Owner description: A centrepiece on Plymouth's Hoe, Smeaton's Tower is one of the city's most recognisable and well-loved landmarks. The lighthouse was originally built out on the notorious Eddystone Reef in 1759. It was taken down in the early 1880s and approximately two thirds of its structure moved stone by stone to its current resting place. Now standing at 72 feet high, it offers brilliant views of Plymouth Sound and beyond. Visitors can climb to the top courtesy of a series of stairs and some of the original 18th century ladders.

I'd taken lots of pictures of Smeaton's Tower or 'The Lighthouse' over my stay and decided I wanted to go up it. I was a little surprised there was a £2 entry fee to climb up the steps to look out. Essentially you're just paying to look through a window, I know the money must go towards keeping the tower all nice. But I think maybe just a Donation box would be better? So people can choose how much they want to pay. Or maybe place a little cafe nearby where the funds go towards the upkeep of Smeaton's Tower.

Nonetheless, this lighthouse is pretty to look at and is perfectly situated on The Hoe.

The tower is situation close to the sea with spectacular views and very impressive. It is situated on The Hoe and there is lots more to see in the area.

My 5 year old son and my husband whizzed up the 93 steps no problem, although being 6ft my husband had to duck quite a bit in some places. Good views from the top and my son got a sticker to add to his holiday scrapbook.

I never get tired of visiting Smeaton's Tower and my daughter always asks to go in whenever the light house is opne. On the last occasion, she chose Smeaton's Tower instead of the fairground rides on the Hoe! Plenty of historical information, beautiful views whether on a sunny or story day! Good for exercise and excellent value.

What a wonderful experience. How many cities can you visit a real lighthouse. The climb is well worth the effort. Such wonderful views over the city and Plymouth sound from the top.
