The Richwood
Date of stay 4th August 2014
Location 1 - Poor
Cleanliness 1 - Poor
Facilities 2 - Below Average
Service / Staff 3 - Average
Would you recommend us to other travellers? No
Comments about us Veronica and Saidia are very nice people and it is a shame that their pride and joy hotel has deteriorated and is lacking maintenance. We booked a premier twin room and a standard single room. Our twin room was extremely cramped and not clean, we found a flip flop and dirt under the bed when we had occasion to move the bed as we had dropped something. Curtains did not fit the window so we couldn't blank out the light. We could not open the wardrobe door as the bed blocked the way, the floor sloped towards the window and was soft underfoot. The toilet seat was hanging off and the toilet brush was disgusting. We also had to point out that our rooms were not serviced on the first morning and thereafter only had the tea/coffee topped up and bins emptied, nothing else was done to clean the rooms.
We were so disappointed with our room.
The single room smelt of cigarettes and alcohol, the bed was very low and sunken in the middle. The toilet seat in this room was also very loose and again the toilet brush was filthy. The fire escape outside the room/window was being used as a smoking area and people were using it very late at night and very early in the morning so my grand daughter who was using the room had to be moved to our room and my husband had to use the single room. The pool area was very dirty and totally unkept, even the games area was shoddy.
The pool was not heated as advertised nor was it clean, the water was cloudy and full of debris and there was a charge of £10 to use the spa for half an hour, we did not use.
Also we were charged £5 every time my credit card was used, £15 in all, (£5 for deposit, £5 for balance and £5 for refund of overcharge) .
We paid extra for a full English breakfast each day which was acceptable as we did not want a continental breakfast of toast and cereal.
We had so looked forward to our stay, we had looked at The Richwood website before booking and had thought we had booked a 3star hotel, well maintained with plenty of great facilities, our opinion is that The Richwood had once been great but due to lack of maintenance and the overstating of rooms the hotel was suffering from lack of clientele and therefore lacking the funds to properly maintain it.
The decoration in both rooms was abysmal especially the blown ceiling paper in the premier twin room.
I did notice works vehicles there which implies that rooms are being let to workmen, no problem with this other than to emphasise that the hotel is catering to commercial clientele and not holidaymakers who expect a lovely holiday hotel.
Tips for other travellers We can not recommend this hotel for a relaxing holiday.
We never tried their evening meals as they were too expensive for a family.
Too many don't do notices.

Reply to “Disappointment in Torquay” and “Do Not Book Here”
We are very sorry that this family of grandparents and grand-daughter did not enjoy their stay.
We thank them for their feedback on two points (and wonder why they did not complain when they were here?):
The toilet brushes have been changed; under the beds: the cleaner has been told off!
However their particularly damning and untrue accusations have to be addressed.
- The comments about the rooms, breakfasts and cleanliness: we refer the discerning reader to our other, very good, reviews from people using the same rooms, eating the same breakfasts.
- We charge for the use of credit cards, but did not charge on the refund.
- The pool; these guests were enjoying it a lot of the time! It is pristine clean, cleaned regularly and there is no debris! The leaves around the pool come from the Atlantic wind; the area is regularly swept.
- The comment about the “rubbish” Lebanese cuisine, which they did not try, is clearly racist.
- We service the rooms between 11 and 12 daily. If guests want their room serviced we need to be able to do so; when belongings are strewn all over the beds, furniture and floor we cannot do so. Staff are told NOT TO TOUCH THE PERSONAL BELONGINGS OF GUESTS, we are not a five star hotel or their servants, we do not fold up and tidy rooms; we fill up the complimentary beverages, take their rubbish, clean the bathroom and, if we can, make the bed, vac the floor and dust .

We stayed at Richwood for two nights during August. On arrival we received a very warm welcome from the owner who was happy to show us all the hotel had to offer and to our room. The double was compact but fine and everything was clean if the decor a little dated and the shower was basically a power shower which was nice. We didn't use the pool in the end but lovely feature to have and there is a communal area with pool table and books etc. Breakfast was again basic but all you need and if you wanted the upgrade to fu!l English is an option. Also I was staying with my girlfriend and the hotel could not have been more LGBT friendly as an aside!

Overall definitely good value for money and lovely friendly vibe.

This 'B&B' hotel is appalling!
This B&B has long since had its day, in the picture of the pool it looks to be a well presented family hotel but do NOT be fooled!!! around the pool is poorly maintained with debris and inside the pool there are many foreign objects.
We were promised a super room but it turned out to be a room riddled with damp and was very small. The 'Lebanese cuisine' is a load of rubbish... if a Lebanese cuisine is fruit and fiber and toast, I think not.
Even though the hospitality of the owners was truly warming it did not make up for the poor accommodation. On arrival we were told that rooms will be serviced daily but this did not happen on the first 3 out of 4 days we were there!
Another bad thing was that the rooms smelt of smoke and alcohol which is not pleasing to sleep in.
My experience is not going to take me back to the richwood as it was a poor stay.
The hotel has 4 star prices with 2 star quality and its £5 for; 1 over done egg, sausage. mushroom and beans. frankly at The Weatherspoons Pub down the road was a better breakfast for £3.50.
I hope this gives you a clear vision of the richwood in its current state.

Room Tip: "don't get a room at the front of the hotel as it has a smoking balcony that stinks out surrounding rooms, also try and get a room that dosent have a slope as the floor slopes in the rooms and put you off balance if your elderly you might fall"

My partner and I traveled from Phoenix, Arizona to London, then on to Brighton and spent the last 4 days of our 10 day holiday in Torquay. If we could do it all over again, we would have spent the entire 10 days at The Richwood. Other hotels were cramped, uninviting and the hosts cold and uninterested that we were knew to England and truly wanted to have the best experience visiting. it wasn't until arriving at The Richwood did we begin to feel welcome on our UK summer vacation. Some much time and effort was taken at answering our questions as well as helping us plan local excursions. We looked forward to sampling the local cuisine, however, after our first experience out in town, we chose to try the small restaurant located on the property. AMAZING food! Both owners and chefs Veronica and Saida blew our minds with such wonderful delights over the remainder of our stay. Our room was clean and so comfortable and the premises, although booked at the time, we extremely quiet with no late noises or audible sounds of foot traffic, televisions, or large groups. The pool and spa located on property were a morning start to the day and a restful end to a busy day. Saida shared her customs, recipes and stories of her family and Veronica kept to our every need. I thought at first it was special attention because we were from the US, but my partner noticed it was simply the 'norm'. They brought us together with another couple and we made new friends on our trip as well. The hotel looked newly remodeled and fresh. Smells of new carpet and paint were evident and pride in the upkeep.

Room Tip: We communicated our needs when we checked in...they accommodated perfectly.

The Richwood gets a resounding thumbs up from us.

Approachable, friendly and helpful owners make this B&B hotel good value for money.

My son and I spent five days here in July 2014 and greatly appreciated our clean and spacious room (number 15) - plenty of case/storage room and opportunity to spread our belongings

What distinguishes is the number of free-of-charge amenities - a swimming pool/spa ouside and a relaxation room indoors (with pool table). We didn't make full use of them, the point being that we could or should have! Our holiday itinerary did not give us the opportunity to sample the delights of the in-house Lebanese restaurant - maybe next time! The hotel bar was pleasant. with a selection of favourably-priced drinks. An ideal location for befriending the other guests.

For those without transportation, The Richwood is literally a stone's throw away from Torre railway station and a ten minute walk away from the centre of Torquay, ideally situated to reach all of the attractions in the Torbay area.

The basic breakfast more than matched our needs. We could have upgraded it - at an acceptable price!

Wi-Fi access was uncomplicated and reliable - best I have experienced anywhere to date!

Non-smokers (like ourselves) need not be concerned by the establishment's smoker-friendly policy as at no point in our stay were our noses challenged in any way. There's room for everybody here!

Room Tip: Premier room
