We tried this hotel in spite of some mixed reviews and were very pleased we did. The room we had was a standard grade, but although there was no sea view it was comfortable, clean and well-appointed. We were impressed with the restaurant service and the cuisine which was good, nicely presented traditional fare.

Entertainment throughout the Christmas period we found to be well received by almost everyone, and there seemed to be a very happy atmosphere amongst the guests and staff alike.

It is quite an old building, but modernisations have been tastefully done. We raised a couple of queries and requests with the Reception staff, and these were addressed and resolved promptly.

The daily free taxi service to and from the harbour was well used by many of our fellow guests, a nice touch.

Although we live in Scotland we plan to return to the Overmead this summer, as we found it to be well run and very good value.

I stayed at the Overmead a few months ago and was delighted with it, so i decided to go back over the Christmas period. Yet again I was not dissapointed with the Overmead. Having just read some of the reviews i am very confused as my experience was excellent and so was everyone else that i spoke to. The staff as last time were polite, courteous & only to willing to help (don't forget this was their Christmas as well). The food was great but there so much of it, every day we had full breakfast, lunch, evening meal and lots of mince pies and other goodies in between, i now need to go on a diet! Entertainment was provided daily and was of a very high standard. Upon arrival in the room we got a gift of chocolates & a snowman and then on Christmas day got another lovely present. Our room as last time was clean, tidy and had just had a new bathroom fitted along with new windows, just showing that even in these hard times the hotel is trying to improve itself. Overall we paid under £750.00 for both of us 4 nights full board, all the presents and entertainment. I have already booked a short break in January under their special offer. Lets not forget this is a three star hotel offering extremly good value for money (the local Premier Inn was more expensive with none of the personel service). I felt i needed to write this review as most of the time people will only write about bad points and never the good and there certainly are some good to be had at the Overmead.

We stayed with friends for four nights over the new year, on the first night we sat down for evening meal to discover my wife had a live worm in her salad, i can still see it now wriggling like mad on the plate, and all we recieved from the management was an apology saying he will speak to the suppliers. They also have a problem with rats as we often saw them run across the patio at the front of the hotel, and in the room you could hear something running through the cavities at night. Not a great experience!!!

My partner and I stayed at the Overmead Hotel in March 08 and were so pleased with the hotel that we booked another holiday while we were there for August 08. HOWEVER this proved to be the worst holiday that we have ever had. During the initial visit the hotel staff were very friendly and our room was fantastic. It had obviously recently been redecorated and was very clean and tidy. The decoration was very modern and the room had a fabulous view. However during our second stay our room was in the basement underneath the kitchen, which felt and looked like the servant quarters. It was very dirty, shabby, noisy, smelly and cold. The room was damp and the sewerage pipes banged all night and the room smelt strongly of sewerage. It was very noisy the entire night and the whole experience was very upsetting for myself when it was supposed to be a romantic get away. My partner informed the manager of our complaints and the only reply we received was a very inappropriate joke about of our room smelling of sewerage. We complained several times and were told that nothing could be done but they did eventually give us an air freshener. We were not even offered an apology of any sort or money off our holiday. When we left we filled in a complaint card and requested for the manager to contact us. My partner has telephoned the hotel several times but we are still waiting for the manager to call us back 4 months on. I was very upset with the whole experience, as our first holiday there was so enjoyable and relaxing. I could not wait to leave the hotel on the second occasion. I would also like to note that during our first holiday the hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating and the food was fantastic. However by our next holiday the staff were rude and unaccommodating and the food was far from fantastic. If the hotel could assure a holiday like the first one we had there we would go back in a shot. However I would need to be paid to repeat the second holiday. So good luck on the room and service that you receive. It was amazing how one hotel could offer such diversity in rooms and service. What was even more annoying was the fact that our second holiday was almost double the price of the first!!

Have just returned from Xmas Break. The hotel is suited for escorted parties and mobile persons as it is very much out on a limb. On this visit the hotel was full with the majority from two coach parties of more than pensionable age. Rooms were on the whole small with smaller ensuite. Entertainment every evening of a good standard but very restricted viewing as to the design of the cafeteria style 'lounge'. The best thing of the trip was by the food. Quality first class and service some of the best around. Would I return. Doubtful, with the main reason being the rooms. The Manager was very good with a very hands on approach and being always available.

My husband and i decided to take our 18 mth old daughter away before christmas, we dont have much money to spare but we thought we would blow some of our savings on a lovley hotel, we looked on the interent and thought what a lovley posh hotel the overmead was, HOWEVER, upon arrival we struggled to park our car in the smallest of car parks, we had to be home before 3 to get a space. We were then left to find our own way to our room, and when we opened the door expecting a beautiful room for the money we payed and from we saw on the website, we were so so dissapointed, we had paid for a premier suite, yes, we had fantatsic sea veiws but apart from that the website was a con, the rooms looked nothing at all similar, the evening meal was ok however only had a small choice, everything was covered in some source iv never heard off. This hotel is perfect for the over 50's, we are in our 30s and were the youngest family there. Overall i really wouldnt recommend this hotel to anyone, for simply one reason, the manager, i would not recommend anyone gave him a single penny.

  • Liked — The fact i spent time with my husband and daughter
  • Disliked — The fact we were not informed its a hotel used by old aged pensioners on coach tours.

We have just returned from staying 3 nights at the Overmead Hotel ,Torquay.
A group of us (30)+in numbers, go away each year for a weekend. This year was possible one of our best weekends we have had in years. We were met by Toby the manager who was extremely helpful and explained the hotel routine. We were spread throughout the hotel with some couples getting better rooms than others, (the luck of the draw.) Regardless of which room we were in there were no complaints.
The dining room and waitress sevice was exceptional. The food was good and they have a very good wine list.
A number of our friends sampled the warm outside pool and were very happy.
The hotel and rooms are very clean.
The hotel is about 15 minutes outside torquay. You can easily walk in to Torquay but due to the hills it's a taxi back which cost about £3.50/4.00. However the hotel supply free taxis at 10AM inbound and 4.30PM return.
A great weekend. Thanks Toby and staff
