“Third Time At The Grand!!”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

This is our third time staying at the Grand in a sea facing family room. The room was lovely and clean comfortable beds, would have been nice if we had proper duvets instead of blankets but that was not a major issue. The staff are very polite and could not be more helpfull, breakfast also lovely. We swam every day the indoor pool, jacuzzi and the sauna very nice as well as the outdoor heated pool. The changing rooms could be a little cleaner though and cleaned more often (e.g: 2-3 times aday). A few moans though: I think the hotel needs updating. Some parts of the frond floor is tired and worn and need money spent on it. Also some of the rooms need to be more modern. The parking is a big issue as well. There is nearly never a parking space and the capacity of guests the hotel will hold there is no were near enough parking spaces. From previous stays the food is not as good and there needs to be more variety on the compass bar menu. Overall the hotel holds a very good position looking over Torquay but the hotel just need a little more attention to detail and some money spent on it.

We stayed for a long weekend. The hotel is clean and presentable downstairs. The rooms also clean, but in need of modernising (decor dated and old fashion box style tv's)
We were comfortable in our room, but they could have made it so much nicer if they changed curtains/linen/tv/lights/bathroom tiles etc. saying that, we would stay again as the positioning of the hotel was good and the breakfast nice and staff polite and attentive.

Room Tip: We had a sea view and the road was pretty noisy but we were tied out at the end of the days so even...

Stayed in a sea facing double room for two nights on B&B.
Firstly the good points:
- reception and bar area which have been refurbished are nice
- you get free parking outside
- the outdoor heated pool was really good.
However, I'd never stay there again because of:
- our room (112) was very dated. Bathroom fittings probably 20-30 years out of date. Window almost impossible to see out as it had probably not been cleaned all year.
- biggest issue was the bed. I have never stopped in the last few years in any UK hotel that does not use a quilt but uses old fashioned blankets. Had a terrible nights sleep with it.
- Breakfast food and style again not what you'd expect of a modern hotel - might be fine for some pensioners I guess.
- The hotel is a mile away form Torquay centre. For many this would be a big issue as it is a good 20 minute walk to the marina.
Finally, it would have been nice on checkout of the staff had bothered to ask if we'd had a nice stay and if there were any issues. Instead I have to raise them here on TripAdvisor.

me and my family are from the midlands, me and my husband got married in this hotel august 2011! as it was ana amazing hotel, gorgeous food, very helpful, kind and polite staff, they couldnt of done enough for us all! the reception of the hotel is amazing, the restaurants and bar area are lovely, the only down side is the bedrooms are very old fashionedand could really do with updating to match the rest of the hotel! but all the rooms we stayed in have been very clean and very comfortable, have stayed here 2 weeks ago for our 1st wedding anniversary, and will always go back every now and then.

Room Tip: room 3 i think it was, was a lovely family room, and suite 100 was lovely.

Came for a wedding reception and we had been drinking all afternoon in the outside area.. We came inside for the reception and with it being a Sunday and having work the next day decided to go for a soft drink.. To our astonishment the bar guy followed me back to the table from the bar and said to my husband 'you cannot bring your own drinks in here' I was discusted as I had jus purchased drinks from him.. The hotel was old looking inside and I saw plenty of dust around and the curtains needed updating.. I cannot comment on the rooms in this hotel..

As we live nearby we have not stayed overnight here but would be tempted if we lived further afield.
The restaurant areas are lovely with great views out to sea and over the pool and gardens.
My main reason for writing the review is the great lunch we had here a few weeks ago. It was cooked to perfection and of an exceptional standard. I was with 2 others and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. It was also very reasonalbly priced.
The service was very friendly and professional. The tables were laid up beautifully.
All the main areas are welcoming and well maintained.
We did ask to see some rooms as my friend's parents may want to stay. The staff were extremely helpful and we saw some lovely rooms which seemed like very good value.
It is also very convenient for the train station which is a few hundred yards across the road.
We will defintiely be visiting again.

The Grand Hotel Torquay
Stayed here for 3 nights August 2012.

Positives:
- Speedy early check in.
- Right on the seafront.
- Bedroom 326 has a partial seaview which is good as we did not pay for a seaview room.
- Main parts of the room were clean.
- Good quality hospitality tray.
- Outdoor pool is heated.
- Good breakfast selection, replinshed often.
- Nice bar area overlooking the seafront.
- Modern foyer and reception area.
- Friendly helpful staff in all areas especially the porter.
- Good location for the station.

Negatives:
- Parking is a major issue at this hotel. We arrived long before check in time of 3pm and there were no spaces in the garage and there are only 26 across at the station. Even when we waited for a free space at the station, these are not ideal for wheeling/ carrying heavy bags as there is a piece of overgrown grass blocking your way.
We noticed quite a few guests complaining/ asking about parking during our stay. As a result we used public transport and taxis beside walking for fear of losing our space.
- If you struggle with walking and like us dont want to move your car/ pay for parking you are at the hotels mercy for food and drink - they are clearly aware of this judging by the prices.
We are in our 20s and fully fit and able and it took us a good 20 minutes to walk to the harbour where most other eateries are to be found which isnt bad in the nice weather but cant get a bit boring when you have to go to and fro a few times a day.
- It is not made clear where to get pool towels from as there is no reception down at the pool and we noticed other guests confused as well as ourselves during our stay. Other guests struggled to open the coded door and I had to open the door a few times for them.
- General signage in the hotel is lacking or unclear. For example- how do you get to the outside pool? What time is breakfast (in the lift it says conflicting times to what is written in the information in your room) and on one day when we looked at the menu for the evening there was a list of starters and mains written out twice and no list of desserts.
- Although we did not eat in the restaurant the menu looked a bit repetative (there was always "curried" something as a starter).
- There was always a queue at reception no matter what time you went. There are 2 reception booths and 1 concierge which never has anyone in it acting as a concierge.
- I had ordered chocolate dipped strawberries which after 2-3 hours of checking in still had not arrived and I had to go and chase them up myself.
- There is no one controlling what happens in the pool areas, there were unruly children and ball games being played indoors which chased some swimmers off. Bare in mind that both the pool and gym do get busy and so swimming is not always possible.
- Breakfast is busy around 9 am and each morning we were told to find ourselves a seat- this is no problem however you then have to wait until a waitress notices you to take your drink/ toast order. One day we waited 10 minutes for our order to be taken, then waited ages for it to arrive and my brown toast was white not brown.
- There are stains on lampshades and cobwebs on ceilings here and there.
- We had a bad experience with the taxi company the hotel uses (292-292) as the hotel told us a trip to Babbacombe would cost circa £5 however it cost us more like £10 as the driver took us inland and around the houses rather than going the direct route. We also witnessed one of their drivers getting into a physical and verbal fight with someone delivering something to the hotel. Not a good impression.
- No internet access not even available to pay for.
- Service also takes ages in the bar area where drinks are pricey.
- The outdoor pool was heated on one day and the next it was stone cold.
- Changing areas smelt very badly.
- Only one treadmill was working in the very small gym area.

Room Tip: 326 is an inland room with a partial sea view across the bay with a wall of bay windows.
