“Unbearably hot and indifferent food”
Reviewed June 7, 2013

I like the intimacy of the theatre but it was so hot that I couldn't bear to stay for the second half. Pre-show meal in Spires Cafe Bar was not very good. The food is overpriced and not of a high standard. Drinks have to be ordered separately which isn't convenient. I would NOT recommend this place for eating.

Dear lasajp,

We're sorry you had an uncomfortable visit to Exeter Northcott Theatre recently. The theatre building is almost 50 years old and unfortunately is not equipped with air conditioning, which can make visiting our theatre in the summer months uncomfortable. This is a matter of great regret to us, but we just don't have the money available to install a suitable system.

We're also sorry to hear that you were disatisfied with your pre-show meal, and will highlight your review with our catering partners Spires - this is surprising news for us we normally receive much praise for their food offering. On the matter of separate payments for drinks, this is because the licence to sell alcohol is held solely by Exeter Northcott Theatre, and not Spires Catering, who are a partner business.

Kind regards,
Media Officer

“A long walk to the sauna”
Reviewed May 3, 2013

Inadequate parking anywhere near the theatre so expect a long walk - uphill too. If you're over 5ft 10 then expect to be uncomfortable too as I think the seats are a job lot of cast offs from Ryanair. The worse thing though is the lack of any air conditioning, actually the lack of any kind of cooling. With a full house the place was like a sauna - really unbearable and spoilt what was a pretty good amateur performance. We (and lots of other people) made a beeline for the outside in the interval just to try and cool off. Won't be repeating the experience.

“Little atmosphere but plays can be pretty good”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

The Northcott has no atmosphere considering it is the biggest performing venue in Exeter. However, they are starting to programme some interesting stuff. Just shows that breaking free from your funder can have a positive effect. You may actually see something you want to see here now instead of arty stuff with 3 people in the audience.

“I have to say i found the very good and since the cafe started the table booking service it has visibly improved.”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

I have always enjoyed the food although having more tables would be a good idea, Unfortunately the cafe bar does not appear to be big enough to cope with the demand

“Good production but terrible cafe”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

Let's start with the cafe. You have to pay cash or cheque and pay before your meal. Perhaps this is because it took them 20 mins to provide a dish of olives and 35 mins for two main dishes. The food itself wasn't too bad although they don't put any dressing on their salads and the dishes themseves are very small. Not recommended. The stage production we saw was excellent and the seats comfortable.
