Owner description: Since its foundation in 1196, Torre Abbey has witnessed, survived and even played a role in some epic moments of history. It is one of the best buildings in the country to tell the story of 800 years of Catholicism between 1196 and 1930. This museum uses a clever mix of authentic artefacts with hi-tech interpretation. From talking portraits and statues to interactive displays and one of the largest fine art collections in the South West, there really is something for everyone. Follow the garden trails or pick up a family guide or Experts' Choice to discover many hidden mysteries. With a wealth of exotic plants, the gardens are a tranquil haven of beauty and pleasure and the perfect setting in which to relax, stroll or picnic. Children can explore the garden and bring the Abbey to life using our special discovery backpacks. Browse our shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books or sit down and enjoy a selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearooms. The house, Spanish Barn and Palm House are licensed for civil weddings, partnership ceremonies and christenings. Torre Abbey can also cater for functions, corporate hospitality or training events. A varied programme of events takes place at Torre Abbey throughout the year. Tours of the house are available out of hours to groups of 30 or more. Following the recent restoration project, the Abbey now boasts a new educational suite which provides opportunities for students of all ages to get involved and explore the Abbey's history.

“A hidden gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2014

Positioned well back from the front, you could easily miss Torre Abbey, but you'd miss out, if you do! It's an extremely interesting place, from the buildings and art, to the gardens and palm house. We spent 3 excellent hours wondering around. So glad we bought the return pass and they added a couple of months extra to the year's pass, as they are closed Jan/Feb.

A hidden gem and no mistake.

“Poor gardens”

We just did the gardens and I was really disappointed. The floral arrangements at Babbacombe Model Village was far better.

“Experience Torbay's history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Torre Abbey with our young grandson. He followed the children's Mouse Trail and was interested in everything he saw. The interactive displays were very popular and the art gallery was very interesting too. We enjoyed picking out local landmarks in the pictures and then seeing them i. real life later in the day. The gardens and abbey ruins, together with the games provided, were all good fun. The greenhouse was also very interesting. We took a peek in the Spanish Barn on the way out and saw it prepared for a wedding later the day - it was truly beautiful.

Whether you live in Torbay or are here on holiday, this is a must. If you have a family, there us an excellent free, full-colour guide for children.

We will renew our annual ticket when it expires and come back for more!

“Short walk from our hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2014

Lovely grounds and a great place to walk dogs. There is a gorilla there -part of the gorilla project in the local area. Sadly we didnt have time to visit the Abbey itself, but had an enjoyable early morning walk with the dogs

“Outstanding attraction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2014

Spent an absorbing couple of hours at the Abbey yesterday, accompanied by my Torquay-resident brother. Funding by the Lottery has enabled the creation of a hugely impressive interactive exhibition of 800 years of history, bringing to life the events that determined the abbey's long lineage. The art galleries, Carey dining room, lovely Carey chapel, abbey ruins and beautiful gardens add to a truly memorable experience, all assisted by friendly and helpful staff (including one from my own home city of Cape Town!). Even the worst efforts of the dastardly Henry VIII could not obliterate this gem. All quite outstanding.
