We had a lovely room at the Royal, overlooking the beach at the front of the hotel. The view was fabulous and the room was excellent, of a really high standard and really loved the new looking bathroom with a nice walk in shower. The staff were friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed our stay. We would definitely stay here again next time we visit Devon.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the front overlooking the sea.

Me and my family had a very enjoyable meal at the Royal on Sunday The waitresses were friendly and the food was good and well cooked. But there is a downside. We were told there were two serving options. 1. order the food and drinks and pay at the bar to obtain your carvery ticket then get your own food. The same applied if you wanted desserts, although after ordering and paying they did bring the desserts to your table. Option 2. If you want waitress service, have your order taken and served and pay after your meal, then you had to GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD TO HOLD. Why don't trust their customers to order a meal, have waitress service, then pay, as other restaurants do. We felt distrusted and this spoilt our meal. How many people would want to give a stranger their credit card to hold? The food was good the venue was lovely as was the view of the sea.

Hello and thank you for your feedback.
We are glad that you enjoyed your meal with us last Sunday but sorry to hear that you felt distrusted. I can assure you that this is not in any way our intention. The policy of holding customers cards behind the bar is relatively common these days but is very new to us. Introduced recently after issues with customers leaving without paying on Sundays when we are very busy we will review this policy further to your comments. I can assure you that there is no personal mistrust of any customers and regret that the dishonesty of the few has affected anyone's enjoyment of dining with us.
We hope this will not deter you from eating with us again.
Kind Regards

On holiday in the area and looking for a carvery. Quick search on the internet, and it showed us the Royal. We called in without booking, and just timed things right.
Right from the start we were treated very pleasantly, ordered our drinks, and got our carvery!
Good choice of meats, that also tasted good, and with all the veg you expect these days. Can't complain at all about the whole evening we had there.
Thanks very much, well done.
Will use this again.

Room Tip: We only used the restaurant

Genuinely really surprised when we went in our room! I did expect tired and old fashioned hotel rooms but I was very wrong. The room was huge, the bed was queen sized, the decoration was modern and spotless. I couldn't fault it and I look forward to coming back. We also had breakfast here and there was plenty of food. We we offered cereal and a full English breakfast with lots of toast too. We travelled with our 3 year old daughter and they set her up a camp bed in our room and breakfast was free for her (cereal and toast!) couldn't be happier with the service and the bedrooms.

Room Tip: Room 8 is huge and has sea views

We spent one night here as a break en route home from Cornwall.
The staff were friendly and efficient. Room 5 was large, well equipped and very clean and the bed was really comfortable - with decent pillows too! The blackout curtains made for a good nights sleep. It would have been nice to have had separate bedside lights, rather than having to have both either on or off.
The view was beautiful and despite sleeping with the window open, we were not disturbed by noise. The only downside was the people smoking by the front porch, which was directly below our window. This did rather spoil our pleasure when sitting by the open window, admiring the view.
However, we would certainly use this hotel again, hopefully for a longer break.
