Stayed overnight at the New International last week. The hotel exterior does look a little sad but everywhere inside was well cared for. The breakfast was excellent and the staff first class. We had read a review about a grumpy receptionist and asked our very helpful and pleasant receptionist who it was. She said it was her! Certainly not the case so do take everything you read with a pinch of salt!

We stayed here for a couple of nights this week taking advantage of the little one being on holiday with the school so we had chance to have a few days relaxing. On arrival the receptionist was excellent and very friendly, room was clean whilst the hotel is a little dated it was very clean, cleanliness is more important to me than anything else! Our room didn't have an inspiring view but we were not there to sit looking out the windows so again not problematic, we booked this through a discount site and only saw some of the mixed reviews later, I accept some travellers may not be impressed but you can't please everyone!! Whenever travelling we never pay for breakfasts as it's always much better value to eat elsewhere ( there is a Weatherspoon's opposite).Although we booked this hotel for it's leisure facilities we didn't use them so can't comment on them, we were having too good a time in Plymouth to spend a lot of time at the Hotel. Car park is not in the best of condition, it is only £3.00 a day though, we weren't even charged for this which was a nice bonus. Worst part for me was the large graffiti on the back wall, if approaching from the car park this is your first impression of the Hotel - note to owners - get it cleaned off, does spoil the initial impression of your Hotel! In relation to the heat, we stayed when it was hot and the ceiling fan and large opening window were ample to keep the room cool. Personally would have liked a mini bar in the room as the bar is only open until 11.00 pm. We were on holiday after all! Would we stay again, yes, it's clean and has good staff, what more do you want!!! One other thing for the owners to note on a service level, if you have a lot of elderly guests visiting why not get them escorted to their rooms and show them how to use the key card room entry, we had to assist three guests in obtaining entry to their rooms which didn't mind doing at all ( lovely irish OAP's) but if the Hotel had done this it would have enhanced the service received. As a smoker, I went down late one night for a cigarette before going to sleep ( why no cigarette butt bin - butt ends all over the floor - again first impressions) stood outside smoking and there was an abundance of Police and Ambulances passing with sirens going, made me glad to have an inner room. Wifi worked very well, towels changed daily, though did have to nip to Primark as I'm a big lad and use two bath towels when showering, haven't stayed in many Hotels that only give you one - another note to owners?. Overall a nice hotel, pleased to recommend it and whilst I am sure there are better Hotels in Plymouth none are going to always be perfect, the staff make or break a Hotel and the staff here were excellent, even down to the Cleaners who all wished me a Good Morning with a bright smile on one of my early morning cigarette trips. Bed was not saggy baggy or too soft- i slept like a baby.I personally think some of the reviews on here are unfair but we all look for different things in the places we stay, for me it has to be clean with good staff and in this respect it ticked the boxes. The location is superb for walking in to the Harbour.

Room Tip: If you are not fussed about a view go for an inside room so you can't hear the Police/Ambulance...

Just returned from a 1 night stay at this hotel (27th/28th July). There were 5 of us, Three Adults and 2 Children (16) and (14). We had two rooms (106) which was a single room and (102) which was a family room. The family room was huge with one double bed and a single bed in and another room with two single beds in, bathroom was massive, very clean. Towels were a bit on the small side but clean and plenty of them.

The single room was also very nice but was a little hot.

Breakfast in the morning was freshly cooked and very nice.

The pool, sauna and steam room were clean and nice and the changing room very clean.

The staff at reception were excellent and very helpful.

we didn't eat dinner there so cannot comment on that.

would definitely stay there again, it was only a mile from the Barbican sea port.

A big thank you to the staff who took pictures for us and let us photocopy some documents

thank you

Steve

Room Tip: Ask for Room 102 if with 4 or 5... plenty of room

Hotel situated in the centre. Good wifi. Rooms are clean, hot and very dated, my nan would love it. There are a lot better hotels in plymouth for similar money, must make sure I book one of them next time.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights from 25th July attending a wedding which was actually held in total at the hotel and it has to be said, the venue was a superb choice and the whole execution of the Civil Ceremony and the festivities after was first class. Most weddings at hotel venues I have attended have fallen far short of what was hoped for, but the New Continental exceeded in nearly every department, including the food, in both quality and presentation.
The only negative points which I have to make was in the bedroom and the intense heat, as there is no air conditioning. Other areas of the hotel are catered for. The hotel is obviously aware of this situation as they supply pretty powerful fans in the rooms but all they do is waste electricity and circulate the heat. With temperatures outside in the late twenties the heat permeated deep into the corridors and rooms especially above the first floor and the actual temperature in our room (119) was measured by me at 11-15pm at 38 Celsius and it was unbearable, even with the windows in the bathroom and bedroom fully open at night to try to get some air in, it was a fruitless task. I fully appreciate that temperatures like this in the UK are fairly short lived, but when you are paying 4 star prices for the equivalent of a 1 or 2 star room you have the right to expect certain comforts primarily "air conditioning", a minimum of a 4'-6" double bed not a 4'-00 double (to make the room look bigger) and draws to put clothes in. In addition if you need bottled drinking water buy it elsewhere as a litre bottle from the bar was £4-60....yes I did say £4-60. I would have loved to give a 5 star rating on this hotel, but the bedroom was far below reasonable expectations.

Room Tip: The room comfort for sleeping in winter would be fine, however during the high season and hot summer...

Staff were very helpful did everything and anything you wanted them to do. We were in Plymouth for 3 days when all accommodation in the city was very scarce, we were fortunate that this hotel had a room for one night. We ate at the bistro on the night we stayed and the food was exceptional, the staff attentive which made our experience all the better. Our only regret was they were not available for the rest of our visit.

For a 3 star hotel I was very pleased with the facilities that I used. My sister booked into a 4 star hotel 10 minutes aaa and was not as happy there. Arrived on Friday afternoon with my 21 year old son. Receptionist seemed not so friendly by my experiences but she later warmed up. Our room was lovely but had a double bed when I had requested 2 singles. The hotel was fully booked so when the receptionist managed to get us a room with a double and single bed in we were most pleased. Lovely room, good view, right next to the pavilions. Free wifi. Bathroom had ventilation as there were no windows, nice modern TV. The bed was SO comfortable, pillows had 2 variations of softness, my pillows were like sleeping on clouds, great lighting, slept well! The purple satin things thrown over the lower half of the beds could do with a boil wash as they all had had grease stains, that was in both rooms we entered so obviously a problem. Not much noise from the road below our window. Clean towels and bedding every morning.

Breakfast was great, staff waited on us like silver service. Brought us toast, tea/coffee, and a choice of 5 hot breakfasts incl full English / croissants / haddock / kipper, haddock was mouthwatering, kippers were too boney - steer clear. We helped ourself to cereal, yoghurt, fruits, while we waited for the cooked breakfast to arrive. Didn't get to try the restaurant as we were out in the evenings.

Use of the swimming pool, steam and sauna rooms were all included in the price. Hotel is in walking distance of The Hoe, and 5 minutes to the main shopping areas, and clubs etc.

We were only there 2 nights but thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
