“Hotel getting a bit tired”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2014

This hotel is starting to show it's age, the furnishings and décor are getting a bit tired and shabby. The ceilings are the lowest I have ever experienced in a modern building, I'm 6ft 5in and standing in the bath for a shower I actually hit my head on the ceiling. Single glazed windows provide little sound-proofing and the wind does howl around the building. View from the penthouse restaurant is pretty impressive. Make sure you avoid rooms close to the lifts. The outdoor car pak has some of the tightest spaces I have come across.

This hotel won't win any prizes for architecture but it does have a spectacular outlook onto the Hoe and sea beyond. It is also very close to shopping area so it has the best of both worlds including a car park (outdoors and indoors).

For families of five this is a rare find, as it has several rooms able to accommodate the whole family in one room. Other reviews mention decor being dated - this is true however everything is clean and efficiently run.

The swimming pool is well presented and also kept clean, also having some great views of the Hoe through large windows.

Staff everywhere in the hotel are courteous and well trained. The breakfast buffet is pretty standard but did have freshly cooked options and nice touches like fruit smoothie shots. Breakfast time does get quite busy at times and the room is not particularly large but does have an overflow area.

In conclusion this is not a cutting edge hotel but all the fundamentals are in place, professional friendly staff, clean and tidy with a good pool and reasonable food and good position.

I stay here whenever I can while on business in Plymouth. Rooms are of a good size, very clean and yes, they are slightly worn but this just adds a certain charm. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful, the restaurant is good and there is underground parking. All in all, good value for the money and a warm and comfortable stay.

I am 17 nights into a 50 night stay and I really wanted to share an honest and sensible review.
Firstly the hotel employees are exceptional. From day one I have been welcomed in true plymouth style. Nothing is too much trouble and every day I am delighted by the service. The reception team are fantastic especially Lisa. The restaurant team have been amazing and I always look forward to seeing Jeremy and Christina who go out of their way to chat to me and ensure I feel welcome whenever I see them.
Food wise and remember I will have tried it all soon! Is on the whole very good. Breakfast is great I have no idea how anyone can say it's not. Great selection. I would recommend the lamb it is very very good. The restaurant has a fantastic view of the Hoe and I have wiled away many hours in lounge bar having a cup of tea taking in the view. It does rain a lot in Plymouth and the view can be obscured by the inclement weather however I am not sure the hotel can be blamed for this!! My suggestion to those who have moaned about this is go for a walk and enjoy the beauty of the Hoe!
Great gym and pool facilities and again the employes are lovely.
I have stayed here on and off previously so I have probably seen most of the room types. They are well sized, very comfortable beds, clean and well maintained and as an IHG member the wifi is great.
Now the hotel may not be at the cutting edge of modern it is a touch dated but frankly I would rather have amazing people looking after me, a fantastic location and be comfortable.
So all in all I couldn't ask for more and would highly recommend the hotel for business or pleasure.

Went Plymouth to see a show and stayed at The Holiday Inn overlooking the Hoe. Whilst the staff were very helpful, the actual hotel badly needs a face lift internally, it just seemed a bit drab in the décor. Food for breakfast was ok but as it is prepared for a huge number of guests at the same time the cooked breakfast items were a bit dried out unlike freshly cooked food. Overall I thought overpriced for the stay, would I stay there again? yes but only after trying alternative hotels.

Room Tip: High floor rooms for a view

Excellent location with good spa facilities.Helpful staff but the building is a bit tired although the room was good. Car parking is interesting being quite tight to manoeuvre in a reasonably large car

Dear Alison H

Thank you for your post. Our underground car park is quite tight on the corners and the ramps for a larger car however we do have an external car park that is open plan and less challenging.
Once again thank you for your post.
Kind regards, John Rothwell
