Description: Welcome to Al-Farid Mezz Bar & RestaurantUmar ibn ‘Al-Farid’ was an Arab poet, his poetry is entirely suffic ,and he was esteemed mystic poet of the Arabs. Our head chef has created a thoughtful menu that delights the taste buds. A firm favourite is the mezze, an array of small succulent dishes. The mezze comprised both cold and hot dishes and offers a wealth of colour flavour, texture and aroma. An attribute of Moroccan food is the fact that is healthy as well as tasty and filling.A choice of traditional Moroccan dessert is an offer to complements the meal, expect Baklava a sweet pastry, and Mhallableyh, rice pudding with rose water. Also the drink menu is Moroccan national drink, Arak, which has an aniseed base, and a variety of fruit juices. To finish your meal you cannot miss out on one of our Moroccan coffee, flavoured wit natural cardamom, cinnamon or rose water. No bona fide Moroccan meal complete without smoking an authentic hooka pipe. Each day the water pipes are packed with fresh flavoured tobaccos, choose between apples, strawberry, cherry, rose, grape or fruit cocktail.

If you are looking for a good restaurant in the heart of Exeter that offers something different, good food supported by knowledgeable staff then this is the place to be!

In an age when standardisation is becoming the norm, along with mediocre service Al Farid really offers a welcome change. from the moment you walk in you are welcomed into a different but positive experience. Do not be put off if you have never been before, the staff are very welcoming and happy to explain the menu to you. We 'sat" on the cushions, in true Moroccain style, which just enhanced the evening, though ladies might prefer to wear trousers to save any "wardrobe malfunction"!

The food was excellent, pipping hot, very authentic and quite honestly you could have been in Morroco! I would agree with a previous reviewer about trying the teas at the end of the meal. The staff were really friendly and we had a nice chat with them before we left; it was a pleasure to see the passion they had for what they were doing.

This in clearly a restaurant that we will be returning too.

Lived in Exeter for a while but never been into this place until last night. Wished we had gone in sooner and we have been missing out on this little gem tucked away in the corner near the cathedral.

As we approached the door, one of the staff opened it for us and welcomed us in. We sat upstairs in the room with tables and chairs for our food. During the evening a belly dancer came in and did a short show which was good. The atmosphere inside was great, dimly lit with middle Eastern touches here and there. The staff were excellent and we went for the 6 mezes and bottle of house white for £40.

The food was excellent and once finished we went downstairs to the chillout lounge and sat on the cushions on the floor with others and tried the rose tea. Make sure you try the rose tea , it is divine!

The staff at the end of the night as we were leaving opened the door again for us and thanked us for coming.

We will definitely be back, and will definitely recommend to others!

I would not quibble about the quality of the food which is very good. However a couple of issues took the gloss off our special anniversary evening. Firstly, we specifically selected a bottle of Chilean Merlot from the wine list to accompany our meal but this was substituted with an Italian Merlot and poured suddenly into our glasses without giving us the chance to identify that this was not our preferred choice... some excuses about a change of wine supplier were later proffered for the switch.
Lastly, on being presented with a bill for £95 (when we had budgeted on £55-£60) we found that numerous mezze dishes and teas had been included which we had not ordered or consumed. Ok we protested and they submitted a correct bill but by then our trust in Al Farid had been sorely tested.

I was celebrating my birthday and wanted something a little different. The restaurant is charming and the food was lovely. I had the duck fessejan and my husband had the chicken tagine. After having a taste of mine, my husband said he wished he had ordered that instead. We both liked it so much we asked the waitress about pomegranate molasses and ended up buying a bottle from there! We have since made our own fessejan with chicken and really enjoyed it. We had panacotta for pudding and it was scrumptious. It was a lovely evening and I am glad I spent my birthday there
