Owner description: Devon's famous Lynton & Lynmouth funicular Cliff Railway is the most exciting way to travel between these two historic towns & will be the highlight of any visit. Enjoy stunning views of the North Devon Coastline as you ride the steepest totally water powered railway in the world or relax in our Cliff Top Cafe with a traditional Devon Cream Tea. This historic Victorian railway opened in 1890. The 862 feet of track rises 500 feet with an impressive gradient of 57% providing stunning views across Lynmouth Bay. The railway is a fully working listed heritage monument is the UK's only fully water powered railway and one of only three examples left in the world.

A good fun way to step back in time and get between Lynton at the top of the hill and Lynmouth at the bottom. As you get into the carriage (which looks like a tram) and you start to descend you get a superb view of the bay as you can look out of the front to take some pictures. Friendly local driver and busy with tourists although we didn't have to queue for very long.

my husband and myself have just had a trip to Lynmouth and we decided to use the cliff railway to go up to Lynton, it was quite a cliff ride! the views over the Bristol Channel were spectacular. The staff were very friendly and we enjoyed a cup of tea and some cake in the cafe at the top, prior to returning back down to Lynmouth.
It was a very enjoyable experience.

Saw this on an episode of Fred Dibnah, just had to go on it, wasn't disappointed, a nice blast from the past. Well worth a visit.

I don't generally mind the walk up to Lynton, but whenever we stay there we always try to get at least one return trip on the cliff railway. A great bit of engineering, still in use after over 100 years, and still vital to the villages. The one time it is definitly welcome is when getting provisions from the shops up in Lynton - much easier to get them down on the lift than walking with heavy bags.

Lynton and Lynmouth are one of our favourite places to visit whilst in the South of England. Just the most beautiful area and scenery. We went on the Cliff railway for the second time and it is a really unique experience, beautifully maintained, and with magnificent views. Both have some really nice little shops to purchase gifts. Excellent leather shop in Lynmouth where I got a gorgeous jacket and gloves at a fraction of the RRP.

Highly recommended.
