“Another lovely stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2013 via mobile

We first came to The Somerville in late March hoping for some Spring sunshine but alas, our visit coincided with one of the coldest and most miserable periods of the year! The only thing that rescued our break from disaster was our stay at The Somerville, where the warmth of the welcome went a long way to compensate (see my earlier review). We surmised that if we enjoyed it in such adverse conditions then a repeat visit would be worth while. How right we were.
This time we arrived at the beginning of an extremely hot spell of weather, to find that all the windows in our room had thoughtfully been opened prior to our arrival and crisp cotton sheets had been left in case we didn't want to use the duvets. As it was my birthday a bottle of champagne had been ordered which arrived not only chilled but with chilled glasses. We did not drink it all and left it in the fridge where we found clean chilled glasses the next day. It is this attention to detail and personal service that makes The Somerville so special. You rarely have to ask for anything, Adam and Grant always seem to be one step ahead of you. I feel a third visit a distinct possibility!

Adam and Grant were the perfect host's. There was a friendly welcome to a sad goodbye. The Guesthouse was spotless the breakfast was so delicious I had to ask for an extra sausage the next day. With so must choice on offer. It's hard not to help yourself to The home made cookie on the way back to your room at the end of the day.with just a 5 minutes walk to the sea front it was 5 star all round from us.

Room Tip: We had the court yard pently of room

Thank you for such a delightful review.

We're very pleased that you had such a nice time and appreciated our breakfasts and cookies. Of course some fantastic weather has also helped make this a vintage year for a UK holiday..

what a lovely stay at The Somerville, nothing was to much trouble.
We stayed in the garden suite and it was lovely, breakfast on both days was great and there was great choices.
Little touches made the stay fantastic ie tv in bathroom, homemade cookies available all day , fresh fruit and fresh milk for your tea and coffee.

We have stayed here many times now and I think have just about had a try in most of the rooms. Arrived Saturday afternoon and as usual met with a huge smile and shown to our room which we hadn't had before. I would usually rate this hotel with a 5 but this time we found the ensuite shower room a tad too small. Other than that we had a great stay, the room wasn't overly hot even though we stayed over the hottest weekend of the year. The breakfasts were huge and the selection was large. the hotel is spotless everywhere and we will stay again as soon as we visit Torquay again.

The Somerville was absolutely beautiful and the location great (away from the ferals)... The room we stayed in was very small but well appointed, hence the reason for 4 stars. The breakfast was fantastic, best on our whole trip, huge choice and beautifully presented.
This is by no means a reflection on the hotel or lovely owner, but we would not return to Torquay. We made the mistake on our first night of having a drink at a pub on the water front! Big mistake, very tacky, and the pub (The Yacht) was awful, we left our drinks because of the REALLY foul language and stories from a young bogan, tattoo covered, shirtless group. I'm by no means a prude, but there is only so much you can take!
This and the numerous hens and bucks parties, really turned us off Torquay, which is such a pity, because it could be so beautiful.

Thank you for the review and the kind words about The Somerville. There are a few issues raised in what has been said which I think are worthy of a response.

Firstly, size of room is always dependant on the type of room that's booked. We have one Standard room, various Deluxe rooms, Junior Suites and Suites. We are always happy to give rooms sizes before guests booked. Obviously, the more you pay the larger the room you will get.

We are deeply sorry that the guest did not like Torquay. However, this is a one sided and unfair view of a multi-faceted town. It is true that on a Friday and Saturday night the harbour side is busy and that some of the drinking establishments are more pleasant than others. On check in and throughout our guests' stays we do make a great effort to recommend appropriate places to visit. Guests are obviously not obliged to listen to any of our recommendations.

In every guest's home town there will be drinking establishments they wouldn't be seen dead in and the same is obviously true in Torquay. The Yacht is a place we have never recommended to anyone.

The guest has complained vigorously in this review and on the one they have left for Torquay itself about men without shirts... The heat wave that has hit us in the last few weeks has meant that many men are shirtless. Not everyone will have a fine chislled body but I think you would have to be extremely hard hearted to deny even the overwegiht a little sun on their skins after so much rotten weather in the last few years. It might even encourage some of them to take better care of themselves.

Finally, Torquay supports many fine restaurants, has a successful dynamic theatre, a diverse range of visitor attractions, a thriving marina and some wonderful coastal scenery. This means that Torquay attracts some very discerning people many of whom choose to return time and time again. It might not be for everyone but the melting pot that is Torquay is wonderfully eccentric, eclectic and welcoming.

We were welcomed by Grant and orientated to the hotel and area, our room was stunning and the bathroom quite unbelieveable! Delicious home made cookies were available at all times and the breakfast was delicious (expecially the strawberry and rose fool made by Adam). Superb hotel, excellent location, wonderful food, genial hosts, beautiful gardens, immaculately clean - what more can be said!

Room Tip: Somerville suite was excellent.
