“quality Hotel, ticked all the boxes, can't say more than that!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2011

We had the good fortune to stay at this hotel, only for 1 night but in my opinion this is one of the nicest, friendliest hotels we have stayed in over last few years. We used a groupon voucher so had one of the rooms on the top floor. We knew that it wouldn't be one of their better rooms, but it was a pleasant surprise to find it was very comfortable and pleasant. Very large double bed and views of the sea from the bedroom and bathrrom windows. Decor was stylish and modern. We had a large ensuite bathroom with overhead shower that had strong water pressure and simple controls. Because we were in the eaves you do have to watch you don't bang your head on the beams.
This is a quirky unusual building, furnished in a 30's style. Upon arrival we were met by a very friendly receptionist who was very helpful, that set the consistent tone throughout our stay with all the staff we encountered. This was a genuine unforced freindliness with excellent service. We were told that the hotel had been under new ownership for 9 weeks by a family who have many years of experience in catering and hospitality......it showed!!
The chef has previously worked at the local well regarded Elephant Restaurant and also at the prestigious Gidleigh Park Hotel. We hadn't intended to eat in but once we saw the evening menu we quickly cancelled we where going to eat. We were not let down the belly pork was fantastic. They have a fantastic 'conservatory' restaurant and a terrace for dining al fresco on warmer nights both have views of the sea.
We have had mixed fortunes over the last 12 months with some of the hotels we have stayed in, but this was of a higher standard than its 3 star rating and should be a 4 star. As with any pace you stay you have to ask if you would return.....I would definately return and would loom forward to eating there. This wonderful Hotel gest a strong recomendation from me

We were delighted with this hotel from the moment we arrived. We stayed in a spacious superior room with great sea views, a fabulous bathroom with clawfoot bath, and a separate sitting area with a welcome tea-tray all laid out, all tastefully decorated and very comfortable. The service from all staff was exemplary and attentive throughout our stay. Breakfast was excellent - highly recommend the Eggs Benedict muffin (with delicious Wiltshire ham) - and our evening meal was simply superb - gorgeous crab tortellini followed by perfectly cooked duck breast, and tempting petit fours with coffee (couldn't manage the lovely sounding desserts or cheese platter we saw other diners enjoy).
We took the opportunity to view other rooms as we certainly plan to return, and the suites and superior rooms all look fabulous (didn't have a chance to view their 'standard' rooms which we understand are inevitably smaller). The whole hotel has a wonderful welcoming feel and with inviting lounges, open fireplace and great conservatory/sunroom enjoying views over the gardens and sea it was a perfect place to stay. Thank you, we will definitely be back.

Room Tip: The superior rooms and suites all looked fabulous. We stayed in room 7 , a quirky under the eaves r...

charming 11 bedroom hotel, good local food, really nice staff and comfortably elegant. Has a great feel about it and love the Lloyd Loom look with stripped wood floors and comfortable sofas. We have looked for a long time for a good place to stay in this area and now we have it. Good luck to the new owners, it's a lovely property.

Staff really are faultless here, from swopping rooms to accommodate us to going out and picking fresh spearmint in the dark for nightcap nothing seemed too much trouble. The hotel is charming, lovely rooms with quirky touches in a great location. The standard of food served in the restaurant was great we all enjoyed our meals and couldn't resist tasting each others as all looked so good, don't overlook the cauliflower soup if on the menu it was delicious and the local cheeses a great end to the meal. The only negatives we had were minor, water pressure in our stunning bathroom was low so didn't real get power shower and loo took ages for the cistern to fill.

Room Tip: All rooms looked good but the larger rooms on first floor stunning, we had lovely twin with huge bat...

Thank you for your review. I am so pleased you had a great time and what we were/ are trying to achieve shone through. We took over the hotel in july and hit the ground running to get alot of maintainance and improvements underway. At this point in september there was still alot to do but the mattresses had all been replaced as well as a good old fashioned deep clean everywhere. We have achieved much since including a new Bistro dinning area and menus new carpets in most rooms and taps in all. I noticed your comment about the shower which is now running well, the toilet cistern is quiet and the bath fills quickly. There is a room beneath but should point out it is relatively small so there is never musical entertainment held there only business meetings or private dinning. The room is only used occasionally.
I hope you return and experience even more improvements.

We stayed at this hotel using a Groupon offer and thought it was an interesting hotel with lots of quirky ornaments and furniture. Our room was up in the eaves and we could glimpse the sea in the distance. I am tall so kept having to duck down under the beams to get into my side of the bed but that's fine for one night. There was no lift so I'm glad I'm fit or I would have been struggling to climb all the stairs. The staff were friendly and helpful and I really enjoyed my breakfast in the relaxing dining room. I liked the toiletries in the bathroom and the towels were nice and fluffy. The bathroom had a few areas that needed attention, like chipped paintwork. However, I think they must be in the process of refurbishing as there was a loaded skip in the car park, "rubbing shoulders" with a couple of extremely expensive cars . The skip did not make a good impression when we first arrived. I would recommend a stay here but only if you are going with a special offer, such as Groupon.

Room Tip: If you are unfit or have mobility problems ask for a room on the lower floors.

We were looking for a nice break away where the service would be good and the room would be comfortable. This is exactly what we got. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the staff of the hotel, who I understand only took the hotel over a few weeks ago!

We had a meal on the 'Fish night' and although the fish was good, I felt there was an excessive use of butter in the sauce. It did look great though and breakfast was ample and tasty too!
