Situated only a short walk away from Kents Cavern, English Riviera's most beautiful coves (Meadfoot and Ansteys) and the famous South West Coastal Path we pride ourselves on the quality of service and quality of our ingredients.• Mild, subtle and delicate Flavours of India• Cookery Demo and Dinner Evenings• Imaginative Indian cocktail and Indian wines• 20% Discount Senior citizens card• 15% Discount Hospitality Card• Complimentary Birthday Package• Winter Warmer Menu• Live Music Evenings•LAVANI DIY Spice Packs & Marinades. Party Menu. We are delightful in many ways. While for some it is one of the finest speciality Indian restaurants, to others it is an amazing English Riviera retreat. And there are those that love it for its rose water and saffron marinated walls studded with themed art, red chilli flavoured chairs, buttermilk swish linen and its friendly family feel. Imaginative cuisine, undeniably happening ambience, the flavours, the aroma, the live cooking sounds and the artistic display, presented with the Lavani signature of hospitality. All come together in perfect harmony in an exciting new avatar! Our Cuisine: Careful blending of genuine Indian cooking traditions with high quality, high-end British high in protein, low in fat ingredients not often found in Indian cuisine such as scallops, wild boar, goat, lobster, mutton, wood pigeon, venison, caviar, quail, calf's liver, ostrich and more creates unique and distinct dishes. We take away the heaviness usually akin to Indian dishes and we're focusing on minimising the usage of oil and fat.The extremely comprehensive menu of dishes demonstrates how ancient wisdom and regional traditional cooking styles have been blended with British traditions evolving to become what we get on our plates today.Dig in! Be thrilled! Let the spirit of Lavani enliven you!

“Different and proud to be”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

It was made clear to us that Lavani prides itself on its seafood, and we were quite happy to oblige by ordering amongst other things, scallops, salmon and monkfish. 5 of us dined, and all agreed the salmon was fantastic. No one was disappointed, the pigeon breast starter was lovely, but the calf's liver was even better. Good to see an Indian restaurant make clear on the menu that its produce is local with its Devon lamb shank, pork loin etc.
The menu may seem expensive but most dishes include a combination of rice, potato and naan, which actually makes it cheaper than most of its competition.
We were served by the owner, who talked us through the menu and why he put certain dishes on there. If the rest of the staff are half as informative this place should do very well.
I would not hesitate in going back.

“Promised more than it delivered”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

Booked a table for 8 for our first visit here, on reading the menu we thought we were in for a treat, not your normal run of the mill indian, with mains at £15ish our espectations were high. Sorry to say they weren't met, service was extremely slow, table booked for 8pm, main course arrived at 10pm! menu does state that meals are cooked to order and will take 30 mins, but 2hrs? Food was OK and different from the norm but not exceptional. Service other than the sprred was very good and with a full house the atmosphere was good.
Will wait to see other positive feedback before going back agian.

“Pre Christmas Meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2012

First time at this resturant since its move from Paignton when it was called Cilantro. As ever the service was excellent with an envolved menu focusing on local produce and mild delicate flavours.

Well worth a visit, can't wait for a turn visit.

“Exceptional, authentic Indian food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2012

Having chanced upon Lavani on a trip to Torquay, we only wish it was considerably nearer to our home in Kent! This was, quite simply, the best South Indian food we have eaten outside Kerala, and we will certainly ensure we book a table for our next visit to Devon.

The quality and flavours of the food are outstanding; we particularly enjoyed the fish curries, and the Dosai are delicious starters, whilst the crispy okra was a revelation! Service is attentive and friendly, without being pushy, indeed it's exemplary: staff are keen to talk to customers about the food, ensuring it's right for you. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, a calm and relaxing place to spend a lovely evening. This is not a conventional British curry house; it's so much more in every way. Do go; you won't regret it!

“A Second Coming”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

Having previously given this place the thumbs down but hopeful for improvement, I tried it again. This time it was lunchtime and we were the only people there (my mother and I). It started badly. Having booked the table for 1200, the restaurant did not open until 1210 - it was very cold for a 90 year old outside and, if she could have moved quicker, we would have gone to the pub. The food was worth waiting for - absolutely delicious and much faster than last time (you would hope so with just two in the restaurant). It was good to have time to talk to the owner about the food and his ambitions. He says he has learned from feedback. It was a great food experience but I thought it was a bit odd that the lights weren't on - this makes it seem as though it is closed. I noticed the same thing passing that way today - the advertised 1200 opening happened at 1220 and although there were two people dining inside, no lights on so it looked closed. Hey ho.
