Owner description: Welcome to Living Coasts, an all weather attraction, located on Torquay seafront in South Devon, where there’s plenty to see and do: mingle with the playful penguins, get up close to the otters, octopus and seals, and much more. Visit Penguin Beach to walk with the African and macaroni penguins and catch our entertaining feeding time talks.

We would definitely recommend a visit to this Aquarium and Zoo. The penguins were lovely and to be so close to them was amazing. All of the displays were informative and it would really appeal to adults and children alike.

What could be better than seeing penguins within 2 feet of you. We visited while the weather was really hot and humid so the penguins sat under a water spray bath.

The staff seemed very knowledgable and friendly and offered information about the penguins without being asked. One of the poor penguins was covered in its fluffy fur from head to toe and seemed very unhappy about it.

The attraction itself isn't massive and you can walk round it in under an hour. We got our ticket when we went to Paignton zoo as an add on so we saved a little bit of money

Living Coasts is definitely the best place I have ever been to for Penguins, they have plenty of room and it feels more interactive than other places even though you of course don't touch them. I would recommend getting there when it opens, enjoying the peace and quiet while watching the penguins swim, then feeding time, before going on to see the rest. Once we had a thing that got us back in again later in the week, not sure if they still do that as we didn't need it last time but it does mean that if you wanted to see the other animals being fed you could pop back in so it was good value.

I love this attraction - I visit it every year. The staff are very knowledgable and friendly. The location is perfect, right on the coast, and the penguins and puffins are a delight to watch. There's also lovely otters, and a rather plump sea-lion, plus a host of other sea-birds. Didn't see many empty tanks, and the inside displays were very good.

I had to write a review for this place as I am so annoyed at the number of negative reviews posted and I don't think they accurately reflect this attraction. Love the review talking about badgers and sea lions - neither of which are even at this place???
Firstly, you need to plan your visit to make the most out of it. I recommend getting there for shortly after it opens at 10am, when you can park in the multi-storey car park right next door. From there its about 200 yards walk to the entrance and straight in. Also, if you plan to go, book online and if you are in the area for a while, go for the double Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts tickets - makes good value days out with the kids. The key to getting the most out of this is to hit the feeding times for each area. Penguins are normally fed at 10.30am, so start there. This is a great opportunity to see penguins up close and personal! You aren't allowed to actually touch them but you get as close as you are ever likely to and the keepers are fantastic - friendly and knowledgeable. They also encourage questions so its great for inquisitive children too. Next you walk to Auk Cliff - feeding time here is 11am so take your time with the penguins and wander on to make the most of it. Here you can see tufted puffins and other sea birds like guillemots and they get fed so you can see them diving down to get the fish if you are stood by the tanks at the time. We love puffins and it was so nice to see them in front of us feeding and they are quite cheeky characters! Again, the lady doing the feed and the talk was really friendly so we got to ask lots of questions. We then walked round to the wading birds and were amazed to read that they actually simulate the tide on this display - raising and lowering the water twice a day to mimic the tides. It was then on to the otters. This is a group of males - not been there long but their keeper clearly loves them and was only too happy to talk about them and what they do and what he is doing for enrichment (which is a lot). We then moved onto the fur seals and the feeding here was after the otters, so you can spend time in each area and wander around. Again, the keepers were very knowledgeable and the animals were great. From here you walk through a simulated mangrove swap with animal noises and displays - loved this it was really well done. You then are below the tanks and enclosures above ready to see the animals from a different perspective. You also see other animals from this area and move around to see octopus, lobster, seahorses, crabs etc. There are also things for the kids to do and colouring areas for them to work in. At the end you have to exit through the extensive gift shop but there is also a café that has outdoor seating. We had lunch outside and then went back into the zoo to go round all over again. We left just before 3pm, so had over 4 hours here. No, it isn't massive, but its what you make of it. The tanks are not dirty - yes - you don't always see something swimming past but that is only because the animals don't spend their whole time under the water - its not an aquarium! You could zip round in under an hour, but if you are out and wanting to learn, why would you do that? We also didn't find it dirty, which has been mentioned in a previous review. The staff were fantastic - all very friendly and because the place isn't huge, we felt we got to talk with the keepers more than we have at any other zoo we have been to. It was different and interesting and we loved it - thanks for a great day out.
