“Well-trained staff”
Reviewed March 5, 2011

This hotel is in a superb location, particularly when you are part of a coach holiday. The reception staff are well-trained and helpful at all times.
The public areas are very spacious with lots of seating. For those who enjoy the entertainment, there is plenty of it in a ballroom well away from most of the accommodation.
The restaurant is cramped and our waiter was not very efficient. (Other staff seemed ok). The menu looks varied but the food in front of you doesn't live up to expectations. The breakast on the final morning turned into chaos when staff could not cope with all guests being told to go to breakfast at 8am!
Our room was extremely basic with a cupboard size en-suite. There was a constant draught from the window. There was only a very thin blanket on the bed and not enough for the zero overnight temperatures .The shower didn't work properly and the walls were covered in black mould. The housekeeping staff did their best though. Apparently, the premier rooms are much better and worth the extra. It's a pity that Shearings won't invest in improving the basic rooms. Guests don't expect luxury, just something clean and comfortable.
Overall, this Shearings break represented good value for money.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review and I am pleased that you found your stay with us to be good value for money and that you found our staff to be helpful to you.
I am sorry if you felt the food was not to your liking and that it was especially busy on the final morning. We do ask guests to stagger their breakfast time to maintain a relaxed eating experience, but sometimes guests do all rush in – especially on the departure morning.
If you had brought to our attention the issue with your bedroom, our staff would have attended to these problems where possible or moved you to an alternative room if one was available.
Thank you once again for posting a review and hopefully we will see you again in the future

I stayed at this hotel on a shearings weekend. After reading some of the previous reviews I was thinking if I had done the right thing. Our room was excellent and front facing. It was also warm in the rooms,The staff were excellent and helpful. The food was good and the location was perfect as my friend has walking problems with the bus stop right out side the door and another less than a minutes walk.I did not see any black patches or wall paper hanging off the walls. Some people expect 5 star treatment for only £99.00.There was plenty of seating in the main lounge and entertainment area.We are going back to this hotel in the auturm for another weekend. This is the third shearings hotel that we have been to and they have all been good but this is the best so far.The best way to go to town is to catch the bus 12/12a 31/34 to Castle Circus and it is down hill all the way right back to the hotel. The only thing that I would agree with is that the beds need replacing as they are worn out.

Just stayed 5 days at the hotel on a Shearings holiday. Whilst agreeing that the dining room was cramped, we found the hotel cracking value for money. Food was good. The decor is dated but hotel overall is fine .would come again

We have stayed here before and also at other Shearings hotels so knew what to expect. OK the building is old and could do with a bit of upgrading generally but, for a 'cheap and cheerful' holiday, this is a great place to stay.
The food is fine, hot and served promptly. Normal Shearings menu.
The entertainment is good - cheesy but enjoyable and Tamar certainly works hard to get everyone enjoying themselves.
The location is super - right on the front. Book a high room if you don't want to hear the traffic noise as the rooms (except for the upgraded ones) are not double glazed although be prepared to wait for the lift as there is only 1 (small) lift for the whole hotel.
I agree with the comments re the aged beds, however, we requested extra pillows and this request was promptly met with no problems.

Stayed 4 nights on a Shearings tour. We considered our break good value for money and enjoyed our stay at the Torbay hotel. There was things we could have complained about but bearing in mind it is only rated 3* and a very reasonable rate we were satisfied with everything apart from the bed. The mattress was lumpy and we could feel the springs. The pillows were bad too. I asked if we could have a replacement mattress and we did get one after 2 nights but it was no better. We could have upgraded to a superior room but I am not sure it would have been any better and it would have doubled the cost of the stay. Apart from the bed the room was fine. A lovely view overlooking the marina, tea and coffee and ample storage space. Plenty of hot water and clean towels daily. Only a bar of soap provided though, no shampoo etc. We found the public rooms on the cool side especially the entertainment room although you could get warmed up if you joined in the nightly line and sequence dancing. We enjoyed the food apart from the fish on the first evening and the bread and butter pudding on the last. Apparently all the Bay group of hotels have the same weekly menu so if we go again we will know what to choose next time. There was always a choice 3 starters and 4 or 5 main courses. The lamb tagine was good and we enjoyed all the soups. I see someone has complained about the breakfast but we though it was very good. The porridge was just as I like it and it was nice to have it served rather than have to queue up at a buffet, The poached eggs were as good as I have had anywhere including 5* hotels. All the staff were friendy and helpful. The location was ideal for the town and the promanade.

Have just returned from 5days spent at the Torbay Hotel. We wont be going back. We had no sleep, very noisy and the bed was terrible, very hard and full of lumps where the springs had gone. The evening meals were not too bad but breakfast was appalling. The room was large and reasonably clean. The entertainment was very good and the staff were helpful and polite. The decor is very tired in the rooms, we had a nice large black patch on our ceiling, there were quite a few lights in the room but due to dark shades it was very dim and had difficulty trying to read on a night.
