“Great place to stay after a trip to France”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

We wanted an overnight stay after disembarking from the Brittany Ferry at 21:30, and this could not be more convenient. We were celebrating an anniversary, so we treated ourselves to a "master double" room, booking via Booking.com. The room we were allocated (416) was better than we could have wished for, with a huge bed (2 standard singles pushed together but with bedding across both), and a separate lounge area. It was clean, plush and well decorated. They have clearly sorted out the problems with this room (see review by Trish K). Our only regret was that we were not able to spend more time in the room! The bathroom fittings are ultra modern - in fact I felt that in the case of the shower the design seemed to be higher priority than the function, as you cannot direct the large overhead shower as you may wish. I liked the respect for the old and traditional, such as the William Morris repro wallpaper in the reception and stairwells, together with the modern touches in the bathroom. Breakfast was very good, freshly cooked. However, it finished at 09:30, which we felt was a bit early for some tourists. We got there around 09:00 and the staff were already laying up for lunch. Everything was still available even after 09:30, and was good, but I sensed they were happy once we had vacated so they could get on. The staff were friendly efficient , and overall we felt we had a very good experience.

Room Tip: Master double if you want space and a big bed!

As a positive note, the staff at Reception were very helpful....it then went downhill. The rooms need a complete overhaul and the holes in the bedding just helped the view that this is a run down hotel. Biscuit wrappings were still under the table and had been missed by housekeeping. The doors to the restarent are locked to stop early arrivals and to hear 2 staff bickering loudly about whose job it was to open them put me off eating. The menu was not that good and expensive. Breakfast was totally overcooked and the poached egg was solid. I am a big fan of Best Western but this is probably the worst I've ever stayed in (have stayed before and no improvement that I can see).

Room Tip: Turn right out of the hotel and then left at the lghts and a good value pub with good reasonably pri...

We were given a lovely refurbished room (416) with a large coffee stain on the carpet and several light bulbs missing or broken. This was rectified next day but should have been done prior to our arrival. The food is very good but after the chef's hard work, something goes badly wrong by the time it reaches your table, 3 times, a simple starter of olives, tomatoes and bread with oil reached me with one or more components missing. Once, I only received bread and oil! I had to ask for fruit and yogurt at breakfast time, they just don't put it out. This morning, we ordered tea and coffee but the tea never appeared and the coffee has no special coffee aroma, I wasn't sure what it was. The evening cafetiere coffee is good. The young staff are pleasant but poorly trained, the older staff are familiar and indiscreet regarding other guests. They all need Alex Polizzi to show them how it's done. The small lift looks as though it hasn't been hoovered for days. A lovely building ideally situated but only the food has the wow factor. Very disappointing and we won't be going back.

Room Tip: 416 on the 4th floor overlooks the street so you can see the world go by. It's a split level roo...

The Duke may have dated decor which I appreciate goes with the age/style/history of the building, but the staff look after the building well. My room was impressively clean and well kept, no awful black marks around the bath which you come to expect in hotels.
The staff were friendly, and the lady on reception for check in was very good. Breakfast was ok, nothing to rave about and the staff were attentive.
My room was on the first floor, I know it was the last room as it was mentioned. A Twin room, very spacious with a lovely sitting area, and a bath/shower. The kitchen extract is right outside, so about 5.00/5.30am there was a buzzing that vibrated around the room, i guess the kitchen team had arrived. Fortunately I can block out dull constant noises as it doesn't bother me, but I know why it is the last room to sell...so beware room 108 if you need peace and quiet!
I would stay again, as a clean and friendly hotel out ways the dated decor!

Room Tip: Do not book room 108 if extraction noise is an issue to you, or get a good discount on the room!

Thank goodness the Blitz of WWII spared this wonderful building! It is beautiful. We had a really lovely room (515) almost at the top of the round tower on the corner of the building. The quirky semi-circular shape, slightly sloping floors and beautiful views on 3 sides made this one of the most characterful rooms we've ever stayed in. The staff were all friendly, welcoming and efficient. Breakfast, served in yet another delightful round room, had plenty of choice and the Full English was delicious. We also appreciate breakfast being available up to 10.30 am at the weekends as we love a lie-in! The icing on the cake is the hotel is dog friendly.

Room Tip: Room 515 at the top of the round tower is lovely. No doubt all the rooms below would be the same unu...

We celebrated our wedding at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel in June.

From the moment we had our first meeting with Mel, the events organiser at The Duke, to the time that we left after our big weekend, the service was exceptional, the atmosphere nostalgic and magical and the overall experience completely relaxed and professional.

The events organising was completely stress free and fun, with Mel taking charge effortlessly whilst giving us the freedom to have lots of creative input into our big day. Mel was professional and charming and we always felt she had lots of time and attention for us.

On the day, the staff were so attentive and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a small baby with us for the weekend and I lost count of how many times staff offered to take meals or drinks up to the room to the person babysitting; or offered to help us with gifts or bags.

The wedding meal service was efficient and effortless. The food was delicious and our master of ceremonies was there at all times to ensure everything ran smoothly. Everyone was so friendly and we felt as though they really respected that it was our big day and made an effort for everything to be fun and happy.

We also had a couple of breakfasts and meals at the restaurant outside the wedding day. These were also of the highest standard, delivered with the usual understated grace and charm.

The hotel is one a of a kind. With the gorgeous old photos of the hotel throughout its history lining the walls and the stunning original features; it is clear that the building and its history are valued and graciously conserved. It is beautiful.

Our room was lovely wiith a striking four poster bed and amazing shower. We had a wonderful and very romantic weekend, especially with the flowers, fruit bowl and champagne that appeared in our room as part of our wedding package.

We can't wait to go back for a few drinks at the bar or a meal at the restaurant. We noticed a big band night coming up and would love to return for an event. All of our guests had a fantastic time and were all keen to come back too.

The Duke is all at once a stunning destination for big events, a grand and important piece of history and also just a lovely place to go for a drink or a bite to eat with family and friends.

Thank you so much!!

The staff are very friendly and helpful.

The rooms are clean and comfortable, except for the creaking floors (it's all you can hear all night, and we were on the top floor!).

Breakfast was minimal, there wasn't anything left by the time we got there after a big tour group.

We also ate dinner at the hotel which was very nice, service was slow (again I think because of the tour group), but otherwise the meals were delicious.

Only having Wi-Fi in the lobby is a little annoying, but not the end of the world.

Overall, a charming hotel with lovely staff.
