What a lovely relaxed experience it is to have lunch at the Magdalen Chapter ! We decided to have a break on our way down to devon, and wanted also to do a little shopping in Exeter, and we really enjoyed the whole experience. Excellent value two (£12.95)or three (£15.95) course special menu, and I had a truly scrumtious beetroot gavadlax starter, and it was difficult to choose from the mouth watering selection, no wonder the chef has recently been voted `Chef of the Year` he absolutely deserves the title ! Thoroughly recommend, and SO worth the few minutes off the motorway.

Old building with modern interior. Liked the log fires. Bedroom heating not on on a cold January weekend and had to get someone to sort it out but then OK.
Disappointed to find a very pleasant lounge with fire was booked. Would have liked the opportunity to book this if had known about it as we were a family gathering.
Dinner was really amazing. Would return just for the food.
Service at breakfast very poor, one of our party asked for herbal tea as soon as we sat down and had to remind staff several times for it.
A jacuzzi and pool would be nice - not really a spa without this.

Stayed 1 night and ate in. Live near Exeter anyway so we know this place fairly well as the best at what it does, i.e. a modern stylish high quality venue. Food at dinner and breakfast both excellent and service faultless as well. Really like the multipurpose nature of the place as well with large lounge areas, outside areas, fantastic pool, dining, library, lots of choice and all well done. Hotel called before to check whether we wanted to book for dinner as it would have been full which was good. Check on whether room size is enough to cater for a child bed as well as some websites are not in line with the hotels policy. Definitely recommend.

It was such a shame to see the economic crisis take the previous incarnation of this hotel away from travellers to Exeter. Though initially sceptical I've been really impressed with the new hotel. The bar is small but chic, a good place for a pre night out drink. My only gripe is the massively insufficient car parking provision although the staff allow you to park in unmarked bays when all is full.

This was a stay of contrasts. There is clearly huge potential in this hotel- fantastic building in a great location. But the execution lets it down. Little touches like the iPad for use in your room are nice, but don't contribute to your overall enjoyment beyond the first 5 minutes. The free mini-bar really isn't that big a deal- one bottle of beer and half a bottle of wine aren't much to get excited about. The staff, though friendly, seem to have taken their scruffy uniform to heart- they just don't seem all that bothered to actually provide anything like good service. This isn't too much of a problem, until you eat in the restaurant. Serious work needs to be done on this aspect of the hotel. Staff seem to prefer to stand around chatting, rather than actually doing any work. Messy tables were left uncleared for too long, they gossiped about other members of staff within earshot of guests, and generally looked uninterested. The food was disappointing; I was surprised to be served cold eggs benedict.
All in all, there are some nice touches, but you don't feel that staff are being asked to work to a particularly high standard- the corridors, for example, were very messy and looked like they hasn't been vacuumed for weeks. On the whole, hugely disappointing, not least given how expensive the place is. We booked a feature room, which is at the more expensive end of the hotel's rooms. I was quite surprised by how small the room turned out to be. For the same money, I would suggest staying in the Abode on Cathedral Square- far better service, and nicer rooms.

Myself & partner were here for a Xmas present of a Spa Day. it was very nice and as a bloke i truelly enjoyed it. The welcome as unconventional for a hotel as was there unbiform but very friendly. we were greated with Tea and cake. coffee was great and the Cake of the day (carrot) was the best i've ever had!
We then went through to pool area which was perfect for me and partner & even though minus 3 outside the pool was clean and warm & we really liked the heater! Then we went through (in robes) to have lunch. A little apprehensive at first being a bloke but was put at ease by the lovelly restaurant host. The food was great, fresh bread and a Tuna Salad starter with capers was 10/10. We had a great wine with (although very exspensive) but worth the taste combo. Then traditional liver & oniuons. Then off for a great massage and swim. Then in the lounge area for a couple fantastic cocktails. It was a great gift and a great thought for 2 busy parents to relax and be looked after. Thoroughly reccommend!

Visited this morning for afternoon tea. Found all free table still uncleared so spent the first 5 minutes cleaning our own table as no staff were bothered to clean it for anyone. The cocktail menu seemed fairly priced and we opted for 2 of the Hendricks Martinis at £6 each. What we were presented with was half a martini glass of watery cocktail and 3 large slices of cucumber. When removing the cucumber the liquid left was sub standard and very much a Bad deal price wise. Hotel look lovely but why are the staff in converse?? Very strange!!!

Doubt I'd be visiting again for a drink or to stay!!
