“Fursdon Cottage on the Fursdon Estate is very restoring and inspiring place to stay”
Reviewed March 10, 2014

We stayed for a weekend in Fursdon Cottage on the Fursdon estate. It is so beautiful: the cottage itself has been recently refurbished and every room is a joy to be in, especially the large living room with woodburning stove and light streaming in from windows on all sides. The cottage is high up and you can see for miles around and it feels like you are in the sky. We loved watching the clouds and the changing landscape at different times of day. It is very restful and inspiring.
The cottage is perfectly equipped. The kitchen is excellent and we loved all the bedrooms which are light and warm, with comfortable beds and beautiful linen.

We stayed with our 2 children who are 2 and 5 and they loved all the space inside and out. The cottage garden is perfect for exploring and very pretty. They also loved walking through the grounds to look at the swathes of snow drops, horses and chickens and swinging on the swing that flies above the fields!

There are lots of wonderful walks in surrounding landscape and it was so lovely to know we were returning to such a haven after!

This is the perfect place to stay to feel really blessed and relaxed. Catriona and her family have generously created a really special place to have a holiday and we would love to stay again...LOTS!

It is so rewarding for us to read that you have found staying at Fursdon Cottage 'restful and inspiring' - that is exactly what I'd hoped to achieve when the cottage was renovated! The colours were chosen to be peaceful and calm so that even if you are staying for a weekend it is a restorative experience. Good quality beds and linen help too - so it was cheering to hear that you appreciated that as well.
You've obviously enjoyed the amazing views from this hill top - and I love your comment about 'the swing that flies above the fields'!
Thank you for your amazing review.

We enjoyed a lovely break in this fantastic location. We were lucky that the sun shone enabling us to enjoy the views and the peace and quiet whilst walking around the estate. The garden wing was spacious, very comfortable, clean and well equiped with a fabulous log burner.

I'm so pleased that you have enjoyed your short break in the Garden Wing at Fursdon. The new woodburner in the sitting room is proving to be popular! Thank you for your review.

Stayed in the Garden Wing.Thoughtfully equipped for self catering, crisp white sheets, lovely fluffy towels, spotlessly clean. Big Georgian windows with real shutters, log fire, lots of books and games. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. We spent the weekend walking the beautiful gardens and grounds, blackberrying in the lanes and sitting in the secluded garden outside the Garden Wing reading and watching the butterflies in the lavender and stasis flowers. Tiverton has a shopping centre with M&S food hall and Saturday market. Killerton NT property is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Garden Wing best access to gardens, Park Wing has best views and big living room. The cottage has...

Very good apartment part of large manor house. Comfortable accommodation. Did not have own washing machine. Quite remote a long way to the nearest shop so surprising no basic foods are provided especially when considering the cost. Good local pubs ok if used to narrow country lanes.

Whilst we appreciate the review, we think 'rural' is a fairer description than 'remote'. There are numerous supermarkets within 15 minutes' drive, a farm shop within 5 minutes and the vibrant city of Exeter is only 20-25 minutes away. We also like to think that our secluded home lends itself to a very peaceful holiday!

We stayed in the Garden Wing of Fursdon House. We had our 10-month old daughter with us. It was fabulous! We had direct access to the garden and due to the nice weather we could take full advantage of it. Our daughter could crawl around the spacious apartment and garden without braking anything! From the estate there is easy access to Exeter, Dartmoor, Exmoor and a lot more beautiful and interesting places, but there are also many beautiful spots around the estate waiting to be enjoyed. Be sure to take a tour of Fursdon House while you are there. It is amazing! Catriona, the owner, is very friendly and around when needed. We absolutely recommend it!

Room Tip: The Garden Wing has direct access to the garden.

We have stayed at Fursdon several times over the years. The beauty of the place is compelling. Last November we took the newly refurbished Fursdon Cottage, and were very pleased we did. Fortunately, the weather was chilly. So we had an excuse to light the woodburning stove in the sitting room. Wholly unnecessary because the house was cosily warmed by the central heating, but nice to sit watching the flames. Next door in a snug is the TV for watching instead. And there is wireless broadband throughout.
We prefer to cook for ourselves, though there are pub restaurants nearby in Thorverton and Bickleigh. The kitchen area was fine, and fully equipped. Food from Morrison’s and Tesco a short drive away in Tiverton.
There is a farm lane abutting the house which did not in any way intrude on the absolute tranquillity unless one objects to the very occasional horse, and the post van, and maybe a tractor. Unreservedly recommended for tranquillity and beauty.

We have stayed several times in this old family home in the Park Wing. The apartment is very spacious and has everything you could wish for. The bed is nice and firm and big, the kitchen is well equipped and the open fire is great. The owner is friendly and welcoming and on hand if you need something. The only thing that could be better are the lounge chairs, these are a bit dated and not very supportive.
