Fantastic gardens, lots of different walks some with views out over the estuary, take a picnic and make a full day out. There is even a small beach area where children can paddle on a nice day.

There are more trees and shrubs than formal gardens. We have been in the spring and the flowers are lovely then.

The gardens are for all seasons, from spring colour with masses of bulbs, to roses and herbaceous plants, to autumn colour in the various trees. The water gardens are relaxing listening to the fountain splashing away.

Great circular walk and area's for for a picnic's with benches and small tables dotted here and there. Lovely views across the estuary with a bird hide on the path although it looks in land so to speak and many birds of all kinds waders we had seen a few small white egrets and the herons, over to the forest a family of buzzards being mobbed by crows. By the time we had walked all the way around it was time for a a coffee and cake (this waste line will never get any smaller!) up at the cafe and that will take a good three hours of the day. Open all year (well not Christmas Day)and free car parking. Nice shop on site and of course the house, but book your tickets in advance for the house if you can,it will save waiting around.

Very nice place but you do need good weather. The house doesn't open until noon and then you have to get a ticket. All the noon tickets had gone by 11:45 and we had tickets for 12:10. We got to the house at 12:04 but was not allowed to stand inside the hall despite the blistering wind and rain.
This rather spoilt our visit but hopefully this was a case of one person having a bad day
