Ask to see the room before giving your card details. We were shown a very cold and dark room which they kindly changed when we objected to it. The second room was on the fifth floor with a small television alcove. The single beds had threadbare sheets and a minute pad for a pillow with one blanket. It was freezing. The bathroom had a green brazil shaped soap and the towels were greige and very thin. We were not woken as requested and so missed breakfast. Dinner was basic but very reasonable as was breakfast the next morning. The hotel really should invest in new bed linen and towels , provide adequate heating and sufficient soap for two people staying two nights.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before giving your card details. We were shown a very cold and dark room which t...

Hotel carpets, decor on the whole are dated. The room on the 5th floor was hot and small. The bed was tiny and the pillow were thin. The bathroom was small and wasn't that clean but i didn't complain because we were there only one night. The breakfast was excellent and the staff were very helpful and friendly, would I stay again, probably yes but in a double room on a lower floor.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a lower floor not the one next to the lift which was room 502

I found the Duke full of character and a joy to visit. The location is very central and easy to find with good parking. I was attending a function held at the Hotel by a client. The staff were welcoming and offered to guide me to the function room after I had unpacked in the bedroom. The bedroom continued the theme of the hotel and provided high quality finishes. The bed proved comfortable to sleep in and the room was quiet as well.
Although I had a set menu, the food was excellent and well presented. Sometimes with larger functions, hotels struggle to deliver all meals in a timely fashion and hot. The Duke achieved this with very efficient staff who were friendly and polite. I missed breakfast due to an appointment but my resounding memory of this hotel is the superb character they have retained and the very helpful staff.

Room Tip: In discussion with some friends the rear facing rooms were quieter

A very grand old hotel, that has stood the test of time. It's a Best Western, and they have managed to keep a sense of the period. Staff were very friendly and efficient and helped me whenever we asked. The room was large, but the bathroom less so; perfectly adequate, just a little small, given the size of the overall space. Tea/Coffee makings in the room, but would have liked a small fridge as well. Bed was a litle soft.

Small carpark around the back on Citadel Road and then walk across the metal walkway into the back of the hotel.

Breakfast was excellent, well worth it! All in all a nice place to stay at a very reasonable rate.

I cannot recommend this hotel more highly. It oozes good old fashioned charm, attention to detail, comfort and takes care of all one's needs.
Very comfy rooms spacious and attractive. Great meals we dined in often. Very central-easy walk to the How, Barbican and town centre.

I stayed for 1 night with my 11 year old son in January 2013 and was very impressed. The building is stunning and the areas I visited were maintained to a very high standard and in keeping with the age of the building. I love the Grand Piano in the Lobby. The beds were comfortable and the house keeping was to a very high standard. I managed to get free wifi in my room as I had requested which was a bonus. Breakfast was pleasant and the cooked breakfast was really nice - Great Sausages ! Unsurprisingly in the first week of January the restaurant was closed, however we were able to order food from the bar. This was very reasonable in price, and the burger my son ordered was really really nice - Large and Meaty! add free parking, a great rate (online) 24 hour service..... Brilliant!

We went there for our annual christmas meal.
Food was brilliant, friendly and proffessional staff with in depth knowledge of wine and dine.
Toilets is clean so is rest of the venue, cannot ask for more.
We even managed to get a custom made dinner for us, Norwegian xmas table in England.
Highly recomendable.
