Owner description: Dating from 14th century, these medieval passages under Exeter High Street are a unique ancient monument: no similar system of passages can be explored by the public elsewhere in Britain. The Passages have long exercised a fascination over local people, with stories of wars and sieges, plague and pestilence! Their purpose was simple: to bring clean drinking water from natural springs in fields lying outside the walled city, through lead pipes into the heart of the city. The pipes sometimes sprang leaks and repairs to buried pipes could only be carried out by digging them up as we do today. To avoid this disruption the passages were vaulted and it is down some of these vaulted passageways that visitors are guided. The Passages are dark and narrow with a fascinating history. Visitors can experience interactive and educational exhibits in the Underground Passages Heritage Centre and watch a short video presentation before their guided tour.

Great fun and informative tour. Amazing hearing the traffic above us as we walked through the tunnels. And the place looks like a shop front!

“Over-rated attraction”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

I visited just one time, on a 'special' Blitz Visit. This attraction is probably fun for small children. However, the "Blitz" feature had nothing special about it other than a recording of an air raid siren as we entered the first passage. The Guide's information was interesting. The only other really interesting part of the visit was the multiple display boards on the approach to the entrance, giving details about daily life in the War and during the Blitz.

“A very un(der)usual experience”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

An interesting glimpse into old Exeter - but not for the claustophobic! Walk along the (sometimes very) narrow passages which extend under the high street - and find out why they're there.

“Fascinating!”

Really interesting tour and not too expensive. Would not recommend if claustrophobic. Very well lit along the passages and lasts about 30-40 mins.
