“Relaxing weekend break”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

Have just spent the weekend (bed and breakfast) at Waterloo house in Lynton and we were very impressed by the standard of both the food and the accommodation on offer. Penelope and Paul are welcoming and friendly, and nothing seems to be too much trouble for them. I had not informed them before our arrival that I am vegetarian, but Paul asked when we arrived. I explained that I would be happy with whatever was available for breakfast, but he cooked me a full breakfast with vegetarian sausages that was really delicious!
Waterloo House is central in Lynton which made a treat to be able to walk around the town in the evening, without needing the car. I would highly recommend Waterloo House to anyone thinking of staying in the area.

Room Tip: We stayed in the fuschia room as we had our dog with us. The bed was very comfortable and the room w...

We appreciate this review and relieved our vegetarian sausages were OK. These can be a very subjective food. I am still looking for the best possible veg. sausage though; suggestions welcome.

We came across Waterloo House purely by chance for a long weekend away at the very end of October, and as we hadn't been in that part of England for a long time we went for it. We were not disappointed in any way.
The house is old and full of character, but our room (the suite on the top floor) was fully equipped and everything worked perfectly!
Paul and Penny were excellent hosts, welcoming and helpful but not in any way intrusive, and always ready with information about the area and its highlights. We are grateful to Penny for suggesting Arlington Court as a destination on day two, when it rained most of the day...
Although we ate out in Lynton (quite an interesting and quiet experience at the very end of the season) Paul's breakfasts deserve special mention, as they really set us up for the day ahead!
One point to note is that parking could be a problem in Lynton in very busy times, although there is a public car park two minutes walk away from the house, and with some planning it is possible to park in nearby streets free of charge.
The area does not need selling here - Lynton and Lynmouth have their own special charm, there are excellent views and great places within walking distance, while the countryside all around is simply stunning.
Very highly recommended.

Room Tip: Choose room 6, the lovely suite on the top floor - but only if you aren't over 6ft tall!

We like to go away for weekend breaks in Britain and love staying in B&B's, especially when they are as charming as this one.
We found Waterloo House to be very clean, comfortable, and cosy. The decor is quite old fashioned, which we liked, and added to the character of the place. Paul and Penny themselves are excellent hosts, very helpful and friendly and Paul is an excellent chef! He cooked us a delicious, quality evening meal, and came out of the kitchen to talk us through the local cheeses he had prepared for our cheese board. The breakfast was also delicious and set us up well for walking around the town and on Exmoor. There are some lovely gift shops in Lyton which actually do sell locally made produce, unlike some places you visit. We did half our Christmas shopping!
Absolutely no negatives with this stay at all :-) We would like to come back to the area next summer, as we were after a relaxing break we missed some of the fantastic walks available, so we will try and stay at the Waterloo again.

Room Tip: The suite was lovely, very good water pressure on the shower! Having long hair this makes so much di...

Waterloo House is one of the best English B&B's we've been to. The hosts - Paul and Penny - are friendly, welcoming, and ready to help out with tips and advice. Try to get room no. 6 if you can - it's a lovely suite on the top floor with cosy armchairs, comfy bed, and almost 100 books you may delve into should the weather surprise you! Small improvements are in order (breakfast could be more varied than a choice between a fry-up and scrambled eggs; the room fridge wasn't exactly used up to capacity with only a tiny milk bottle inside) but on the whole, for this price range, the hotel is just shy of perfect.

This hotel is a real treat because of the unique and genuine welcome together with splendid food. Don't look for a local restaurant; choose exactly what you want to eat at the hotel. Location is superb in Lynton and the wonderful hosts will help you understand what makes North Devon so special.

Room Tip: If you have always wanted a four poster they have it!

We found Waterloo House by chance on the internet. We were very impressed with the hotel website and then when we arrived, we were taken aback by the friendly and warm welcome we received.

We were more than happy with the room we had chosen and were extremely pleased with the quality and excellent standard of the food we received in the hotel resturant. The breakfast was also superb !

Paul and Penny, who have only recently taken-over the hotel were very keen to please and we we very impressed with the extra little touches in the room (fruit bowl / fridge with fresh milk ? complimentry bottles of water.)

The hotel is very well placed within the area to visit all the surrounding sights and is only a two minute walk from the centre of Lynton.

We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and its very friendly hosts.

Once again I apologise for the late response to this review. Until recently I had no idea the responses were so important (new to the industry). The comments are greatly appreciated as the restaurant is still being developed and I must be doing something right. Come back next year and experience vast improvements.

We had planned to stay in the North Exmoor area for a couple of days over Easter and booked Waterloo House at the very last minute not really knowing what to expect. We need not have worried. We found out on arrival that we had arrived on the opening weekend following a change in owners over the 'closed season'. Our hosts Penny and Paul were both delightful, with nothing being too much trouble and both were very keen to ensure our stay was enjoyable. Upon arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome and more importantly a cup of tea and biscuits in the lounge. The thing that we were both impressed with was the very 'homely' feel the house had, not at all like the various 'sterile' hotel chains we have stayed at. The house was a guest house/hotel yet lost non of the feel of a homely environment, somewhere nice to retire to after a busy day exploring. The accomodation was in keeping with the house, which was clean and well presented. We stayed in the room with the four poster bed, which had a bathroom en suite and whilst may not have suited everyones tastes in decor was more than satisfactory. Towels were changed daily without request and the room was supplied with mini fridge, tea and coffee facilities and a complimentary fruit bowl - a nice touch. We stayed on a b@b basis, with breakfast comprising of choice of cereal, toast, full cooked breakfast, orange juice, tea etc the list was endless - we never left feeling hungry and all of the food was prepared fresh, not sat in various pots and pans waiting to be served up. The house does operate as a restaurant and we did enjoy a fantastic evening meal, which again was cooked fresh and was delicious (Well Done Paul!).

PROS:-
Fantastic traditional customer service and genuine hospitality.
Really great hosts.
Very competitive room rates
Very clean and Tidy.
Great Food - cooked fresh with locally sourced products.
Great Location for exploring.
A five minute walk to Lynton cinema - thanks for the advice Penny, a quaint independently run cinema - you must check it out movie lovers!

Cons:-
There isnt any really, decor may not suit everyones tastes
There is no parking however the nearest car park is within throwing distance and is very competitive - no more than 100yds with most of our stay overnight being free or one or two pounds.
That was about it for ourselves.

Paul and Penny are fabulous hosts, working hard to get it right, which is what it is all about - that is what is most important - well done and we will see you again soon.

Room Tip: Phone up and speak to either Penny and Paul directly.

This was our very first review and very welcome it was too. A bit late in responding but we have been so busy this year in devloping this business. Frankly we have also just discovered how important responses are thanks to a Trip Adviser letter. We are still learning this industry and business so its onward and upward from now on with the help of all our guests.
