“First and last visit!”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

Having driven past the Livermead Cliff hotel I thought it worthy of a try when visiting Torquay next. It is situated right on the cliff and overlooking the Bay it has good parking and access it is seemingly ideal - Sadly it all ends there as you walk through the door! Staff in fairness are very good and clearly have to work with what they have got. The whole building interior is very dated and generally tired and worn out. Decor and furnishings are sad as was the room and common areas.
I booked a sea view room at £150 per night and was seriously unimpressed. In terms of size it is very good, likewise the stunning view accross the bay. The interior is something else! Ceiling paper peeling away and not just in one small area, the TV is a PC Monitor size and needs to be sat next to before it can be watched, the carpets are wrinkled, wall colours do not match the soft furnishings, Electrical appliances are powered via multi a socket, there is no light-pull in the bathroom, light fittings have ugly 'coiled tube' type power saver light bulbs hanging out of them rather that the more modern and sypathetically designed candle type power savers. One lamp had nothing at all with just a bare socket!
Whilst I cannot speak for other rooms, our room had a low window shelf with windows that have no restriction and open out completely creating a fall risk especially for young people. Overall it was as sad as the rest of the establishment and certainly not worth £150 per night.
Elsewhere fire call points have been upgraded but instead of removing the old ones they have been taped over and painted to match the walls. The lift is very old and small - nothing wrong in essence, but the gates are the old concertina type that are hard to use if elderly or weak due to the strong springs and present a hazard for trapping fingers. The bar Area has padding around the bar itself in leatherette, this is worn, damaged and looks awful. Breakfast was OK but the tables are adorned with plasic Carnation style pinks that are very reminicent of those given away with soap packets 40 years ago (OK yes hands up I do remember them!) and the old stainless steel tea and coffee pots were badly marked/stained and fit for the bin. However very worryingly, I asked for the door adjacent to our table to be opened as it was quite stuffy at breakfast. Looking out through the door was a white mains cable running along the floor terminating from an electrical box, this was unsecured and un protected - now I am looking at cables instead of my breakfast! standard domestic type cables have been run into Air conditioning units and fixed to conduits and pipes via cable ties and just adjacent to the door the plastic conduit running the power to the emergency exit light had broken off of the wall in a number of places causing the joints to break (including into the light fitting itself) exposing the cable and the whole lot to water ingress. Needless to say I asked to see the manager and pointed this out. This establishment is in serious need of refurbishment and not just simply a facelift - it is well beyond its sell by date in that respect and it certainly is in urgent need of a health and safety check to ensure there are no other hidden disasters waiting to happen - so concerned, I have taken images and will be forwarding them.
The Manager was attentive and took on board my comments, yes he kindly gave a reduction in my bill, but it is not about that, guests should not be given reason to raise concerns, especially at this level - it is also not good for business to give refunds for poor service or facilities.

Pay attention Best Western Group, It is not all about P&Ls, your Staff and Guests deserve much better than this - it is a disgrace.

I would not recommend this hotel nor ever return unless the very dated 1980's style bedrooms are fully refurbished and bedroom cleanliness improves dramatically.
The beds need modern duvets not old scratchy blankets. The avocado green bathroom suite and mouldy walls and buckled tiles need instant address.
The Hotel sea view and external terrace are its best features BUT do not be fooled by its own website customer praise comments.
The restaurant food was mixed from good to bad, I think they recycle left over food to the next day making roast potatoes and reheated pork inedible. Over cooked fish is not at the height of my menu choice either.
Staff appear nice and helpful.

We stayed as a group of 25 on Half board. Every one of us were most impressed not only with the very helpful staff but with all the facilities. As in all buildings room sizes vary but on the whole they are all of a good size and spotlessly clean. Our own room had an amazing views over the bay as did most of our group. The food was of a high standard with more than most of us could manage on most sitings. As with most hotels in UK the bar prices are on the high side I dont understand those who thought it the building is in need of an upgrade. I found nothing to be shabby or rundown. In fact the outside area overlooking he bay in brand new and a lovely spot to spend the early evening. We shall be back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view.

Stayed overnight at the Livermead Best Western in Torquay. Reception staff were polite and helpful. Booked a single room. I must say that this is probably the lowest standard of room I have encountered at such a chain Hotel. Room was very tired and sad looking. Only mod con was the mini flat screen tv, the rest definitely needs throwing out and starting again. Located about 20 minutes walk from the centre with a lovely beach and views. I rate it highly as average purely on the staff making a good impression with their attention, otherwise the hotel would have received a lowly one or two scoring. With its location and potential, Best Western certainly need to up their game on this as it could otherwise be a lovely place to stay.

Concur totally with everything that has been stated in the previous reviews. Sadly it spoilt a weekend away.
Having stayed with Best Western Hotels globally, this hotel must be low on their radar. As it is not the standard that BW praises itself with.
The room we stayed in was small, hot. The bed was a small double with a sprung mattress with wayward springs! blankets on the bed that smelt, small towels and depressing decor!
Room service was used on our arrival, to find a prawn sandwich with a good 1/4" of butter spread on the bread, which made you gag at the first bite. A salmon & cottage cheese sandwich with the same preparation. Which resulted in sour stomachs all night and during the following day.
The phrase, Supplimental Charge seems to figure with anything to service within the hotel.
Dinner was £29.00 pp with steak on the menu. When requested, this was a further £15.00 Supplimental charge. When challenged the staff informed us, that it was due to the menu being "a la carte". While you could buy the same steak in the bar for £14.50.
When the food arrived it was on cold plates and the food bearly warm, with the waitress telling us to mind the plates as they are very hot. No apology or the suggestion to reheat the meal.
Bottom line, for the money they are charging and the competition that's out there, you would be better off staying at a Premier Inn, the standard, cost far outweighs this hotel.

I had the displeasure of staying in this hotel for 1 night. This was 1 night too many. The room was extremely small therefore very hot, you couldn't have the windows open because it is situated on a noisy busy main road. The room wasnt very clean and smelt, the furniture was damaged and dirty, there were stains on the carpet and electrical appliance wires held together with tape. The food was nothing special with the staff not really very attentive. Several items on the limited menu were not available. Offered drinks at the beginning of meal but not asked again. The bottle of wine we ordered was opened and poured, wasn't asked if we would like to try it. Not once were we asked if everything was ok.

Stayed 2 nights in July 2013 in standard (not sea view) double room. This hotel has many attractive features such as lovely sea views but many rooms are uncomfortable to sleep in. Poor value for three figure rates.

The hotel is situated 20 minute walk from the centre of Torquay's main tourist area. Has lovely views out over the sea with good views visible from the bar area and terrace seating. Free on-site parking. Easy access directly to a small public beach.

The hotel décor is very dated although it has been kept quite clean. Hotel floors are connected by a very small old fashioned lift which has the old style inner and outer doors. The rooms we stayed in varied considerably in size with other in our group. Beds were lumpy and sagged in the middle.. The room was small and very hot & stuffy. Even with the windows open there was little or no breeze as the room faced other buildings. Open windows meant sleep was interrupted even more by noise from screeching sea gulls (all night) and traffic from nearby main road. No fan available on first night. The hotel should ensure all rooms have a good size, high powered fan for use in the summer months. Bathroom small, with very average water pressure from the shower. Exhaust fan was not working.

Dining facilities include breakfast which was acceptable. Evening meal in restaurant was available although we did not try this. Bar available with decent range of food served in good sized portions. Live entertainment was present on one evening. Staff were polite and friendly.

Overall, would not stay here again unless paying considerably less.

Room Tip: Consider sea view room in summer months as they will probably have a better breeze. Try to avoid roo...
