My boyfriend and i had seen recommendations for this pub before visiting Torquay - indeed i believe it is the oldest pub in the area! We enjoyed a couple of drinks on the Friday evening shortly having arrived in the area - the service was good and the pub had a real community feel about it where very clearly lots of people knew one another!

We returned on the Saturday late afternoon and while we couldn't stay to try out the menu (food coming out looked good!) we did snack on a bowl of chips which were very tasty and reasonably priced.

I agree that a wood burning fire would be great in here - it was a little chilly on the Saturday evening! All in all a nice traditional pub :)

We've had one good bar meal and two mediocre meals in the restaurant here. One thing we can't fault is the choice of beers and real ales on tap. However, we agree with some of the previous comments about a cool reception, both literally and figuratively speaking. The place is calling out for a wood burner or open fire (there doesn't appear to be any central heating) and a few more cheerful/ welcoming people behind the bar.

On a rare night out with my partner, dec 1st 2012, have read the reviews on trip advisor, we were expecting a good meal in warm surroundings on a very cold night, we got poor food, poor service and a cold welcome!!!! In brief as I refuse to waste much more of my time on this establishment, the food was overlooked, we had trio of fish, duck in a cherry and plum sauce was non-resistant, from the
start the waiter put his thumb in the middle of one of the serving spoons, the veg was swimming in water and the handful of chips, were lifeless as I said all other elements were over cooked!!!

At no point did any of the serving staff ask us about our meal, if we had in enjoyed it or not and were totally concentrated on discussing things amongst themselves.

Save your money and go to marks and Spencer's at least the food will be of a decent quality.

Seven real ales, all in top condition. Good food at reasonable prices. An old-fashioned pub where the customer is only right when he's behaving himself. If you want to get drunk and act like a fool, go somewhere else.
