“Torquay's best A++++++”
Reviewed July 27, 2008

Having stayed in many hotels in Europe, the UK, Canada and the US we have to say that our experience at the Marstan in Torquay has yet to be beaten. Both Craig and Ian (the owners) and Tricia and Jean take care of your every need. Nothing is too much trouble. The room and the public areas were immaculate and opulent. We highly recommend a day beside the pool and in and out of the hot tub, where drinks of choice were served with speed and a smile. Since returning home we have not stopped talking about our fantastic experience there. We were made to feel like VIP's while at the same time like part of the family. We will be back!!!!!

Me,my wife and my 12 year old sister in law have just returned from a 5 night stay in the regal room at The Marstan.
The service and hospitality was second to none and the home cooked breakfasts were superb, with plenty of choice. We all particularly enjoyed the outdoor hot tub and swimming pool, since due to the small amount of guests the hotel caters for you get exclusive use at times.
The location was very good, however this hotel is very different from the 5 star hotels you would find on a city break in terms of decor.
Admittedly the owners have decorated and furnished the hotel in keeping with it being an old victorian house.Personally I would not rate the premises as a 5 star hotel, like the previous person who reviewed i would class it as a 3 or 4 star guest house, although the service was 5 star.
All in all a very enjoyable stay, our room was very big with a huge bed but i do not feel it was worth the 840 we paid for 2 adults and a child.
I would recommend this hotel for older couples, without a doubt and suggest that you stay in a standard room that would give better value for money.

We thank this guest for their positive review and kind comments, we very much enjoyed looking after them during their stay.

From this and the previous review we feel obligated to make the following comments in respect of our rating. We are not rated as a hotel but as a guesthouse and whilst we felt this is clear on our own website (and that of associated websites) with an accompanying explanatory note, we have now re-emphasised this.

Despite significant lobbying from the industry, the AA and Visit Britain chose to scrap the diamond rating system for small hotels and guesthouses and replace it with stars. We, amongst the majority of small hotel proprietors felt that this is potentially misleading as star ratings lead to people having expectations of formal hotel facilities such as 24 hour room service, mini bars, gyms etc. Despite these concerns it was imposed upon us. One positive aspect of the new ratings system is that it is more stringent and many establishments found that four or five diamonds translated to three or fours stars.

Fortunately we have only had one guest out of several thousand in the last three years that has felt strongly misled and I think much of that lies in a failure to properly read our website before booking. We would never knowingly try to mislead anyone into believing that we are a five-star hotel.

All of the establishments (the top eight) including ourselves are listed as hotels on the front page of tripadvisor as of 21st July 2008 but rated under the guesthouse scheme (with one exception that is not rated by choice).

The emphasis of the rating of a guesthouse is not to do with facilities but with regards to service and quality of public areas and bedrooms – all of which have been refurbished within the last 2 years to a high standard with new beds, decor etc. All but two en-suite bathrooms have been completely gutted and replaced, the other two improved, quite a significant investment and we continue to invest and improve our property.

Understandably in our marketing we emphasise the fact we have five stars as we are one of only three in Torquay currently to reach this extremely high standard and it is something we think to be proud of.

Thank you for taking the time to read this response and once again we thank this reviewer for their positive comments and for raising a pertinent point.

What a thoroughly enjoyable weekend!

When we arrived at the Marstan after a lengthy drive we were greeted by Ian, offered a cup of tea and then taken through to the beautiful lounge complete with grand piano. We were then shown to our en-suite room which was a very good size, well furnished and absolutely spotless.
The rest of the hotel was lovely and had a very relaxed feel to it, there was also a very nice garden complete with pool.

When it came to dinner time there was a selection of menus available for local restaurants and as Ian and Craig had eaten in many of the establishments themselves they were able to give excellent advice on where to go.

In the morning we got up and went down to the very large dining room where Ian greeted us again and took our order. The home cooked breakfast that then arrived a few moments later was absolutely delicious and set us up nicely for a day of walking by the sea and taking in the sights.

The location is ideal as it is near to the coast which has some stunning views and lovely walks. It is also just a stones throw from the harbour which looks amazing at night and has some wonderful places to eat.

The service at the Marstan was excellent, Ian and Craig were very friendly, welcoming and only too happy to help.

In summary we had a lovely relaxing break and would recommend the Marstan Hotel to anyone, it is great value for money and you certainly wont be disappointed.

As we were looking for a honeymoon destination with some class and culture aswell as good restaurants closeby we came across the Marston Hotel and couldnt have asked for more!!

Ian and Craig (the owners) were the ideal hosts presenting a really freindly atmosphere not like the "stuck behind a desk" types at some hotels

Craig gave us some fantastic recommendations for restaurants of which they will happily contact and book and great places to visit.

We were both overwhelmed by the upgraded room compliments of the hotel and having a champagne jacuzzi is a must for everyone staying!

The decor is ideal for the age of the hotel with some very nice artwork and tasteful furnishings, the rooms are decorated inline with the rest of the hotel with solid wood cupboards and draws and nice relaxing chairs

We were warmly greeted at breakfast and offered a selection of menu breakfasts,tea/coffee and toast aswell as an array of cereals, fruits, homemade yoghurt and preserves.

We could not have asked for a better stay and a perfect honeymoon, Ian and Craig we both thankyou and look foward to our stay next year.

My husband and I took my parents to Torquay to celebrate their wedding anniversary in April and we stayed at the Marstan for 2 nights. The welcome we received from Ian and Craig (the owners) on our arrival set the standard of service for our entire stay. We were made to feel very special - a refreshing cup of tea served in the lounge, before being shown to our rooms. My parents were able to stay on the ground floor as they have difficulty negociating stairs. Both rooms were spacious, well-equipped, tastefully decorated, sparklingly clean and extremely comfortable. Ian and Craig were able to recommend excellent restaurants throughout our stay and were full of useful local knowledge to make our time there even more enjoyable. One word of warning -the breakfasts are excellent! I particularly enjoyed Craig's homemade grenola and my Mother, who normally only nibbles a small piece of toast, tucked into a nearly full English breakfast on both mornings - even asking for an extra sausage on day 2!
To finish off their stay my parents were spoilt with a piano recital as they waited for us to complete the packing. They were thrilled and are still talking about their wonderful second honeymoon. We had no complaints whatsoever and would go back tomorrow.

From the moment we walked through the door we were impressed by the warm welcome from the owners of this hotel. After a long journey it was lovely to be greeted with such friendliness. Nothing was too much trouble and the owners' local knowledge really added to the holiday.
Our room was very impressive, spacious, very comfortable and tastefully furnished and above all immaculately clean. The breakfast was first class and again the staff were wonderful. It was really useful to be able to park off-road and really near to the hotel entrance.
This is an excellent hotel and it really lives up to its web-site specification. We look forward to our return to the Marstan Hotel.

We stayed here weekend of 27th October 2007, we were greeted by Craig who was excellent, extremely friendly with helpful knowlegde and tips on local attractions and a good guide on the best local restaurants, we took up their recommendations and found an excellent Indian. Breakfast was excellent and it was clear that alot of thought and effort had been put into the menu, the sausages were to die for !!
Very clean, extremely comfortable beds set in a very attractive period building. Top Notch

Overall an excellent stay, wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
