We have just returned from a lovely break at the Headland Hotel. We found all the staff very friendly and attentive especially in the restaurant. The food was good. Room small but recently repainted with new furnishings and lovely views over garden and sea. Bathroom very clean but needed updating. Excellent location, stunning views. Whilst hills very steep for the elderly we did not find this a problem ourselves, with a 1/4 mile walk down to the lovely Meadfoot bay. Hotel parking limited but street parking not a problem. Overall we felt it was a good value break.

We stayed at the Headland hotel for 7 nights and had a wonderful stay. The location is as the title suggests on the headland looking out across Torbay. The views are stunning and the area is very quiet and relaxing. We were pleasantly surprised upon arrival, as we booked late and for a very good price. The hotel exceeded our expectations in many ways. The food was great and the service efficient and friendly. All of the staff made us feel very welcome and could not do enough to help us. Our room was comfortable and much more than we expected. As the previous reviews says, there were a couple of weddings happening at the hotel during our stay, but we certainly did not feel like we came second best to the wedding guests. We had a problem during one of the weddings and the staff were excellent in helping us to sort things out, especially the two managers (sorry can't remember your names). The lift did break down, but these things happen and it was fixed within an hour, and during this time I saw many of the staff helping guests with luggage. The hotel is at the top of a hill above Torquay (as the name suggests), which only added to our stay as is it in a quiet and secluded loaction. Im not sure why the previous review complains about this, as we were told about this when we asked during our booking and were told that the hotel runs a free taxi service from the hotel into Torquay itself.
I would reccomend this hotel to anyone wanting a relaxing stay in Torquay and will be visiting again in the future - Thank you for a lovely holiday.

If you are under 65 years do not stay here, or if you are elderly do not attempt to leave the hotel as there is a huge hike from the hotel into Torquay. There were four of us ranging from 47-52 years and this place felt like an asylum. It looks impressive from the outside but the rooms we had were crap to say the least. We had room 163 which had a nice view until a coach pulled up and blocked it. The bed had a huge dip in the middle! and we had to keep asking for extra milk coffee, and clean towels. The other couple with us had the room from hell 168, NO SHOWER, and totally dilapitated, overlooking the skips! I asked the useless girls on reception if there was another room available, or upgrade to somewhere with a shower and was just told no! we can offer you an attachment for the tap or you can go down two floors and use the shower in the sauna! On the first night we requested use of an iron which never appeared. We had to ask another member of staff for an iron the following day, which did appear straight away.
The breakfast was just about edible but you had to have what was given as it was not a buffet breakfast, and were pre-cooked and kept warm, the bacon could be used to cover the hole in the ceiling in the bedroom. The waitresses were very helpful though.
There was a bar manager who was the only employer there that knew anything about customer care. There were two wedding on the weekend we were there and all other guests seemed to come second best. As we were due to leave the only lift in the hotel broke down, leaving many elderly and disabled guests struggling with stairs with suitcases, no sign of any porter staff to help whatsoever. This hotel needs to be closed and totaly renovated as it feels like an old hospital at the moment.
If you wanted to go down into Torquay it was walkable, but we walked back up on the first day and it took us ages, prices for taxi down was around £3.50, and back up to the hotel are about £5.50. pubs and clubs in Torquay were good though, like Banx, R&B, Blue, and we had a fab meal in Camelot. Would go back to Torquay but definately to this hotel!! please I am not exagerating stay somewhere else as it may spoil your holiday!!!!

Had a family room and a single room next door to each other, we took my mother-in-law away. Was a bit apprehensive when i read some of the reviews, but the food was fantastic, yes the room could have done with a lick of paint, ensuite clean. The staff were accomodating with a little one of 18 months, they kept my fresh milk in the fridge and were obliging to fetch it even at 6.00am! The price for this weekend was a special at £99 DB&B which i thought was fantastic and no other hotel can match this price. Didn't try the pool although it was very warm (dipped my toes in). Yes some of the guests were older than us but we just wanted a quiet break. Love Torquay and over the years we get there at least once a year for a short break, definately be returning to the Headland.

My wife and I stayed from 27th June for a week,it is in a lovelly setting the check in staff and indeed all the staff are excellent but as soon as we entered our room we could see that the room itself and indeed the whole hotel needs updating, the room was quite big with sea views from the window,we had paid the top price for a seaview, the room had a large screen LCD but looked like it had not been decorated/painted for years, the bathroom was ok but the shower was useless as the cold water pressure was too low so we had to bath it every night.breakfasts were ok,we never ate dinner choosing to go out instead. One real disappointment was the coaches that parked right in front of the views sometimes 3 coaches I mean what did I pay the extra for to look at coaches. If the management read this why oh why do the coaches have to park there when just above is a big car parking area. One thing I would say is loads of elderly people who in the main were really nice,we are in our fifties but even we felt like young kids.I doubt if I would book here again, the photos of the rooms on the website are misleading.

We have just come back from a short stay at this hotel. The hotel is in a beautiful setting with outstanding views of torbay. The room we stayed in was comfortable EXCEPT for the bathroom which left an awful lot to be desired! The shower did not work properly and all we got was a trickle which, after a day out was extremely annoying! The bathroom was tiny and quite smelly with old lino on the floor, in great need of upgrading! The food was mediocre for our tastes, typical mass produced hotel fayre. The hotel took coach trips every day of elderly people (nothing against elderly people!) just a point to note if you prefer the company of younger or a more mixed age group clientelle. You need to be fit to tackle the hills but if you can manage the steep winding paths then you will be rewarded with glorious views of torbay!! Unfortunately most of the clientelle were pensionable age and not able to manage the walks!

Overall the hotel is in a lovely position, if you are fit, but would benefit from bathroom upgrades and a reappraisal of the menus. Would not recommend this hotel at the moment but if bathrooms and food were upgraded then yes.

This was my first trip to Torquay and therefore to this hotel and I was not disappointed. On arrival, the first thing you notice is the wonderful location, high above Torquay with superb views. The car park is very small and will only accommodate about 20 cars. However on-street parking is free and as the hotel is located in a cul-de-sac, there was never an issue.

Booking in was quick, efficient and staff we very pleasant.

We stayed the weekend with friends. It would be fair to say we had asked for the best room they had available and paid a small amount extra. The room (144) was situated on a corner and so had a view of the sea on two sides. Wonderful. The room had a 26 (or 32 inch) flat screen with lots of channels. The bed was very comfortable and the room was decorated well. The en-suite was also excellent and appeared to be new. My friends room was less so and clearly this was an on-going project as each room is up-graded. He overlooked the car park at the front, had an old TV with few channels. However the en-suite was good.

The hotel has two large bar areas with pleasant staff. A small complaint (and only a personal one) was there was no decent beer....no real ale, either on tap or in bottles. Double Diamond was not my thing!! However the Guiness was good.

The weekend we chose was hot and sunny and so we were able to experience the outside areas. These were good with lots of tables and chairs. Thegarden area seems to be wasted. It is very large but again, this seemed to be 'work in progress' and no doubt in time will see much improvement. I would like to have seen more strategic seating and planting.

The pool is very warm and although not enormous, ideal for small children.

Meals....we had Breakfast and evening meal. These were very good and kitchen staff should be praised for the quality of the food. Always hot and served quickly and very efficiently. Staff should be commended for their friendly service.

Every night there was some kind of entertainment. This was not my thing but again, this was a personal view. They were well attended by other guests so I think this speaks for itself.

On the Saturday the hotel held a wedding (as it is licenced to do so) This appeared to run like clockwork. One large bar area was closed off and the room set up for the reception. We had a peak before the guests arrived and it looked magnificent. In the evening the couple had ordered a band, which we were able to listen to (we sat in the very well equipped reception area) and this only added to the weekend for us.

From the hotel, you can walk to the seafront down a fairly steep footpath. This takes about 10 minutes there....20 back!! Torquay is a short drive away but the hotel does run a bus/taxi there and back....we never used this so cannot comment.

Would I recommend this to others....definately. The hotel is showing real signs of improving and therefore it can only get better. It is already good so no doubt prices may increase!!

Good Bits....Location, Staff, Food

Needs improving...Beers at Bar, Gardens.
