“A full Torquay fish package”
Reviewed July 21, 2014

Picture yourself sitting on a terrasse, catching the last rays from the sun as it sets behind the harbour, overlooking both harbour and all the people pasning by, and getting pampered with the catch of the day by a very attentative and welcoming waitress. Just such was our evening in Man Fridays Lobsterhouse: well-balanced fishcakes, lovely moules, delicate hake, creme brulee and chocolate cake with ice - washed down with an excellent Mud House white. Greatly recommended!

“Best Fish Restaurant !”
Reviewed July 16, 2014

My boyfriend and I visited Man Fridays after a weekend in Torquay and were thoroughly pleased. The waitresses went above and beyond and were very friendly and welcoming. The whole place had a great atmosphere. Food was fantastic: nice selection of local fish cooked to perfection; the lemon sole in citrus butter was divine. I also had a rather devilish white chocolate cheesecake. The homemade bread and olives on arrival was a lovely touch and was delicious. Thank you for a lovely evening - it really made our holiday. I would just like to add there was a rude lady complaining rather loudly when we were there and it was quite unnecessary - the waitress dealt with it very well !

“So close But !!”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

Before going to Torquay for a long weekend, I did what we all do and that that was to check in here to see what was good and what was not. This restaurant had excellent ratings and only a few concerns with service but on the whole looked the best Torquay had to offer. We booked the table a week in advance requesting a table by the window (there is only one!) which we were given on arrival. We had checked out the location and the menu the night before so we both knew exactly what we wanted, Scallops for starter and Lobster for the main course and were looking forward to a special meal. The bill came to nearly £120 including a single bottle of wine. It was a Saturday night and the first sitting was full, we arrived at 7:10pm when the restaurant was just starting to fill up. The view is fantastic, looking across the harbour, watching the sun go down. But if you do get the window seat, be warned there is very little shade and you do bake under the glass. Secondly the restaurant is on top of a noisy bar and frequently has large groups trying to gain entrance and on a number of occasions became very vocal and abusive which does alter the ambiance.
The food was as everyone else has said excellent, the only problem was getting it! We were sat in that restaurant for over 3 & 1/2 hours for a 3 course meal, when we enquired if there was a problem we were informed that they were very busy and the second time there was a problem with the oven. Obviously only our oven, because there were people around us who arrived after us and had been served the same as we had ordered. We were not the only ones to suffer, we saw at least 2 other tables who had excessive times for being served, one was there for 2 & 1/2 hours for a single course! Another table had one of its occupants fall asleep! The whole serving method was chaotic at best, with no structure or organisation. The 3 members of staff crossed over tables and attended to what was in front of them. On at least 3 occasions the waitress said she would be straight there when we did manage to catch her eye and went off to get her pen and pad, she was distracted and never came back. After nearly an hour later we finally had our order taken and it was another 30minutes before the starter arrived. The bread they bake is very nice but we even had to ask for that which arrived just before the starter course. To be honest it felt like they ignored us by the window as it was the furthest point and as time went on they sensed that we were becoming unhappy and tried to avoid us. By the time it got to desert we were the only one left from the first sitting and some of the items had run out! Even at that point the desert menu was held up in front of us, with my wife struggling to see without her glasses, the waitress just said “can’t you read the hand writing ! “ There was no attempt to sell the items no description, it all appeared a hassle for her! I had to read it out in the end. Then the bill, the only person left serving came to reset the table next but one to ours, we tried to attract his attention, even speaking loudly (but politely), but each time he would walk off to get items to set the table. The person on the next table very kindly had to shout him over as they were getting embarrassed in the middle. I had my card out ready to pay when he returned with the bill which he placed on the table and walked off, in the end I had to take the bill up to the bar to pay. At the bar, there was the chef and two members of the serving staff, I did point out how unhappy I had become, the waitress again tried to make an excuse about the oven but could not answer why others had the same before us, the chef said she would look at the ticket. The only response I had was “well would you like a complimentary drink” after now approaching 4 hours all I wanted was to go back to my hotel not spend another indiscriminate time waiting for a drink. After collecting my coat and wife from the table we made our way to the exit passing the bar where the chef was sitting, I enquired if she had checked the ticket she said “yes, look it arrived some 55 minutes after we arrived” as the time had been logged, looking quite pleased with herself. But no one could comment why it had taken that long to get there and why we were left in the corner! All they could do was stand there and shrug their shoulders.
If this place does not recognise their failings and that a meal is an experience which includes ambiance and proper service as well as good quality food they will not survive. Their location is not perfect with the entrance up an ally sheared with a night club and situated above another bar with very little front advertising they have to make sure they keep those that do visit happy and walking away feel that was a fantastic night.
