“Not your usual beach”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

Burgh island is a delight to see on a dry day.it is different because when the tide is out one can walk over to the island, but when the tide is in there is the necessity to take a tractor ride across.there is a pub and a lovely art deco style hotel on the island. On the mainland there is a coastal path to Challabrough.Parking is pricey at Burgh beach but it is clean and sandy.

“You have to be joking!”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

In Devon for our anniversary and decided to take my partner to see the world famous art deco hotel on Burgh Island. The car park at Bigbury-on-Sea is pricey but only to be expected. Not a huge walk across the causeway at low tide and yes, the island and hotel look magnificent. But that's where it starts - and ends if, like us, you are a casual visitor. The hotel looks good and you may have seen it on TV. Make the most of that because you won't get to see it unless you are staying there. All the gates are locked and barred and liberally sprinkled with notices to the effect that the hotel is only open to residents and people with restaurant reservations. And then there is the pub, The Pilchard, supposedly dating back to the 1300's. Yeah and my name is Hertz Van Rental! The trouble is that two thirds of the pub is also reserved for hotel residents, including the only non beach level outside seating - again, signs a plenty! The casual visitor has to queue for access to one small room where, if you are lucky, you get to spend nearly £20 for two very mediocre crab sandwiches, a pint of understrength beer and a half of cider. Oh, and just to add insult to injury - there's no loo! I rated this as terrible - and actually the island itself isn't, the scenery is beautiful - just so angry that the owners of the island/hotel are content to rip people off.

“Must visit”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

This place is a great place to visit, when the tide is out you can walk across and when it's in they use a tractor with very big wheels to transport people to and fro.

Great little pub and lovely hotel on the island, as well a nice gentle walk around the island. Could probably do the whole island in les than a half an hour.

One of Devons finest.

“time your crossing!”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

A lovely little island across from the beach. Once on the island if your not staying at the hotel it doesnt take long to walk around the island. do time your crossing though if wanting to walk over otherwise you will need to pay to cross back over on the tractor which is good fun!

Went to Burgh Island for my dear friends 50th birthday, to a murder mystery. Murder mystery Ok, have been to better, but the hotel an environment is stunning. Just love the art deco. Staff so friendly and answered all the questions we asked. Bit too expensive for us to stay at hotel on Burgh Isaland so stayed at pub - brilliant cannot wait to go again for lunch and afternoon tea
