“Good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2014

A theatre trip and overnight stay with friends was made more pleasant by a helpful, friendly staff, and a clean and comfortable room with a lovely view. The bathroom was clean and had a good shower with a large bath towel and hand towel and soap. The bed was comfortable with two pillows and even though the room was basic, the wardrobe space and mirrored doors were enormous. We feared a noisy night, but were delighted that it was quiet. Although the decor is tired and the outside of the building, including the balconies could definitely do with some serious attention, this doesn't spoil the surprisingly wonderful choice at breakfast, served by a young, friendly attentive staff and the very convenient position to town. Limited car parking spaces, and very tight, but overall, recommended.

Having searched the internet I had hoped that this was a genuine bargain but the old addage 'you get what you pay for' holds true. This hotel is ideally located close to the town centre, albeit a healthy 10 minute walk away (taxi recommended for the less fit/able), and commands marvellous views across the bay from the lounge balcony. But it is very tired looking and in desperate need of a refurbishment. Our room, a double, benefited from a circa 1940's decor with varying shades of fading beige. The shower attachment in the bathroom did not work, the coathook fell off the back of the bedroom door and there were signs that cleaning was not given great attention. The car park soon becomes full and the spaces are very narrow so if you do get a space be prepared for knocks and bumps as fellow travellers exit their cars. There is limited nearby on street parking.
There is a swimming pool, lounge area, balcony and a bar but it appears this hotel is frequented by stag and hen parties hence expect some late night noise. We were also awoken by the overflowing gutter outside our room.
There was a guest from the far east at the reception counter enquiring where his family could enjoy a good seafood restaurant. Sadly, and despite the fact the hotel sits on the English Riviera, the receptionist was unable to come up with any ideas!
If you want a lads / girls weekend away this is your hotel otherwise pay that little extra and stay and another one of Torquay's better B&B's or hotels.

Room Tip: We had Room 16 just off the stairs and facing car park, don't choose this one if you want a quie...

this hotel offered us good value for money for the price we paid. cleanliness in the room could have been better (hairs in bathroom, dust, marks on bedsheets) public areas seemed clean though although we didn't explore this much. The room was very dated and the shower took a very very long time to get hot. the bed was rather old and quite uncomfortable. pillows were very flat. lady receptionist was very friendly though. cant comment on breakfast as we didn't go that far. overall for the price I cant really complain

We stayed at The Richmond for 7 nights last week, have stayed in Torquay a few times before but found this hotel to be in a fantastic location, very peaceful, fantastic view over the bay, away from the town but nice easy walk to get to all of Torquay, walked to Cockington, took ferry to Brixham, bus to Paington & boat trip to Dartmouth - all very cheap. For the price we paid the hotel was very good value, all of the team were very friendly and helpful, public areas very clean, our room was spacious, cleaned daily, well furnished with everything we needed - really lovely to sit out on the balcony in the morning and at night!. The managers and their small team never seem to be off duty - really think they should get more support from UK holidays who own the hotel so they are not left working very hard whilst in the line of fire due to some quality issues faced by coach parties expecting a lot more for their money. For very little cost the breakfasts could be improved with better quality cereals, we didn't take evening meals but heard a lot of guests grumbling about them and some of their rooms, really hope the company continue modernising this gem of a hotel and support it's team.

Up side to the hotel was the view from the balcony and the room was comfortable. Down side was the hotel needed up dating. Balcony was very 1970s and needed painting and work done before the season started. The hotel had a feeling of being something years ago but having gone to seed now. Apparently there had been a swimming pool at one time but that was now gone. There was no breakfast included in the price and the staff didn't seem bothered if you wanted breakfast or not. They didnt push it so we had breakfast out. (No nice bacon smells in the morning.) Very odd. Staff arguing about hours and stuff in front of customers as well. Not very customer friendly. Parking tight. I wouldn't stay again as there is a lot of choice in Torquay.

arrived on friday to find a room old and dated from the 1980s? the staff where very helpful tho, no swimming pool as advertised no tv in room, had to ask for towels on second day. we thought it was a good price till we arrived then we felt robbed, but the staff were friendly, the only thing the hotel has is a good location, really disappointed.

Room Tip: try another hotel
