Generally a very nice hotel. Clean rooms but rather small and stuffy especially with trying to fit in all the amenities commensurate with a five star hotel. Air con did not work and unfortunately staff didn't know how to fix it. We were however offered a room move but at 10pm at night and a great deal of luggage to repack, this was not a favourable option.
We had dinner in the Restaurant which was amazing and breakfast equally delicious. Food and staff excellent! Well worth a visit.

This is an interesting hotel close to the city centre. I stay here regularly on business and have also visited with friends. It is the old city eye hospital and retains some interesting features.
Service is very good as is the food. Relaxed atmosphere with helpful staff.
Limited car parking is a bit of a problem but the advantages far outweigh any disadvantages

I have stayed in many of the major hotels in and local to Exeter and would say that this is the cream of them. Unfortunately the restaurant service at both breakfast and Dinner is a little sour.
The food is passable without too much choice and without being over expensive. It is the service that lets it down. There are plenty of young baseball boot wearing staff but attention to customers seems to be lacking. Twice at breakfast I was ignored and was forced to ask for service.
My major complaint has to be that they have no English beer only foreign bottled posers larger. Gimme a pint of Otter any day!
Complaints now out of the way I have to report that the rest of the Hotel and service were fantastic.
I was upgraded to a superior room where drinks from the mini bar were free and I was issued with an Ipad to use during my stay. I have never had that before. I do not know if this service applies to all guests. There was a nice wide TV with some sky channels available allowing me to watch champions league. This was handy as the WiFi was too weak to stream Sky.
The location is also handy being less than 10 minutes’ walk from both the Cathedral in the town centre and the Quayside
When they reduce the prices or offer value deals will easily be persuaded to return.

We had an amazing time, staff were great, very helpful and efficient. The room was fantastic, especially the bathroom! Breakfast was delicious, we didn't have chance to use the pool, but I've been back since for a day visit - I recommend the lunch package by the way, great value! We'll be back-maybe for our first anniversary hint hint! :)

Great stay over the weekend at this hotel. The hotel looks fantastic, keeping its old fashioned orginal features, yet inside being trendy, modern and eye catching. The room was modern with a studio apartment like feel to it. The bath was to be desired. A large open room with the bath centre stage. The room came with a mini fridge restocked daily and was complimetry. A fantastic day adding to a special night. Overall a great stay and recommended to all.

We arrived on 21st September for 2 nights as we were attending a wedding which was being held at Powderham castle the next day. The reception desk was interesting as I just saw a laptop open on a modern sphere type object and thought this isn't it is it?? but it was. However the evening desk manger couldn't have been more helpful and explained the concept of the Hotel he was very welcoming and made us feel at home. He gave us an iPad which had all the hotel info on which was brilliant and very forward thinking combining modern tech and the lovely look of this old listed building.
Our room was downstairs and was very roomy and contemporary wasn't so keen on the flooring but the.rest was good. We we're also informed that the mini bar was free??? Although not filled to the brim was lovely to not have to worry about taking a drink and they supplied a bar of chocolate too.... Bar area has a lounge feel and the breakfast room is bright and cheery staff are very helpful and wonderful menu to pick from! I tried the North African eggs and loved it so different from the usual English breakfast!! Would definitely stay here again but not for a spa treatment as a little spartan and lacks atmosphere.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a slightly bigger room... Other wedding party said rooms were small
