“Still room for improvement”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

My wife and I have just returned from 5 days at this hotel, having booked a Club room with a sea view. The views across Torbay are indeed magnificent and the hotel enjoys an elevated and enviable position above the town. On arrival in our room we were confronted with an apple and orange and an unmarked bottle of water. No further fruit materialised during our stay and the bottle was, we assume, simply refilled from the tap on a daily basis. Having received much more in the way of hospitality from hotels not blessed with 3 star ranking, we were less than impressed.

In place of soap in the bathroom we were confronted by wall-mounted containers of gel with a plunger (rather like the kind you get in motorway toilets) which proved to be very stiff and practically impossible to operate. The sink was tiny but the shower over the bath was easy to use and effective.

The Polish waiters in the dining-room did a sterling job with a constant smile and won deserved plaudits. The coffee served with breakfast was, however, lukewarm at best. I did not appreciate the unannounced photographer however who toured the room one evening taking pictures we neither requested or wanted. We were also surprised to find ourselves surrounded by the patrons of three coach parties (I realise hotels need to tap into this market to make ends meet) but the noise during mealtimes precluded any attempt at conversation between us. We also discovered on Friday that our planned early departure was delayed while a coach blocked our exit until all passengers were safely on board and the coach released us at 9.30 am.

A pleasant 5 day break (with fantastic weather) in an impressive and comfortable hotel but "could do better".

Thank you for your valuable, mainly positive feedback, and I am glad that you had a pleasant stay. We had in fact given you a free upgrade from a Club to one of our lovely dual-aspect Executive rooms which we trust you enjoyed. The token fruit and bottled filtered water are merely there as part of our welcoming package upon arrival, which also includes complimentary tea and coffee served in the lounge, continually replenished refreshments in the room, and our daily courtesy taxi service to the harbour and back. The range of high-quality Damana toiletries we provide in each of our bathrooms for our guests’ convenience, includes Hand/ Body Lotion, Cleansing Gel and Body/Hair Gel, and their dispensers are wall-mounted to maintain hygiene and avoid clutter. We would have been happy to assist and rectify any difficulty you may have had in operating them, if you had only notified us, and conventional individually wrapped soaps and shampoos are always available upon request as an alternative.

I am pleased you found our waiting staff to do a good job, and as such they would have readily replaced the coffee which you mentioned. I am sorry you did not appreciate the photographer who merely provides a service requested by some of our guests, which should not have impacted upon you at all.

Being full, as we are for much of the time, there may have been a lot of other guests in the Restaurant at the same time as you, and therefore a fair amount of noise, but we would have been happy to arrange for you to dine in our quieter private dining area, and/or you could have dined after the peak period, any time up until 20.30. Any vehicle blocking your exit could have speedily been moved to enable your departure, regardless of whether it was a car or a coach. Just a word to our friendly and approachable team could have easily resolved the issues you only now mention, whilst you were here.

I hope that the above will go some way to providing evidence of our on-going commitment to “do better”, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Headland on some future occasion.

Enjoyed a weekend break and found the hotel to be delightful and the staff very friendly and helpful. Food was excellent as were the staff in the restaurant. Will most definitely look forward to staying at this hotel again in the future.

The hotel is even better than the pages on the web site , you must visit to appreciate the full impact .

There has been a great deal of improvement and attention to detail over recent years , which shows in the pride displayed by the General Manager , the Office Staff and the Maintenance Team .

The area is great for walkers , as its on the coastal path , with so many opportunities to capture pictures of the many diverse subjects ..

This is the most friendly hotel we have ever stayed at , which we believe emulates from the staff , being so welcoming and helpful !!.

We stayed in a Club Room 132 , overlooking the bay , which was comfortable with a breathtaking view .

The only minor point was the the very small shower ,which was on 30 inches wide , meaning that it was easier to leave the door open , when it was being used ( understand upgrades are being planned )

In conclusion ,I hope this review will attract more bookings , if so they are greatly deserved by every one at the Headland Hotel .

.

.

Room Tip: Must book a room overlooking the gardens and the bay

Thank you Martin for your lovely review and kind words. It is very pleasing that you have noticed the steady improvement in the hotel, over recent years. We aim to continue moving forward, with constant re-investment, a fabulous team of committed staff and our beautiful setting, all contributing towards our popularity as a holiday venue.

Some of our shower cubicles are a standard size, but other options may be available, and of course a lot of rooms have bath, all of which have a shower above if there is not a seperate shower cubicle.

We will continue to work hard to keep ahead of "the competition" and we look forward to welcoming you back here before too long.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights over the Bank Holiday weekend, we have stayed before so know both the Hotel and the area. We were greeted by happy efficient reception staff and despite the fact that we were a little early, we were able to access our room immediately. The room 175 was a club room on the second floor, it was clean and everything worked and the bed was comfortable it also had a great sea view. Dinner that night was very good with a good choice of starters, main course and sweet all served in an efficient and friendly manner. Next morning Breakfast was good and again served quickly and efficiently. A good day out on the local buses and back to the Hotel for Dinner, again good a good nights sleep and Breakfast.
This is our fourth time at this Hotel and each time it impresses, especially as regards value for money, on each visit we have noticed small improvements in the Hotels décor etc and obviously Toby and his staff care about this Hotel. O.K. not everything was perfect the entertainment the second night was not really our cup of Tea but all in all a very good stay in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Would we stay again yes we will.

Your feedback on another good stay with us is much appreciated. I am pleased we impressed you again, particularly with regard to value for money. We do have a team here that care about the hotel, and our guests' enjoyment, and it is nice that you have picked up on it. We look forward to your next stay, and as we change our entertainment around throughout the year, we hope to tick that box each evening as well.

I visited the Headland from 16th to the 18th April with my girlfriend for a short break to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and to celebrate my girlfriends birthday. After much searching for a nice hotel I went for the Headland as it looked nice, the reviews were favourable and the offer they had on appeared to be a great offer.
To start with if you are staying at the Headland you will have a very relaxing and comfortable stay. I emailed the Hotel before booking to ask a few questions and got a very swift response. I mentioned in my email that I was planning to propose to my girlfriend on her birthday and I believe it may have been that because I asked this question we were upgraded to a club room from a standard room free of charge when we arrived. To be honest at the time due to spending so much on the ring I couldn't afford the better room so to have the upgrade was brilliant and something I am very grateful for as we had a fantastic sea view and it was a perfect private moment for the occasion.
So onto the hotel. It is situated at the end of a quiet road with great views out to sea. A pebble beach is just a short walk away but is accessed via a hill so some people may struggle up and down. We walked into Torquay one day, which took around 15-20 mins at a relaxed pace, but again it is up and down a hill so take note if you have walking difficulties. The hotel building is clean and well presented, as is the room. There was the usual TV and tea/coffee in the room and a really nice table and chairs in the window to sit at and look out to the sea. The hotel is in an older style, not super modern but it has all of the amenities you will need, we like this style and its nice to get away from everything being gloss black or white in the modern world! The best thing about the hotel in my opinion though is the food. The standard was superb, both for breakfast and our evening meal. We were both extremely full after the evening meal and the food itself was top quality. The service was also to match with it being super efficient. We like to eat at a decent pace and the service suited us but if you want break between courses just ask and the staff are happy to oblige. There is a very inviting looking pool outside which we were tempted to use but the weather was a tad too cold. In summer this would be a great area to relax. The hotel does cater for a lot of older guests via coach trips, or it did when we were there, we were by far the youngest guests. We did like this though as it was a calm, adult atmosphere, just what we like and were after.
Overall an excellent stay and a place we will always remember and will definitely return in the future. I will have no doubts in recommending this hotel to friends and family.

This is a fabulous hotel with stunning views. We upgraded to a sea view room which was well worth the extra. The staff are all extremely friendly and work very hard to make your stay a pleasant one. The food is first class and we cannot fault it! The grounds of the hotel were immaculately kept. Just a few minor 'grumbles' - our room 161 was a large room with lovely views of the sea, however, it was in need of a little update especially the bathroom. The room provided a fixed hairdryer but it was nowhere near a mirror! We didn't find the bed too comfortable but I think that is just personal preference. The hotel in general was a little too warm as the weather was quite nice outside. Having said this, it didn't take anything away from our enjoyment and we would definately stay again. We understand that the hotel is gradually being refurbished, and where it has been, its lovely.

Room Tip: Upgade to a sea view or garden view room - well worth it.

Thank you for your valuable feedback, and we are very pleased you enjoyed your stay. Your bathroom, although fully serviceable, is indeed programmed for updating soon. Whilst the hairdryer is fixed, there is a fully portable desk top mirror for use between the dressing table and sideboard. I am sorry you did not find the bed comfortable, although we use top quality beds and matresses, but we would have been only too pleased to have sorted something for you, had you only mentioned it whilst here. We look forward to your next stay before too long.
