Owner description: Where the lush valleys of Hoar Oak Water and the East Lyn river tumble together sits Watersmeet House, a 19th-century fishing lodge, now a National Trust shop, tea room and information point. Watersmeet House was built in 1832 as a fishing lodge by the Reverend W.S. Halliday, the son of a rich businessman. The stone for the house was quarried at Watersmeet, above the East Lyn River. Sitting in a beautiful wooded river valley, Watersmeet and its surrounds are a fantastic place to walk, and enjoy the abundant wildlife and nature of this part of Exmoor.

Watersmeet House provides welcome relief after a long walk up the gorge from Lynmouth ( the signpost says it's less than two miles, but it seems a lot further). The location is fantastic, at the junction of two fast-flowing moorland rivers. He staff are friendly and welcoming.

We went here with our two small dogs. You have to pay for parking even if you have a National Trust members card as the parking is owned by the local council.
There is a lovely tea room at the start or end of the walk, depending which way you go and there are signs around telling you what to look for. There are several differnt walks to do of varying distance and difficulty.
It is beautiful and relaxing listening to the waterfalls.
The only thing I would complain about is other dog walkers who do not keep their dogs on leads as you are suppose to do on National Trust property!

I came to watersmeet on a sunny day in February with my 78 year old father, who made it down the hill from the car park to the restraunt without problems. However after a short walk, I felt he would have difficulties getting backup again.
However the most helpfull lady in the restraunt told me how to get my car down so I could pick him up.
This was successfully accomplished, and apart from some fairly dramatic hairpin bends and narrow ledges and bridges I got him safely into the car and back to lynmouth.
Apologies however to the lady who helped me reverse back out of her garden after a slight accident with a broken sign post and a near collision with a couple of slathering hounds.

I first walked to Watersmeet from Lynmouth over 50 years ago and still do the walk whenever I'm in the area. The walk, mainly alongside the river, is calm and peaceful (especially if you visit out of season) and there is much to be seen in the way of flora and fauna.

This beautiful spot is accessibile from at least 3 different routes of varying lengths and types along the river valley, all stunning scenery. One of the routes enables you to park above the valley, there is a charge, and the walk down is steep. This is a welcome sight for lunch or refreshment before making your way back.
The tea garden has a small amount of undercover seating with the sound of the water as a background. The tables are well spaced out with some lovely views.
There is a National Trust Shop in the house too selling the usual enticing things, none too heavy to carry while walking.
