“Best Sunday lunch for miles”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2012

The hotel restaurant is excellent with superb food and service and represents exceptional value for money. Service is very traditional with the staff in tails and the Hotels owners overseeing everything. Nothing is too much trouble and after lunch there is a spacious lounge to take your coffee in and relax enjoying the sea view.
It does tend to appeal to the more senior customer which is not a bad thing.
I don't believe the bedrooms live up to the standard of the food.

Room Tip: not sure but there is a railway at the back and road at the front.

Stayed for a few nights at this very nice traditional hotel, full of good old fashioned traditions, which is lacking in a lot of the modern style hotels.

Meals and breakfasts were very good with a very good choice at all times, and even the fact the hotel was busy the service and standard of the food was always maintained.

Rooms were in keeping with the hotel, quaint and older type furniture, although TV could do with an update. Bathroom was basic but always kept clean.

Well worth a look the next time you are in the area.

Room Tip: Nice view on sea facing rooms, but road very noisy

Have been coming since 2004 and have experienced different classes of rooms. This time arrived with my brother and his partner. Rooms were excellent, clean and not normal chain style. The dining is silver service and food is excellent. It has character that is often lacking in larger group hotels. The only downside is the noise from the road but that is the price of a prime seaside location. Normally take advantage of regular offers which provide excellent value for money.

Right on the sea front at Torquay, great sea views but also on a main road so can be noisy. Food quality is good for a hotel catering for so many people and the menu is changed nightly so if you stay for a few nights you won't run out of choices. Extensive wine list at reasonable prices. Staff are very willing and pleasant. Restaurant is very grand (also very large) and the drawing room with original fireplace and paintings is very traditional.
There are however a number of things that they could do which could turn an okay experience into a much better one:
When the GM is on duty in the restaurant everything seems to work much better - he knows what to do and how to do it - however it seems as if he keeps much of this competence a secret from the staff - they are willing but lack training and things never seem to be quite right. The restaurant manager and the wine waiter seem not to have the skills and polish the grand setting deserves and little customer service systems in place would reduce much irritation. The tables in the dining room are very close together and even when the restaurant has plenty of space people are still sat at tables next to each other and very close - yes it is easy to get this rectified by asking, as mentioned earlier the staff are very willing - but correcting something that is not quite right doesn't seem to be a learing experience - it's a bit groundhog day - unless the GM is looking after you to need to ask for the same things to be changed every time. The wine glasses provided on the dining table would not even be considered acceptable in most average to good pubs these days - let alone in a restaurant with such a grand appearance and such a wine list. So if you like a decent glass for your wine ask for glasses from the bar - they are much better suited to a good bottle of wine.
I suspect this hotel is much better suited for groups travelling together than for couples.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are very small so if you prefer space go for a superior. Rooms with a garden sea vie...

I was 1 of a group of about 100 ladies who stayed at the Livermead House for the weekend. The staff were all very helpful, polite and friendly as well as being proffesional. I've stayed there several times before and plan to do so again next year. The food was excellent quality with plenty of variety and lots of choice. Altogether a very happy weekend,

We stayed at the Livermead for a dance break but added some extra days for our own relaxation. Both halves of the greak were good with good service, good food and good public areas. Our room was very good but having been before we knew which room to pick.

In particular we would like to place on record our appreciation of the Restaurant staff. They always work very hard to make mealtimes enjoyable and offer an excellent level of service. The service in the rest of the hotel is also good but this restaurant really stands out.
