very helpful staff and nice cosy place inside with interesting decor. Food was good but I have to say it was not as 'special' as we expected - 3 of us had fish and chips - lovely batter and nice fish but not really blown away by the chips - sorry but Harry Ramsdens chips are better. A bit overpriced for what we had.

Thank you for your generally positive review. However, I'm sorry you didn't rate our chips. We cook our chips in pure vegetable oil in a one cook process. Many establishments, particularly northern England and Scottish, cook in dripping (animal fat) and cook the chips twice in oil to get a crispier finish. Unfortunately by cooking this way you introduce twice the amount of fat to the chips. We have done this before in the past and got a resounding 'no' from our regular customers who prefer a drier chip cooked in vegetable oil. With regards to price, yes, we certainly are dearer than a supermarket canteen or smaller, average chippy restaurant. But we consider we are considerably cheaper than the pubs and good restaurants that we are in competition with in terms of quality and service. I assure you, any cheaper and we would have to close our restaurant. Fortunately we are very busy every night.

We turned up for lunch without a booking and it was relatively quiet. The staff were very friendly and the food turned up fairly quickly despite a notice syaing it could take up to 20 minutes. The fish was very fresh and the batter was clean and crisp. The chips on initial appearances looked dry but when tasted were also very nice. We took a one year old and a 4 year old and they were very accommodating to both. If we ever find ourselves in that part of the world again would definitely pop in for some more.

We ate here twice, once takeaway and once sitting in. As far as the takeaway went the fish was lovely and the batter was beautifully crisp and thin but I thought my fish was a little over-cooked and the portions of chips were very small (we ordered a medium between 2) but were of great quality. Also you get a cardboard box to take away and this jeeps the batter crisp for longer.

When we ate in we ordered the special medium cod with chips lunch special at £8.95 which I though was excellent value and the fish and chips were perfectly cooked this time and the portion size was just right. The mushy peas and beans were relatively expensive as extras and the portions of these were rather small.

The restarant is nicely decorated on a nautical theme if you have kids and the waitresses were very friendly and helpful
