“The Gem of Lynmouth”
Reviewed August 21, 2009

This character hotel is one of a kind. The owners take a lot of trouble to treat you to a wonderful stay. Rooms are a good size, everywhere is very clean and well presented, and the whole hotel is full of Shelley memorabilia, without being stuffy! Lynmouth is a beautiful exmoor, seaside town, but take the time to visit The Vanilla Pod Restaurant at the top of the hill in Lynton. Super food, particularly good vegetarian options, and the host is a gentleman. We travelled up late afternoon on the venicular railway and walked back by the very steep path.
I'm planning to revisit and will stay at Shelleys.

First trip to Lynmouth, which could have been digitally mastered it is soo Perfect. Weather was a bit off for the time of year however a little bit of rain matches well with Exmoor.
As you come down the hill from Exmoor the hotel immediately stood out on the left and gave a comforting realisation that that was the hotel we had booked. Hotel stares straight over the harbour. Rooms are a very good standard with amazing views; quite different with both a balcony and a conservatory.
Welcome was excellent with a good description of the area and getting around. High quality breakfast. There is a lovely lounge area to rest and read. Another nice touch is the honesty bar for the late night beer and water.
I would happily stay again and would recommend both Lynmouth and Shelley's to any one; well worth the trip.

I have never written a hotel review before but we would throughly recommend Shelleys Hotel. It is immaculately kept and the rooms are tastefully furnished. Breakfast is excellent and the hotel has made me realise that there is excellent accommodation tobe found in England for a very reasonable price.

We have just returned from a most enjoyable break in Lynmouth and have never written a review before. We found Shelley's on their web site and naturally read TripAdvisor for fellow travellors opinions. We noted the one bad review but rejected it in view of all the other excellent ones. We are glad we did as this is the best small hotel we have stayed in . The location could not have been better, there was no transport cafe opposite, just a charming tea rooms, and yes, there were day trippers arriving in the car park, but what do you expect in a lovely little place like Lynmouth. As for double decker buses pulling in and out all day, we only saw the thrice daily open top bus to Minehead which we would have used given the time. We consider ourselves a bit on the choosy side when it comes to accomodation and were absolutely delighted with Shelley's. Decor and furnishings were to a high standard and the whole place was spotlessly clean. The owners are a hard working couple who take a genuine interest in their guests and nothing seems too much trouble for them. A highly recommended establishment.

I take issue with LisaChilltlehampton in a very recent contribution to Trip Advisor and the disparaging remarks about Shelley’s. So you didn’t like the siting of the building! Surely attitude of host, quality of food (albeit it breakfast), service, comfort, access, etc, matter, and is what Trip Advisor is about. My wife and I spent one night in Shelley’s (2 July 2009) and were 100% happy with all those. The room we were in (no.4) did indeed overlook a car park but we regarded this positively because it allowed us to park across the road. Opposite our window was a tearoom, a common sight in British seaside towns. And despite having both windows open wide all night all we could hear was the sound of the river, which was pleasant. We have had breakfasts in big and small hotels, expensive and cheap, on every continent and what our hosts Richard and Jane presented were first class in quality and quantity. Our room was spotless and the bed so comfortable, with a massive duvet, that we didn’t budge from the moment we fell asleep. The bath filled in about 2 minutes with piping hot water. We tried our best to enjoy the lovely little town so didn’t spend a great deal of time in our room so can’t really comment on the smell of diesel but, in all honesty, the car park was mostly empty and we didn’t see one coach, though there were parking bays for coaches. We only used one restaurant for dinner, Le Bistro, across the road from Shelley’s and had a cracking meal of smoked mackerel pate, braised lamb and vegetable bake, all local produce. When we visit Lynmouth we hope to find a room in Shelley’s and would recommend this hotel.

Second hotel in Lynmouth in two days and third top three rated B & B 's on Trip Advisor including Cracowdays in Krakow makes you feel like Judith Chalmers!

Shelleys, voted No1 on Tripadvisor and rightly so having probed the No2 and sampled the delight of both over two days, so whats the difference:

Pro's

Shelleys transports you back to the days when service was service and everyone did care what people thought with regard to what was on offer, rooms are delightful (Cleanliness only rated 4/5 as my wife moaned about some dust around the Freeview box i the TV cupboard!:(), the room was actually spotless, beautifully decorated, the conservertary was just perfect for watching the rain thrash down whilst enjoying afternoon tea and a newspaper.

Breakfast was excellently presented and equally enjoyable to eat, if you had to be really picky, maybe powdered milk in the rooms doesn't quite fit the surroundings?

The entire hotel is period and spotless, this is your choice for Lynmouth if available and it beats the competition on price also, 40% cheaper than the competition in Lynmouth.

Con's
No car park at Shellyes, no problem in June could be an issue high season even though a special 24hr charge is agreed at £3 on the local pay and displays.

Powdered milk!!!

As per a previous review, maybe the Shelleys thing is a wee bit over the top, between our room and Breakfast there were nine photos relating to Shelly!

Lymouth and Lynton are two of the most beautiful unspoilt towns in North Devon, this is the one if your looking for a perfect stay in beautiful peaceful surroundings.

I am usually someone who does not sleep well the first night away from home... so this must be a first! Slept like a log both nights! Great hospitality, good food, fantastic situation, close to a large choice of local restaurants for evening meals and a very clean and comfortable room. I had no problem with the shower, but the other reviewer may have had a point about the size of the drawers! But hey, not that bothered! A good place to stop for a short break.
