“Pub Food At Restaurant Prices”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2013

Recently moved nearby and tried the new local. Food was expensively priced so expected something better than pub food, ordered the scallops and for £15 received 6 small scallops and a small basket of chips. Two meals and two drinks cost over £40 and the food was small portioned and nothing special, will try the nearby Ship and report back soon! Great views here but I would save the money and sit on the harbour wall for free.

“Overpriced, poor food”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2013

We now live locally and took friends for a meal on Friday's ‘fish & chips’ night. The muscles (starter) were good but marred by being very gritty (they need de-bearding and washing properly). One of our party found the skate fine; another was somewhat disappointed by the John Dory. The fish and chips was full of black skin (and bone), and served with a little wilted lettuce on the side - partly because the hot chips were on top of it! We did mention that mushy peas would have been a better alternative, but apparently, chef thinks mushy peas are too down market for this establishment. Odd that two Michelin star chef, Tom Kerridge (at The Hand & Flowers in Bucks) serves them with fish and chips. The Jack in the Green near Exeter serves them. The excellent RockFish restaurant in Dartmouth serves them - they're even good enough for Rick Stein down in Padstow!
The Anchor is a great pub, in a great location, but the food lets it down - it just doesn't seem professionally prepared. This was not our first visit. Not planning to return, but given its prime position on the tourist route I don't suppose the owners will be too bothered about that.

“Excellent Fish”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2013

Really nice pub with plenty of character, good food and excellent service. The prices reflect the quality of the food and I feel are reasonable for what you get. Small car park but appears to be on street parking.

I had the stilton mushroom starter at £6.95 and it was delicious. The cod loin wrapped in bacon followed at £14.95 including vegetables. Very nice and large cod loin cooked very well. The service in the bar was not particularly friendly but the service in the restaurant was excellent.

I am planning to return to try the mussels.

All in all a very pleasant experience.

“Reason to come back to Devon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2013

Really couldn't fault this pub. Lovely atmosphere in the wheelhouse with lots of memorabilia on walls. This end has far more atmosphere than the restaurant and worth booking and certainly book a table on a Saturday evening. 5 real ales available of excellent quality. The waitress was excellent. The sharing platter of salmon, crab, prawns, cheese, sun dried tomatoes, olives and bread was enormous and amazing value as a starter. The menu is for those who love fish but there is more than sufficient for meat eaters etc. The large whole plaice, swordfish steak with good sized portions and fresh vegetables were excellent. The trawler mans gumbo was full of shellfish, white fish and a hot sauce. I note some comments about price in other reviews but this of course depends what you compare it with. we thought the portion size were large and excellent value. Overall we had a great evening and a pleasure to come back to Devon.
