I've just got back from a fantastic 2 night stay in this lovely B&B just a 5 minute stroll from the sea front. I stumbled across this place whilst trawling through TripAdvisor for a nice place that my sister and I could take our Mum away for her birthday weekend. The great TripAdvisor ratings for Cary Court caught my eye and I made my reservation. Booking a room for 3 people can normally prove to be quite a hassle, but there were no problems at all in booking a room to accomodate the three of us here.
When we arrived we were greeted by Linda and Paul, the incredibly friendly and fabulously eccentric owners. Paul immediately relieved us of all our bags and took them off to our room, and Linda took us on a tour of the house and the beautiful garden. She also explained exactly how to get to the seafront, gave us some tips on the nice places to eat in the area and made it clear that if there was anything else we might need, all we had to do was ask.
Our room was fairly small, but this is the only thing I can fault them on, and I won't gripe too much about it because unlike any other B&B the three of us have stayed in (we go away every year for my Mums birthday) they did at least cater for three people rather than two. There were 3 bottles of water, 3 sets of cups, 6 pillows, 3 sets of towels etc. This may seem like a small, insignificant detail but it seems to be something every other B&B in the country is incapable of..! So we were very pleased not to have the usual malarky of phoning down to reception to ask for a 3rd set of everything. On top of this, they have a BYO bar and sitting area downstairs, which is very spacious and far more beautiful than sitting in a bedroom! So whilst the room was small, in all honesty we probably didn't need it to be too much bigger given that we spent most of our time taking full advantage of the BYO bar and the beautiful sitting area and garden. In the summer I imagine it's even more fantastic as they have a heated pool in a sun trap in the garden - lush! Sadly, whilst the weather did manage to reach the dizzy UK heights of 9°C this weekend, we hadn't quite reached the outdoor swimming pool season.
Breakfast was delicious; a choice of a hearty Full English, smoked salmon and scrambled egg or a smoked salmon bagel, plus all you can eat cereals, fruits and yoghurts etc. A great start to the day!
Linda and Paul were full of very helpful advice on the area and surrounding restaurants. For dinner Saturday we chose The Old Vienna, which is rated very well on TripAdvisor and I can see why. It's just a 10 minute walk from Cary Court and well worth a visit! Our Friday night option, fish, chips and champagne on the beach, didn't work out quite so well when we discovered that virtually all the fish and chip shops in Torquay close well before dinner time out of season! So we found ourselves eating in Star Thai, which was unfortunately not very nice - definitely one to avoid! So if, like us, you decide to embark upon a crazy plan to eat outside on the beach in less-than-friendly temperatures, make sure you ask Linda and Paul for a back-up plan recommendation!
Cary Court offer great value for money; we paid just £190 for a 2 night stay for 3 people, although I don't know how much that increases in the busy summer season. I would definitely recommend them as a great, affordable place to stay in an excellent location. If ever I find myself back in Torquay they will be my first choice for accommodation.
