We tend to visit Yukisan when celebrating a birthday or something similar as it can be a tad on the pricey side (glass of house wine £5+) but the food is always prepared for you and of the highest standard.

They have a massive selection, which is good for those who are 'scared' of sushi, and are always helpful when questioned about dishes.

The atmosphere in there is great - you can even sit in an authentic Japanese manner, should your back allow - on the floor!

There's a lunch menu too which is better value, but of a more limited choice (2 courses for £12, 3 courses for £17, I think).

If you lie asain cuisine, it's definitely worth a try.

There are two choices of seating in Yukisan: traditional seating (on normal chairs) or traditional Japanese seating on cushioned chairs at floor level; me and my other half opted for the latter. This is up in the warmly decorated attic where we were lead and seated at our table. This type of seating is not for the less-flexible, as space under the short tables is on the small side; especially if you have long legs like me, although at most of the tables there is room beside you to stretch your legs out. You are given only chopsticks to eat with which can be challenging to begin with, but can also provides excellent entertainment. We were the only ones upstairs, but there was a nice atmosphere floating up from downstairs. I would say that the music could have been more inclined towards Japanese tradition but the warm acoustic was nice.
The menu is extensive and there is something for everyone, including those who don't like sushi or seafood(like my partner). We had three courses, and each was excellently presented and exquisit in flavour. With knowledge of Japanese food we expected the portions (especially the main courses) to be rather small, but this preconception was banished when they arrived and were very large.
My partner had the Bento box from the set menu and it was huge, as well as delicious. I had a roast duck breast, not as tender as i expected but full of flavour. The rice was also like no rice i have ever tasted. We also ordered a side of udon noodles, which was massive! Almost a meal in itself.
They also offer a selection of asian beers, Kirin being a favourite of mine, western beers, wines and traditional japanese wine. We shared a carafe of dry sake; quite a particular flavour, for those who wonder it was like a mellow tequila.
After seeing "deep fried green tea ice-cream" on the menu I had to have desert. It sounds almost off putting but was absolutely delicious, the ice crem was almost totally solid inside and goes very well with the warm batter. The deep fried banana with coconut was also amazing.
Overall an excellent experience and somewhere we will definitely be returning to. After having what we did the lunch and dinner set menus present excellent value for money.

Have eaten here a few times now. There is definitely not much consistency. Once the food was fantastic whilst on another occasion it was quite mediocre. Their soups are vergood, lobster was below average, sushi is good. Still worth the gamble for the ambience!

We really like this place and make the 50 minute drive once a month or so to Plymouth from Cornwall as the food is really excellent. The Japanese food gives something for everyone so for people not taking to raw fish there are plenty of cooked dishes with lots of meat if you like that sort of thing. Next best Japanese to Okawari in Ealing. If you go for the set menus or the tasting menu then it is both really good quality and also good value. If you go off piste then it is not cheap by any means but it is excellent quality. Not sure about the wasabi mayo and chips though! Perhaps some South West delicacy we are not aware of!
