We stayed there for four nights This was a "national Trust break and whilst the meals were not up to an "a la carte" stage ,they were very good for the price paid.
The decor and building is old but everything was in excellant condition
The staff,in particular those in the Restauant, were exceptionally helpful and we would highly recommend it.

We arrived after completing the Devon Coast to Coast bike ride. The hotel accommodated the bikes without issue providing a lock up room for storage. The bar service was a little slow to start with but I think this was down to the start of a new shift and the fact we were all parched! Our room was up in the tower with the classic sash windows. Room was massive, with a lounge area, sleeping area, and a very modern bathroom with everything we needed. The staff at reception and breakfast were very attentive and the breakfast was very nice. Porridge with a Devon style twist (clotted cream), and the smoked haddock was excellent. If I was staying in Plymouth again I would stay here, its close to the town centre and to the sea front and ports should you be venturing on a cruise or ferry crossing.

I stayed here with a group on a walking holiday. You need to arrive early to secure a parking place or pay £8 a day on a meter nearby. My room was decent, one of the refurbs. Room 205. There is a separate shower cubicle which is small (and I'm only petite). The shower was good but the shower head didn't adjust. It drenched me from above and the cubicle was so small I couldn't avoid the water hitting my head. The room is above the walkway to the car park and the outside area/bin store to the kitchen. There were food smells rising up as it was warm and it was necessary to have the window open. They could do with new pillows for the beds. The biggest disappointment was the evening meal. We had a 3 course meal for 4 nights. The first night I chose soup (which was good) followed by Hunters Chicken which comprised of a very small chicken leg ( more bones than meat) and a minimal amount of veg. I chose ice cream for dessert but they had run out of chocolate ice cream ( clearly not a special ice cream). The second night soup again was good, with tuna as mains. This came as a large piece, but it was 90% bone, a large bone and small bones within the meaty parts. Crème brulee wasn't cooked well. The cooked breakfast offered 1 rasher bacon, 1 sausage ( bland), 1 tomato, choice of egg. Overall a very disappointing experience.

Dear HarryLeeds

Thank you for your review. I was disappointed to read your comments. We have a large amount of guests who travel with groups, who are very satisfied by the value for money we provide our group travellers. Please see John T's review above, who also travelled with a group and found the food to be 'very good'.

Many thanks again,

My family booked three rooms for four night in this hotel. First impressions are important and we were welcomed most warmly by the helpful reception staff. The bedrooms were comfortable and well appointed. Breakfasts were excellent with hot food prepared individually for each guest and a good selection of juices, fruits and breads. On the first evening we had dinner in the restaurant and again we were impressed by the very friendly staff who gave the impression of enjoying their jobs. The meal was excellent and we had no hesitation in dining on another two evenings at this hotel. This was one of the best hotels that I have experienced for several years and would strongly recommend it to other visitors to Plymouth.

Room Tip: Like most hotels there is likely to be a wedding at weekends. The upper floor bedrooms are relativel...

Visited this hotel from 20/8/13 to 23/8/13 with my wife. It is a lovely old building and the staff were very welcoming. Our room was large at the front of the building and had everything we required. The breakfasts had a good choice and was very tasty. It was a very good base to see Plymouth from with easy walks into the city centre and the Barbican areas. I would return.

Party of four went for Dinner last night
Food was nice and reasonably priced . But the service was poor, an inexperienced waiter who did not know the menu, got the order wrong, and had no support from other staff who just seemed to watch him struggle. The main courses did not get served together and we were left waiting for over 5 minutes for two dishes to arrive.
A very limited menu but what we did order was very tasty and well presented.

Room Tip: Only dined
