Unless you are tanning and bathing on the umpteenth day of a long running hot spell during an implausibly good summer. On balance I think credit is due to the city council for the restoration and renovation but in my occasional experience the water is cold there is usually a chilling breeze and the brusque attitude of the lifeguards and the pressures of ticket pricing and time slots make it a touch difficult to be sure of having a restful balmy time in or by the water. My impression from memories and anecdotes and local folklore is that in the thirties fifties and sixties it was always packed fun and this was THE place to be.

Visited last week and just loved every bit of this iconic, art-deco attraction. What a treat to swim in sea water without the gunge. To see the continental ferries coming and going was very special. The weather was just so perfect and what a view out over Plymouth Sound. Staff were friendly and lifeguards chatty. It was pretty busy, but the swimming area is vast, you almost feel as if you have the place to yourself. There's good locker provision and hot showers. Some people brought their own portable chairs and picnics and for an entry at less than £3 for concessions I thought it was just perfect - especially when coupled with a champagne lunch at Gary Rhode's new restaurant just across the road. One of the best days of summer 2013.

This place gets packed in the summer and the "sessions" they do aren't great for family's who want to spend the whole day out. It's ran by the council and is good value for money but there are definitely ways to improve this pool. They need to get more sunbeds and not do sessions.

Went in today, what an architectural gem. Loved the clean lines and shapes of the building, angles on the railings and the old school atmosphere. Better yet, as I just wanted to take pictures and appreciate the architectural side of the place rather than actually swim, I was let in completely free and showed around by one of the staff.

We were lucky enough to visit on a hot day (otherwise wetsuits may be a good idea). My children (aged 10 & 13) spent couple of hours in there. The pool and surroundings were very clean and the view was amazing. There were ample lifeguards who did a brilliant job so you can rest assured that safety is paramount. The sunbeds were all being used by the time we got there but there was still plenty of seating around the edge of the pool. Was good that the children are allowed gloats or inflatables (these are supplied but you can probably take your own). Very good value for money. Would definitely go again.
