerable investment in the hotel on public areas and a large number of bedrooms and we will continue to do so. We try to offer a good base for holiday makers at a competitive price. The staff do work hard and it always good to read positive comments for their efforts

I have just returned from this hotel & it was a nightmare,it took me 3 room changes to get a room with hot water,no rain coming into room & no heating on,I wasn't the only one to have this problem as all the guests were talking about the lack of everything......The food was shocking, most of it was un edible, the first night I had a pork chop,it was so tough I could have soled my shoes with it ,it had no taste, that went for all the food, don't think the chef knew about seasoning....the lift was a joke,it held 3 people & came out of the ark,it had the old concetina iner door with an outer door, don't think they have made these lifts for years..I will say that the staff were great, very pleasant & helpful....The whole place needs pulling down & building up from new,it is out dated & very sad.....I strongly advise people to stay clear & find modern comfortable accomodation elsewhere........Not happy

Room Tip: best Tip......don't go there at all.......

Having just spent 4days in this hotel we were very disappointed in most areas, once you got passed reception the place was in a poor state of repair, most painted areas needed a lot of t.l.c .Food choice and quality very poor also meal times very short, while we were there there was a fire alarm one evening there were no members of staff around to open fire doors and as the average age of the patrons were 75plus surely there should have been some members of staff available to help some of the one who needed it,All in all a thoroughly disappointing 4days we have been to other Shearings hotels and have been happy with them but this one rather spoilt the rest

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. I was surprised that you didnt find the food to your liking as we normally get plenty of compliments for this area. With regards to the fire alarm, staff are fully trained in their repsonsibilties and we do carry out monthly evacuation drills and evn more frequent weekly checks. Regretably posting staff on each fire exit is not feasible and the staff normally position themselves around the outside of the building to direct to the assembly point. I noted from your review that you have enjoyed previous stays in Shearings hotels so I Hope your experience will not deter you from travelling with us again

Glad to read that you found the staff The "damp" on the walls in the ballroom is unfortunately from a recurring roof leak which is now cured, again!!
